What would you do if we were invaded?
Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 10:28 AM by anarchy1999
This question was posed on another thread.

courtesy "democrank"
I ask this of every single pro-war person I come into contact with.... If a foreign government invaded America, killed and maimed our citizens, bombed our cities, took down our statues, changed our currency, took over our oilfields, set curfews and roadblocks, raided our homes, set up a torture center, made decisions about who would get work and who wouldn`t, witheld electricity and water, and set up a puppet government, would we be "terrorists" if we fought back?

What would you DO?

I'm so confused. Damn. I do know though what I'd be and how I'd feel if I lived in Iraq. I'd be pissed off.

so when the US. wipes out entire families I believe they are also adding extra "insurgents" to help the fight against our troops.

which is what i think most people would do. it's human nature to fight back when attacked.

what is NOT human nature is to attack when unprovoked. that's just plain evil.

24. Having heard the experiences of people who lived through WWII
in Europe and Japan, trust me, you do NOT want a "good, honest military invasion."

Huddling in the rubble, winter and summer, with no electricity, no running water, and no functioning plumbing, and living on two chunks of bread or one bowl of rice per day is NOT fun.

Edited on Sat Aug-06-05 10:35 AM by ThomWV
One might give plausable argument to the proposition that we are in the process of being invaded by Mexico right now - sans the bombs and maiming of our citizens - but other than that just what country do you think might invade our shores? Oh, and what country do you think could send a single LST up to a sunny beach without its home country being nuked into a very nasty black glass?

Good point, ThomWV. Given that we are the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the world, one might ask why we have not pushed back at Mexico or helped them to become a nation that does not make its inhabitants want to leave to find a better life north.

25. Pot Calling Kettle
Killing civilians is, sadly, a standard practice in modern war. Some do it more than others. The main killer of civilians in Iraq has been Washington, both via the sanctions & via the war. The Bush junta created terrorism in Iraq & they are Osama's best recruiter.

34. It would honestly depend on how much I liked the system...
...I was living under. If I had no rights in America as it was, I might welcome a political change brought in from the outside. If the political change was even less welcome than the system I was living under, I'd fight the invaders and try to help establish something home-based.

As America is today, and because I enjoy my freedoms here, I would fight any country looking to change it with force.

38. Bush and company don't understand human nature...
... it's basic human nature to resist foreign aggression.
If there was Iraqi soldiers coming down my street in an armored vehicle or half-track or something, I'd shoot at them, no matter how well intentioned they claimed to be. The longer they stayed in my country, the more likely I would be to shoot at them. That's human nature.

And that's the problem, as I see it, with the folks who advocated for this war, as you did: they didn't understand human nature. They thought they could radically remake the politics of another nation in their own image. They thought that the Iraqis would all welcome us with open arms like the Italians did after their capitulation. That's Pollyanna wishful thinking. Wars are not won by Pollyanna wishful thinking.

So long as the population wants the foreigners out more than they want to stay, all occupations are doomed to fail. Not only do those boys in Washington misunderstand basic human nature, they don't understand history. They keep spouting off about "light at the end of the tunnel" and "Iraquification." They keep saying things like "It takes time to train an army and a police," when they was the ones what disbanded the army and the police in the first place. Besides, the insurgents have had no longer to train than the Iraqis we are training, and they seem to be doing just fine--heck, they just keep getting better, and it seems all the time I hear our own generals praising them for being so "adaptive," all the while claiming that they will win the hearts and minds of the Iraqis, ignoring that basic point about human nature I made earlier.

So, again, we have had something like 1,800 deaths, all because the Bushies don't understand basic facts about man (perhaps because they are not men, but rather some unspeakable race of subterranean troglodytes in disguise). Since they presumably wouldn't have advocated so strongly for a war they knew we couldn't win, and they're too smart to have been wrong about that, what is their plan now for us to win the hearts and mines-sorry, I mean minds-of the Iraqis? We need to press them on this.
