Nominate your picks for the 101 Worst Americans.
I've started a project, and I request your assistance.

I'm compiling a website to list the 101 worst Americans currently living; a sort of dynamic counter to Bernard Goldberg's "100 People Who Are Screwing Up America (And Al Franken Is #37)" -- which, in spite of the title, is actually a Who's Who of true American patriots. I'm seeking nominations of people to populate the list with.

There are the obvious choices, of course -- Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, Limbaugh, Murdoch, Coulter, etc. -- but there may be some really terrible Americans out there that I, like most people, don't know of and haven't considered. I'd like to hear suggestions from both of those groups, along with, if you would, a brief word about WHY they are among the 101 worst Americans.

Obviously, the more names I have to choose from, the better and more accurate the list will be.

So, who wants to start?

Brother Paul O'Donnell, a Franciscan friar who serves as the Schindler family spokesman.

This is not the first time he's pulled this kind of crap. He's part of this whole "pro-life"... er... "pro-birth" nut group who is the first to accuse liberal Christians of not being Christians... blah, blah, blah.

Rush Limbaugh, Bill Reilly, Sean Hannity, Reverend Phelps (from "God hates Fags" fame), Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Dr. James Dobson (Focus on the Family), Tony Perkins, (another gay bashing "christian" propaganda machine).

And Sydney "Syd" Kitson, the developer who bought what's left of Florida's pristine, not touched by greedy hands, wilderness and is going to turn it into a development and run all the wildlife out of their homes and drain the natural wetlands and put in fucking huge money making housing development with golf courses, (complete with pesticides and fertilizers that will run into the water sources) and parking lots and Floritan grass and landscaping, (and all the pesticides and fertilizers that will run into the water sources), not to mention what ever I forgot or whatever other evil he has plan); the 91 thousand acre Babcock Ranch!

18. "Reverend" Fred Phelps of the Westboro "Baptist Church"
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 07:28 PM by mcscajun
From Topeka, Kansas.

He is notorious for his intolerance and hatred of Gays, Jews, Muslims, Catholics, Blacks, Asians, Latinos (basically anyone not WASP and 'sufficiently and properly Christian') and fat people. He also runs the web sites "godhatesfags.com" and "godhatesamerica.com", among other hate sites.

He has also become infamous for picketing gay events around the country, most horrendously the funerals of homosexuals and lately, the funerals of soldiers who served in Iraq.

There's a lot more...do any google or wiki search and you'll find rafts of stuff on this bastard.

142. My "favorite" position of his...if such a word can be used in this context
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 02:23 PM by mcscajun
is his bigotry against fat people...of which I am one.

From wikipedia.org: (emphasis mine)

Phelps insists that those who are obese are so because they are being punished by God. A Topeka resident identified as "Berger" was involved in a street fight with WBC members in 1993, and, has since gained weight, prompting Phelps to proclaim that Berger gained weight and developed heart problems because he "shed the innocent blood of God's beloved". However, several of Phelps' children and in-laws suffer far greater obesity than that witnessed in Berger (Jon Phelps and Deborah Kay Hockenbarger are both in excess of 270 lb or 120 kg), and Phelps himself nearly died at the weight of 300 lb (135 kg) after a drug overdose.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Racial_and_Political_Stances_of_Westboro_Baptist_Church#Anti-Obesity_Stance

So, I'd have to guess the Phelps' are also being punished by God? Hmmm... :sarcasm:

98. Jesse Helms belongs in that "early" bunch...
not only for all his rightwing assaults on basic freedoms, but how about his devastating tenure on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee?

http://www.usvetdsp.com/story45.htm

"It is about money, deceit and betrayal, all of which were epitomized in March 1996, when Helms cozily welcomed Vietnam's charge d'affaires, Le Van Bang, to North Carolina. With Le Bang posed at his side, Helms was photographed telling the press that communist Vietnam is a welcome "economic partner" for North Carolina. The Helms red carpet welcome included a visit to the high-tech Research Triangle Park and a tobacco plant, followed by dinner at the governor's mansion and a visit to Helms' coveted nonprofit Jesse Helms Center at Wingate University near Charlotte, N.C.

When reporters pressed Helms about whether North Carolina might be exporting more jobs than products, he impatiently answered "The more we export, the more people we can employ. We live in this world. We have to participate in the affairs of the world." ...

