What happen to Fitzgerald when his term is up? |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 08:16 AM by Skinner
Sorry didn't have a link so posted the whole thing.
Feisty U.S. attorney's job safe Friday, July 29, 2005 CHICAGO SUN-TIMES BY LYNN SWEET Sun-Times Washington Bureau Chief
WASHINGTON -- It's his call.
Though his term is up this fall, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, the aggressive prosecutor who is investigating Mayor Daley's City Hall, possible illegal White House leaks and who has a former Illinois governor awaiting a corruption trial, is in no danger of losing his job.
Fitzgerald's original four-year term expires in a few months, and former Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R-Ill.), who engineered his appointment (they are not related), is raising a concern the Chicago-based career prosecutor may be pressured out.
The former senator said in a WGN-TV interview Wednesday he feared for Patrick Fitzgerald's future because of his pursuit of official corruption. Peter Fitzgerald did not offer specifics and was vacationing Thursday and could not be reached.
House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was asked about Peter Fitzgerald's concerns Thursday . "I know there been innuendos about my getting pressures. I can tell you nobody has talked to me or called me about this. Anybody. Period,'' Hastert said.

1. Unless Bush appoints someone new, |
|
Fitzgerald keeps his Chicago job. Regardless of what happens there, he stays as Special Prosecutor for Plamegate. The two jobs are not, to my knowledge, related in any way. In fact, if Bush did appoint a new U.S. Attorney in Illinois' Northern District (Chicago) to replace Fitzgerald, that would mean that Fitz would then be able to devote full time to Rove...

9. I would guess that it has most of his attention. |
|
But as the U.S. Attorney for Illinois' Northern District, he still has several high profile investigations and ongoing trials in Chicago. I would assume that most of that is handled by staff, but he still has oversight. Same way with Plamegate in DC. It's not like on the movies or tv, where Fitz goes out personally looking for clues on his own in the middle of the night...

"...Bush would face a storm of protest if he fired a man who is investigating his own administration."
Is that supposed to reassure us? :eyes:

3. Robert Fiske....a History Lesson |
|
Well, the Independent Counsel statue is no longer in existence. Democrats and Republicans in Congress let it expire some years ago, because they both felt they had been burned by it.
Anyway, you may remember that Robert Fiske was the original Independent Counsel in the Whitewater case. But while he was doing his work, the statue was about to expire, and Congress had to renew it.
He released a preliminary report finding no wrong-doing by the Clintons. The Repugs got upset, and 2 Senators had lunch with David Sentelle (from the 3 judge appellette here in DC) and they replaced Robert Fiske with Ken Starr.

6. This is something way back in the recesses of an AZ heat baked mind... |
|
but I remember Starr coming in as special prosecutor in a manner that did not please me. Now will they do the same thing with Fitzgerald, or are they that stupid?

Robert Fiske released his preliminary report, because he knew the Independent Counsel was getting ready to expire, and needed renewal. Now in the past, they just kept the same person on as Independent Counsel, because that person was most familiar with the facts of the case they had been working on.
But Robert Fiske really pissed off his fellow Republicans with his preliminary report exonerating the Clintons. It's as if the Repugs were telling him "You had a chance to bring down a Democratic administration, and you aren't doing it."
So after the Independent Counsel statue was renewed, they just dumped him for Starr.
It will really be interestng to see how it all plays out with Fitzgerald and his boss.

Read another post about this that's on the main page here on GD. They're replacing him with someone who has S&B ties.

4. If they dump Fitzgerald |
|
he hopefully would become a Democrat and run for office on a platform emphasizing the administration's corruption.
