Where do right wingers come from? |
|
I've been thinking about that...
Remember those kids who tore the wings off flies in grade school? Those people no doubt grew up to be right-wingers. The impulse is the same: that the bigger and more powerful have a prerogative to push around the weak and punish them for their weakness. Base cruelty and bullying clearly is at the heart of it for a lot of them.
I think it also has its roots partly in a Calvinism, that perversion of Christianity that teaches that some people are picked out by God at birth to be the "elect." It is the role of the "elect" to be the "vice regents of God" and to keep the rabble in line. (But, because the "elect" have special status, the same morality they would impose on others simply does not apply to them. Special rules for them.)
They are easy to spot the "elect," the righties will tell you, because they are the ones with all the advantages - wealth, in particular - all granted by God.

7. I think labeling our opposition... |
|
as right wing limits us as to how to educate them. Many Bush supporters are not religious or wealthy or republican. That is what I personally find disheartening. My in-laws are life long democrats and now support Bush 100%. They do not distinguish between Afghanistan or Iraq nor have the time or education/history to deal with stuff we do here on DU. Basically 9/11 gave them tunnel vision as it did millions of Americans as we can see by the 2004 elections.
RW chatter involving "the elect" and other rhetoric is mostly a southern or protestant christian thing. They see wealth as being "blessed by God" for those on their side. Meanwhile Soros, Kennedy, Heinz-Kerry is wealthy by Satan or some sort of crap.
Anyway, my point is most are reacting out of fear and not a sociopathical nature.(although I do wonder about most freepers)

...not all Bush voters are hard-core RWers. Many really ARE just uninformed, misguided or reacting out of fear. I was referring to the "true believers," the kinds if people who post on Free Republic and who go to work for RW think tanks or found mega churches,
