Does anyone know of any good books on socialism?
Particularly democratic socialism, economic socialism and social socialism?

I am getting curious about this form of political ideology.

Thanks!

Dee

2. The Long Detour by James Weinstein
Sort of an overview of socialism in America since the late 19th century.

3. Edmund Wilson's...
...To The Finland Station on the early days.

I recommend also Robert Heilbronner's The Worldly Philosophers. His section on Marx is worth it all on its own.

Socialism is a very old, and very diverse, school.

7. Socialism: Past and Future by Michael Harrington
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0451628543/qid=/sr=/ref=cm_lm_asin/102-0084145-7443350?v=glance

From Library Journal
As this may be Harrington's last major work (he is battling inoperable cancer), it is worthy of careful attention even though it covers some familiar territory. It is both a condensation of and a sequel to his massive theoretical study Socialism ( LJ 6/1/72), and it also refines and supports arguments put forth in writings such as Toward a Democratic Left ( LJ 3/15/68) and The Next Left ( LJ 1/15/84). He argues that socialist renewal is the only hope for progress and freedom in the next century and he tries to clear away the "deadwood of the socialist past." He is convincing in his application of classic socialist theory to current economic situations, and he examines the validity of the idea of "visionary gradualism" in bringing about a socialist agenda. Recommended for all academic libraries.

Articles by David North are especially worth reading.

10. Socialism is dead. Didn't work. Turned into Communism. Most
coutries in the world are some sort of Liberal democratic (if they are lucky) mixed market. That is when there is some socialist programs & especially when the markets alone will not deliver on goods that meet the needs of the national goals. Things like socialist heath care work better than the market and are thus in every Western Nation except the USA.

Look for the story of Tanzania. There was a place that really gave socialism without communism a try. And they had a very good leader.

Even Cuba doesn't follow socialist principles where it has markets. Tourism & Cigar exports go straing to market prices.

Socialist policies work when they are mixed with others.
