Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 08:59 AM by Ripley
Central Alabama.

I remember when it was hovering at $1.99 most of the summer since Memorial Day and I wondered when it would start creeping up again. What's their damned excuse this week? No hurricanes to blame. Oh wait, it's hot.

I love to watch the look on people's faces at the pump who have "W" stickers on their Suburbans or F-150's. Hee hee.

Who are you calling "opportunistic crooks:? You're just observing the free market aspect of capitalism at work- you're free to exploit any market you possibly can for as long as they'll put up with it.That's my Lily Tomlin jaundiced eye perspective speaking, of course.

6. I saw regular at $2.40 yesterday. Mostly at $2.34 though...
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 09:07 AM by Kahuna
I've noticed a trend. They jack it up, then will come down a few cents. The next time they jack it up it will be higher than the last high. I'm convinced it's headed for $3.00. I'm carefully considering what kind of car to purchase next. I like mini vans and am currently paying $50.00 a week for gas for my mini van.

on edit: I live in NE N.J.

11. I agree with your analysis.
So far they have gotten everyone comfortable with the over $2.00/gallon price. So they go up 10 cents for a short time, then back it off a few. It creeps.

I'm betting it will hit $3.00 in a lot of places by Labor Day or Halloween maybe. People will already be used to the $2.50=$2.75 range by then.

19. I agree...
But...are the American people ever going to stand up and say enough is enough...???? or do we, as wimps continue to pay it, and watch the price climb to say $4, or $5 a gallon....??? While our corporate gov't continues to get rich off the spoils???? What? We can't do anything about it? Nothing? We are powerless??? What happens when you can no longer afford to drive to work? Is this a concerted effort to force everyone to go buy a new, less expensive to run, smaller car? Another corporate swindle? You do realize that it's not just us paying these ridiculous prices?? That all our goods and services will charge accordingly??? So we end up getting screwed 50 ways from Sunday...and again...DO NOTHING...SAY NOTHING??? and if that IS the case....get ready to be happy about when it was $3. a gallon...because after all, there IS nothing we can do...Too bad we can't get more than two people to stick together on anything...we COULD shut this country down for a day or so, in protest...unfortunately, it would take millions being willing to actually take action, to accomplish anything worthwhile...soo...I guess, ante up, is going to continue to be the call...while we continue to bitch and pay...

20. It is the sticker shock syndrome..
when u go to a car lot and first start looking for a new car...u look at the prices...and u literally back up...u are shocked and amazed...but in a very short time of looking...u adjust and accept...and the shock reaction is something in the past...something that is a part of the good ole days...when u could buy a car for under $10,000 or whatever. it is the same with the gas prices...we might clammer and complain...and remember fondly the prices of the good ole days, but we adjust and accept...because we have no choice...this is life and this is now..and this is how it is..this is our world..we live in it as we must...and the shock of it is way in the past. will there be a new sticker price reaction of shock? Sure, but it will be when gasoline is not available at any price..or so out of reach to be not available...and then again...the same adjustment will occur...we will ride bikes or walk..we will adjust...and that is our survival instinct working..if we cannot change it...we adjust because we must.

9. Hahahah! You California Suckers!
Only $2.50? I thought yall hit the big 3.00 by now?

Actually it is irrational the way the price varies around the Southeast. This summer I went on a few road trips. It was $2.50 in Asheville, NC and $1.99 in Meridian Mississippi in the same week.

13. When I see it jump at the pump, I always plan on spending more at
the grocery the next week. The price of food is going through the roof around here. My summer CSA organic produce shares just ran out until end of September and the local farmer's market is an hour away. I saw some tomatoes at the grocery for $3.50/lb! What are they....gold inside?

15. Doh!
That's insane! Now I remember why we keep turning down job offers in California! We'd have to make a cool million to afford the gas and tomaotoes, much less a roof over our heads. (No walls of course, just a roof.)

Are they that much at farmer's market or just grocery?

21. It hasn't been under 2.00 in Indiana for eons.
It bounces from 2.18 to 2.48. Right now sitting at 2.38 for regular.

It is not uncommon to pull up to a pump and see that the previous customer spent more than $50 at the pump.

24. $2.49 here in central Ohio
and you only got a 10 cent jump? Hell our gas can jump 30 cents in 10 minutes, and does so daily. No one ever knows what gas prices are at any given hour, they change so rapidly here.

We also have not seen gas below two bucks for quite some time.

34. Hi, Ripley! $2.25.9 here in LA (Lower Arkansas)
About a nickel per gallon jump sometime this past Thursday. My standard comment if anybody mentions gasoline prices these days: "Boy, they'd have crucified Clinton for this. Good thing we got rid of that bastard, huh!"

Talk about getting some puzzled looks...
