FCC hires Christian Right lobbyist, Anti-gay, abortion foe as advisor

Penny Nance

Aug 9 - The Federal Communications Commission recently hired a prominent conservative Christian lobbyist and abortion opponent as a part-time advisor in the Office of Strategic Planning and Policy Analysis.

According to Reuters, an FCC spokesperson declined to say when Penny Nance was hired or what her specific duties entail. Nance will "liaison" with Congress and others, in addition to advising the Commission, the news service reported.

Nance is a prominent anti-abortion advocate who founded Kids First, an organization that promotes "traditional families." She also recently stepped down from the board of Concerned Women for America, a group that advocates melding more Christian principles into United States law.

Nance is a registered lobbyist and an outspoken critic of pornography, abortion and homosexuality, though she reportedly filed a notice with Congress terminating her position as a lobbyist for conservative groups.

9. It's coming now - people are just waking up now
Like my brother told me, W is an addict. He started out as an addict to alcohol and then transferred the addiction to Christian fundamentalism (his brand) but addicts always over do it. The people are seeing that now. I think even those with his same addiction are now seeing it.

This news story really bothers me. And the FCC 'won't comment' etc, etc. These monsters are so emboldened now.

7. Yeah, well, those thoughts are always in my head.
Especially after hearing the racial purity, the theocracy beginnings, the wars for false pretenses. "We're just takin' back what we Poland took from us." I feel sick.

16. But Orwell didn't have the net
We'll overcome. I mean the average American will overcome. Bush and his bushbot religious neocons live in a reality that isn't shared by too many of us.

We could learn form Ms. Sheehan. Speak your voice and stand up for your rights.

19. they're gearing up to censor that, too
They passed some deregulation (really authorizing monopolies) stuff so the ISP's will coalesce under a small number of companies (doubtless, neocon-owned). Then those will all ban all forms of self-hosting and utterly quash independent thought with netnanny filtering software (likely automatically calling in the Homeland Offense Gestapo to round up anyone who complains about the wars in the Middle East, oppressiveness of the PATRIOT Act, or 9/11 MIHOP etc.).

People, get a grip. This is called balance.
You have to make sure there are enough religious kooks to balance out the corporate mouthpieces. Both sides must be heard.

17. FCC hires FOX's "suburban stay-at-home mom" (Penny Young Nance)
FCC hires FOX's "suburban stay-at-home mom" (Penny Young Nance)
In July 2005 Penny Nance was hired by the FCC to the Office of Strategic Planning and Policy.

FOX's "suburban stay-at-home mom"

On July 19, FOX News Live anchor Bob Sellers identified guest Penny Nance as a "suburban stay-at-home mom." The text displayed on the screen while Nance discussed "what issues matter most to suburban moms" and whether Senator John Kerry can "count on their votes" indicated only that Nance is a former "full time lobbyist" who "started a nonprofit organization for moms." Yet Nance, who said on FOX News Live that she is "clearly in favor of President Bush," has made a career out of pushing conservative causes.

Penny Young Nance is the president of anti-abortion nonprofit organization Kids First Coalition, which "works to promote and encourage traditional families as well as to help those in crisis pregnancies." Nance is currently registered as a lobbyist for the group, according to filings with the Senate Office of Public Records. Nance is also a board member of the right-wing Christian women's organization Concerned Women for America, for which she formerly served as legislative director and lobbyist. Additionally, she is a former staff member of Representative Pat Swindall (R-GA). Nance also serves as president of Nance and Associates, a public policy and media consulting firm.

From the July 19 edition of FOX News Channel's FOX News Live:

SELLERS: So as John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards, hit the road, one special group they'll be courting along the way: America's women voters. ... Let's talk about one particular group of women the Kerry and Bush campaigns will be focusing on: the suburban moms, the so-called "soccer moms," as some of them are referred to. What issues matter most to suburban moms, and can Kerry count on their votes? In our studio, we're joined by independent pollster Scott Rasmussen and president of the RasmussenReports.com; and, in Washington, Republican pollster David Winston, he's president of the Winston Group; and Penny Nance, a suburban stay-at-home mom. Forget these guys who do this all the time, lemme just ask you, Penny, what are your feelings here? Are the candidates talking about the right things and who are you inclined to vote for?
