The "improving economy" was talked about this week on NPR and in the NY Times (though the Times had an editorial questioning how better off the economy really is). I think the point is to make Americans think that everything's just fine, and getting better. If you are in trouble, hey, it's your fault, not something that's a national trend. They know that people who have lost their jobs, or are having trouble making ends meet ususally don't talk that much about it, and so don't find out that there are a lot of people in the same boat, and, most importantly, don't organize to do something about it.

for her a a tiny minority of people. So from her comfortable viewpoint, things are great. And that is the reason that many people -- including democrats at the "top" -- are hesitant to oppose Bush. They are making a fortune on other people's misfortune.

18. So true. Also consider the fact that what has fueled economic good |
|
times for the wealthiest is the huge jump in government spending on "defense", the plunder of the Social Security trust fund and the growing national deficit. It is simply unsustainable, and all Bush can think about is how he can further cut taxes for his corporate paymasters and greedy rich campaign contributors.

The people who commentate on shape our public discourse are individuals that don't worry about health insurance costs, have no problem shelling out $30,000 a year for their children's college tuition, don't need social security, never travel public transportation, don't clean their own homes, have vacation homes far away from anything remotely connected to poverty etc etc.
This is a woman who makes tens of thousands of dollars for going to corporate functions and dispensing boilerplate DC conventional wisdom that is irrelevant from the moment it leaves her mouth.
It's a great country if you're Cokie Roberts.

12. Does fact her dad was GOP congressman(NY) mean she's biased? |
|
Or is she biased all on her own?
Or is she just another media mouthpiece for the GOP that complains of the liberal bias of the media.
Or is she just a lazy mediawhore reading from today's script?
So many questions......??????

Hale Boggs - he died in airplane crash in the 1970s.
Roberts began her career as a decent journalist but as the money and fame grew her integrity disappeared.
You actually become less informed when you listen to her.

but this is the third or fourth time I have gotton Cokie confused with her - I hope it is the last.
Thanks

26. 64 was Miller for VP - but no- I suspect I was thinking of Susan Molinari |
|
US Congresswoman Susan Molinari is not upstate (she's Staten Island) but the grandfather/father history and talk show talking head would fit my memory.
I met Susan and her Husband (Paxton) many times in the 90's and I suspect that was the flash that came back at me when I got pissed at Cokie for turning to the right, anti-Clinton, anti-Dem, 100% of the time in the 90's.

10. Because that and the forthcoming troop withdrawal from Iraq... |
|
is the plan to keep the Republicans in power. Democrats need to counter this before it takes hold in the people's consciousness. The economy sucks. It's Keynesianism gone wild. Spend enough money and there will be some economic stimuli. Look at the jobs we have lost and the jobs we have created. Look at the price of gasoline!

as a job is a job.Doesn't matter if it pays $5.15 an hour or $30.00 an hour it's a job.The economy may have produced alot of jobs, but what is the quality of job? Also the economy is creating great wealth, but that wealth is mostly in the hands of the top 2% of the people but the numbers look great.

20. DING DING! You nailed it... |
|
Raw numbers (even IF true) that seem to indicate progress mean NOTHING if those jobs reflect falling wages and fewer benefits. It's a ruse.
I know a lot of people that are just not able to make it in this great economy... yeah, they have jobs...Just for example, three jobs between two people still doesn't cut it for one couple we know. Geez, since when do construction workers need to drive pizza delivery at night?

24. She also said that the disgust over Iraq will cost the GOP dearly in 2006. |
|
Is she a "whore" for that?
The economic data was from polls; whether they're good or bad polls, I don't know.
We have an unfortunate tendency to pull stuff out of context and then condemn someone on it. Just like the GOP.

You seem to be on the defensive. Cokie Roberts is an old pro at twisting poll numbers and figures to further the GOP wacko agenda. Why didn't she say, "The polls tell us that people believe the economy is on the right track, but the reality it's a smokescreen."? She didn't say that because she is part of the smokescreen.

as the RW. I'm sure you had the best of intentions with your original post, but there are always lots of folks who didn't see or hear the appearance referred to who then bandy around a lot of words like "whore". I honestly don't care if you think Cokie Roberts is a whore, but base it on what she actually said, on her entire statement. That's my point.
