Rename a street in Washington for the Old Doddler, Reagan ?
They are asking for trouble. If they put up those signs in D.C. , I predict each and every one will be vandalized. Why do they continue to deify this old fool? What did he ever do for the average person.? Hey, he busted a union! He stood up for the corporations! He wanted to make tomato ketchup a vegetable. What one thing did do to help the lives of average Americans?

<snip>
D.C. residents and elected leaders reacted with outrage today upon learning that a Texas congressman has proposed renaming one of the city's main thoroughfares to honor former president Ronald Reagan.

"It's been a long time since I've heard of a plan that made so little sense," Mayor Anthony A. Williams said in response to Rep. Henry Bonilla's bill to rename 16th Street in Northwest Washington as "Ronald Reagan Boulevard."

The mayor said the name change, proposed July 28 as Congress prepared to begin its summer recess, would likely cost D.C. taxpayers more than $1 million for such things as new signs and address changes. No funding to make those changes is included in the legislation.

Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District's non-voting elected delegate to the House of Representatives, said she has attempted to call Bonilla to discuss his proposal and will insist that "home rule be respected on the streets where our residents live and pay taxes." She said she does not expect the bill to emerge from the House Committee on Government Reform, to which it was referred for consideration.

1. The original design of DC was perfect.
Numbers and letters. Before the grid was all fucked up, I'd bet it was impossible to get lost in DC.

I'd be opposed to them renaming this street anything, but some Texan trying to rename a street in dark blue DC is outrageous.

2. You want to see a whole city take to the streets?
I almost hope they try this crap, so we can run them out of town.

Till he's been canonized into sainthood and every street, school, and bar & grill bears His Holy Name. I live here in the burbs & It still infuriates me that National Airport became R.R. National Airport & you have to be reminded of him everytime you have to go there. God I hate this shit!

6. It will always be Washington National Airport.
Take note of the weathercasters, in particular who call it that. Almost everyone bought in after St. Ronnie's death spectacle, but it's back to normal now.

7. That was my immediate thought ...
I fly in and out of "National," ... think of it only as Washington National. The renaming was a slap in the face to working women and men.

Now "they" want to rename streets in his honor ...

9. I used to live on 16th St. near Rock Creek Park...I used to catch
the S2 bus right in front of the White House. I cannot tell you how many times we had to wait for a bus while Reagan's freakin' motorcade went by.

They can re-name it after Reagan, and the next time I am in DC I will make sure to take a leak on it.
