I hope the current crew make it back alive but no matter what the shuttle has to be shut down. There are lots of alternatives that haven't been looked into because all the money went to the shuttle program. SpaceShipOne, for example, is a workable idea. All that is needed is an increase in scale.
Meanwhile, we're falling back on the Russians to use their tried and true old capsule system to take up the slack. Back to the Future!