This uncharacteristic behavior of Helms is a transformation baptized in the ink of contracts which sealed a joint business venture in Vietnam between Helms' most powerful backer and contributor, R.J. Reynolds International, Inc. (RJR) and the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Anticipating more rigid U.S. government regulation of tobacco, RJR has for several years been quietly building cigarette manufacturing capabilities in Vietnam and other countries. ...

Helms has refused to answer written requests from The U.S. Veteran Dispatch for an explanation of how the growing and manufacture of tobacco products in Vietnam helps the embattled tobacco farmers in this country.

Soon after entering the tobacco business in Vietnam, RJR corporate managers realized they could not protect RJR's Vietnam investments without U.S. taxpayer sponsored Overseas Private Corporation Insurance (OPIC). Businesses covered under OPIC would be reimbursed with U.S. tax dollars if, for example, Vietnam's Communist Party decided to confiscate U.S. business investments in Vietnam. ...

Soon after Helms inherited the chairmanship of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1995, mega contributions began pouring into the Helms political machine from a virtual who's who of corporations lobbying to expand and protect their businesses in Vietnam and China.

32. Try Maurice Bessenger , I'll paste info
He's a racist BBQ restaurant owner from South Carolina.

http://www.mauricesbbq.com/politics/index.html

Right Wing Barbecue--Maurice Bessenger's Piggie Park, 1600 Charleston Hwy. (tel. 803/796-0200; www.mauricesbbq.com), may be the South's most controversial eatery. All because of the Confederate flag-waving Maurice himself. Even though his politics are to the right of Attila the Hun, he has his fans, who claim his barbecue is the best in the South. Critics, on the other hand, dismiss his sauce as a "gloppy mess." Go or not -- it's up to you. As our astute editor put it, to ignore Maurice is "like ignoring a 800-pound gorilla in the room." The sauce of this self-proclaimed "Undisputed Barbecue King" is mustard based, his meats hickory smoked. So, to be called "yellow-
bellied" means you've eaten his sauce. Good ol' Bubbas and "Bubba-ettes" file into this dive at the rate of 20,000 customers a week. So what's the rub? Maurice's politically incorrect views turn off many diners. Maurice isn't big on flying the U.S. flag -- not when he has the South Carolina state flag and the Confederate flag to fly over his joint. He doesn't have much good to say about "left-wing one worlders," and don't even ask him what he thinks of same-sex marriage! Even Lincoln comes under attack for issuing "illegal" executive orders. And if there's anyone left in the world who is a budding Aunt Jemima, Maurice will be happy to sell them a Confederate bandanna. The most damning charge made against Maurice is that he has a "racist past and approves of things that most Americans would find offensive -- such as slavery," to quote a column by newspaper reporter John Monk. In truth, many chains, sensitive to public reaction, no longer carry Maurice's food products -- and lots of folks simply bypass the loopy diatribes to get to the pig. For a full blast of Bessinger's message, you can purchase his book, Defending My Heritage, in the so-called "Truth Store" on-site. If you simply want to try his food, a "Big Pig" chopped barbecue and ribs begin at $9.99. Open daily 10am to 10pm.

boosh. Their lust for money is so great they are willing to let a theocracy take over, support labor practices that destroy the middle class, and support an administration built on one lie after another, including character assignation against vets, ie Kerry and Hackett.

Words aren't enough to describe my emotions towards flavor of the month Jessica simpson, who supports a party that wants to regulate my daughters womb (including making birth control illegal) while she struts around with fake boobs and hyper sexuality, all for money, of course.

146. Rudolph was on Bernie's list ...
I'm pretty positive that Eric Rudolph was on Bernie's list. You see, that's what a Republican has to do to get on Bernie's list - they have to kill people in cold blood.

Clarification: They have to kill people in cold blood with their own hands. If you kill people with tanks and bombs, that makes you a great American.

dumbing down of America and also, pretending that the news is fair and NOT agenda driven.

For instance, the other day the AP had a story about Clinton being offered a bunch animals from an African Tribal leader for Chelsea's hand in marriage. As if that wasn't stupid enough, this apparently happened quite some time ago, the AP gave the payoff line as Clinton still hasn't answered, therefore the story was current. This was reported as if it was actual news. But nothing about Rove, Iraq, the Hackett race or anything that really mattered.

