a potentially silly question |
|
is there any way that surviving parents of fallen soldiers could be "officially" given some kind of Veteran status themselves. I know they do in our hearts and minds but some overt recognition by VFW' for their sacrifice. Vtereans by proxy or something. It's early be gentle if its too stupid.

if I were the parent or spouse or child of a soldier who had fallen in the Iraq War, I might be offended by such recognition. I'm just not keen on the notion that I would ever feel honored by their death. But that's just me.

2. I didn't mean specifically the Iraq war |

In general. Maybe you're right though. Do we really need anything else honoring war at all? I do feel its important to honor sacrifce and that's the point I was making.

But I disagree. Veteran status is for veterans only. I personally think that your idea would potentially open a huge can of worms.
It may sound coldhearted, but as a veteran myself, it would really dilute our status which many of us are incredibly proud of.

The link to the LA Times story is next to the pic. Check it out if you haven't already.
The photo is powerful. No words are necessary at all.

Like I said in my post, it is a noble gesture.
Just providing a point of view.
