Bobos in Paradise by DBrooks of the Weekly Standard, etc |
|
have you heard of this book?? I heard an interview on NPR when it came out ...... the reviews on amazon.com don't contain what I remember from the interview
my recollection: Brooks said Clinton was the archetypal example of the Bobo, partly baby boomers.....baby boomers supposedly all 'want everything now without working for it and the ultimate goal is enjoyment'
at the time, and even more now, I thought W was the archetypal example of this......Clinton came from poverty and worked hard....and we all know how little W has ever worked for anything
another thought at the time: although Brooks claimed to be a member of this culture, he really used the interview (and the book??) to denigrate liberals and their 'destructive cultural influence/

1. total madeup trash....not even factual |
|
horrible, Tom Wolfe wannabe garbage
painfully awful writing
just the title is bad enough
he stole it from a section of Wolfe's Painted Word: the Boho Dance, in which the struggling young avant garde artist tries to segue into the world of money/art collectors, etc......

2. Clinton is the American dream that the republicans worship. |
|
He came from pretty much nothing, literally did pull himself up by his bootstraps and, well, you saw how the republicans reacted. The fact is, republicans only like wealthy people and the older the wealth is, the better.

7. nobody actually read that book...did they? |
|
when I heard about it I thought it was probably garbage and when I paged through it at the thrift shop not long ago, I realized it was garbage without a doubt.
I think it was intended to denigrate liberals, but I'm not sure it did that since the book was kind of a loser. Looks like they didn't need it--they found a far more effective way to damage Clinton.

8. lite weight book by a lite weight mind |
|
evil relatives pestered me to read that tripe. lots of soundbites iliterates might find clever. one good thing it reinforced my arsenal of insults when talking about the ny times most banal scribe. oh yea, and it convinced me to never read anything else by the balding boy wonder.