All the CEO's of Exxon Mobil (I think that is the correct company) for the biggest public relations campaign in the history of the world, using fake science to dispute Global Warming.

George Will because he is a total shithead.

I guess I didn't need to add that last part, but I can't stand that man.

70. Newt Gingrich--debased debate (pol who talked like talk radio demagogue)
Before Newt, there was a certain bar of propriety that politicians of both sides roughly adhered to when speaking on the record about their opponents.

Before Newt, Reagan did all the happy talk, and the attacking was left to the surrogates in talk radio (after Fairness Doctrine was abolished).

Newt used the same inflammatory rhetoric of talk radio, blaming liberals for everything including Susan Smith killing her kids.

When I watched the January 6 protest of Ohio's electors, Republican after Republican who got up sounded as rude as Rush, defaming and mistating the grievance of their opponents.

Thanks Newt.

Before him the GOP at least tried to explain and debate their ideas.

Now their idea of debate is akin ro re-education during the Cultural Revolution in China.

71. Jennifer Dunn and John Stossel
Jennifer Dunn who is a former senator from Washington State who actually did nothing and is nobody to be remembered, except for this - She ran 2 campaigns on the issue of values, so loved Reagan, that she named her son Reagan, but get this - in the eight years she was back in DC, she had an affair and divorced her long time husband and father of her children (above Reagan). What makes this so laughable and notable and worth consideration on your list, is that she is considered a sacred cow here in Washington State and the epitome of Family Values. For petes sake, this isn't some middle aged horny sleazy old guy, like B Barr, but a church going, values spouting middle aged woman, and a perfect example of Republican hypocrisy.

John Stossel (not sure if this is the correct spelling of his name) because he just has some evil ideas, like this country does not need any civil rights laws. That boycotts would solve all. Let me tell you, as someone who grew up in a integrated city and then moved to a very rural area, this is one strange idea. Where I live, people are just openly racist, more open or less open depending on the age of the person, with some of the oldsters throwing around the N word with hostility. Some of the older townie business's would love to be able to hang a sign on the door, whites only. Mr. Stossel feels that this would be fine, and if you don't like it ,you just boycott the business. Yeah, like anyone up here is going to join a civil rights boycott. And you can add ABC to my list for giving such a person a soapbox.

Hey if you need any help writing or researching your project - let me know, I am having a great time venting here.

105. He's also the source of a key talking point on Iraq.
Edited on Mon Aug-08-05 09:04 AM by CBHagman
Luntz is the one who came up with the phrases that Bush, Scott McClellan, and other Republicans employ to justify going to war in Iraq. They'll say something on the order of "September 11th changed everything" and "It's better to fight the terrorists on the streets of Baghdad than on the streets of New York or Washington, D.C."

And then today we pick up the paper and discover the Defense Department has a number of plans to deal with multiple terrorist attacks in the United States. Gee, I guess we're REALLY safer now. :sarcasm:

Here's the link to what Luntz did. I'm surprised there's been so little discussion of this in the mainstream media.

Andreesen is a unbridled capitalist free-trader shithead. He sympathizes with the jobless? Bullshit!

Anyone who unabashedly supports the elevation of one middle class at the expense of the other, supported by nothing but faith-based neo-conomy free-trade ramblings is no ally of mine or American workers. SO easy to spout such grave-dancing crap when he's not ever in his LIFE going to be affected by the practice. Offshoring has devestated progress in mine and many other fields, will continue to have long-term effects on this country and is a zero-sum game any way you slice it.

Hillary's the same damned way. For supposed Democrats, they're sounding like Neil Cavuto's country club guests on this issue.

And the pedophile priests of the catholic church. Not that the two are connected. As odious as some of Robertson's views may be, he hasn't been molesting little kids, to my knowledge.

Irving Kristol, Richard Viguerie, Paul Weyrich, Vin Weber, etc. Lots of these people are responsible for catapulting the rightwingers into power during the Reagan era about 25 years ago or more...

And Laurie Mylroie of the American Enterprise Institute, whose mission has been to write books linking Iraq with 9/11...

Oh yeah, and Jack Abramoff and Ralph Reed...and David Horowitz, too...

I would've named more, but you all beat me to it!
