Something strange going on...
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 11:20 PM by ninty
For those of you who don't know, the Canadian Football League is in play right now, and I’m a season ticket holder of the Calgary Stampeders.

There was a game Saturday afternoon in which something strange happened and I’m looking for some insight into what exactly it is.

I was tailgating, like we usually do before a game when I saw a white Suburban with its hazard lights flashing driving around the parking lot in which we were having the tailgate. I snapped a quick picture of it with my camera phone, unfortunately, I had it set on the landscape mode which make everything fuzzy for some reason, so I apologize for the picture quality.

The thing that had me wondering was that there were two people in the truck. The passenger had his hand out the window and he was holding what seemed to be some sort of antenna similar to this:

I wondered to myself, why someone like that would be here. Their obviously not here to watch football, so why are they in the parking lot. I went around to the side of the truck to look inside. The passenger was holding something like a cell phone or GPS, and I could see a laptop computer in the center console. The truck had no markings, and the occupants also had no police or military markings.

After I went up to the side, the truck then continued around the parking lot until I lost sight of it. I didn't see it again.

I'm curious as to if anyone has any idea what this could have been. The plates on the truck were normal Alberta plates. Not government or military.

Could this just be an internet company checking for wireless connections, or something else?

The thing is, to get into the parking lot, you need a pass. They didn't have a pass so they had to have told the parking attendant something to which was sufficient enough to let the truck in.

Am I paranoid? No one else around me seemed to notice.

Thoughts?

6. Just a Joke - I'm sorry if it sounded mean.
I would be curious also. I had just stuck up that Spaghetti Monster thread and I was still laughing about it when I read your post. I didn't realize until now that it probably seemed as if I was being sarcastic.

3. Probably "war drivers" -
computer buffs with a directional antenna who look for open wireless networks. Generally, it's harmless. Sometimes, they can be malicious.

7. Another reason NOT to
use wireless.
If you use a laptop that has zero personal info on it, then you just have to worry about them planting a virus...
Bit never EVER get on a wireless network with any bank or other info...they can get it quick.
