CNN trolling for bad news |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-05-05 05:47 PM by Chimpys_Last_Stand
....maybe it's something that's been going on forever and I've only recently become aware of it....but it seems to me that more and more CNN is scouring the news horizon for bad news in real time. Especially during Kyra Phillips afternoon shift. It's like the producer has got an itchy "Just In" finger....pulling the trigger on stories of overturned tanker trucks, chemical factory fires, armed standoffs and the like. Generally they're bringing up stories on screen which really are only of local interest, serious no doubt to the locals affected, but otherwise not worthy of this kind of national exposure. A little more reasonable perhaps today when it was the bomb threat or whatever on board that Southwest Airlines jet which landed in Houston. Still, it was like poor little Kyra was crestfallen when it became clear the situation at the airport with the disembarking passengers was stable. I was almost waiting for her to say "Oh come on.....isn't there at least some volatility to this situation, some element of pure terror or danger....something, anything....throw me a bone here!!"

is to keep us afraid, very very afraid. to separate us from one another by projecting this fear. before the "war on terror" we were assaulted with criminal black men in the headlines.

5. Is this a function of the 24-hour news cycle? |

They're all the same--CNN, Fox, MSNBC. Natalee Holloway shouldn't be a national story. Neither should the runaway bride. And certainly not a turned over tanker truck.
They've created the market for "non-news news," though, and they have sponsors paying them to show that crap. And those sponsors don't care if we love it or hate it--or gripe about it on DU, for that matter.
We have stop watching it. And we have to stop watching in droves, if we want to influence their decision to keep showing it.

important. Victim should be white, goodlooking, and female, so white, good looking, and female newsreaders can devote whole shows to the subject. Stuff like Iraq body counts, traitorous actions by this administration, destroying the environment, corporate war profiteering, and stealing elections are not good candidates for reporting. Too many people who might actually be affected by these stories might actually tune in and learn something.
