Military service isn't for our son. It isn't for our kind of people

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05223/552161.stm

Staff Sgt. Jason Rivera, 26, a Marine recruiter in Pittsburgh, went to the home of a high school student who had expressed interest in joining the Marine Reserve to talk to his parents.

It was a large home in a well-to-do suburb north of the city. Two American flags adorned the yard. The prospect's mom greeted him wearing an American flag T-shirt.

"I want you to know we support you," she gushed.

Rivera soon reached the limits of her support.

"Military service isn't for our son. It isn't for our kind of people," she told him.

This is why a part of me wishes we bring back the draft - but no damn exemptions for the "fortunate sons" of this kind of mom.

3. Some folks are born made to wave the flag...

Ooh, they're red, white, and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
They point the cannon right at you

It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no senator's son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, dont they help themselves
But when the tax man comes to the door,
Lord the house looks like a rummage sale

It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war
And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"
They only answer "More! More! More!"

It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one

It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one

2 flags? Twice more patriotic'er then her one-flag neighbors, and don't even get her started on those no-flag neighbors. They are probably liberals or something.

10. I'm originally from there
and I'm not surprised. BTW, it's heavily Republican. We're the district that brought you Little Ricky Santorum and his a**-wipe, Melissa Hart. My Mom and Dad are about the only two Dems in north Pittsburgh. When I went up there for Xmas, it was full of SUVs with "support the troops" ribbons and "W" stickers on the back.

And no, I'm not in the military. But I work for them as a civilian, and have for 18 years now.

I grew up a little further up Rt 28 in Freeport, but worked at the Yacht Club my first (and only) summer home from college.

The people there are, by and large, narcissistic assholes. This story sounds pretty much on point to me.

20. Me too Annie.
I am also a civilian DOD employee. It was easy to take all the military boosterism before Bush and this disgusting war. I'm not anti-military - just anti-militarism.

But now, it really gets on my nerves.

Perfect weather to take it to the enemy and show them how tough we are as we join the mad dogs and Englishmen in the noon day sun.

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/12352826.htm

Gennaro Pellegrini Jr., a Philadelphia police officer and amateur boxer, fulfilled at least one big dream before going off to fight - and die - in Iraq.

He wanted just one pro match, just one, at the legendary Blue Horizon boxing arena before shipping out at the end of last year with his Pennsylvania National Guard unit.

He got his fight. Four rounds. And he won it, decisively.

Iraq duty, with all of its uncertainties, followed.

<snip>

Pellegrini was just weeks away from the end of his six-year hitch with the Guard in April 2004 when his tour was summarily extended by 18 months.

Philadelphia police officers at the 26th Police District in Fishtown, where Pellegrini spent his four-year career. The flag is at half-staff, and a black banner hangs over the door.

18. Maybe I'm too cynical, but I think the rich will always find an out
when it comes to military service... But the point I was trying to make is that the middle class, what's left of it, can make change happen if it wants to. Right now, it's too easy to put that magnet on the car, and a flag in the yard, and yell "Go git 'em." Now, if little Jason may get drafted in a year or two, and Tyler not long after, they might get a clue about caring what they are voting for etc.

Not Bush's kind, not Cheney's kind, not Limbaugh's kind, not Delay's kind, ad infinitum the names of the biggest supporters of this damned war.

I guess it's for Casey Sheehan's kind of people.

That's right lady, fly your flags, wear your flag shirts, put your yellow ribbons all over the place and call yourself a patriot and supporter of our troops---but, don't urge your kids to enlist--after all, what has the country done for you---other than make you a "rich shit" who thinks the country OWES YOU!!!!!

she would have no problem with other sons and daughters of mothers dying in this war. She would consider it as being what they are there for.

And if others keep signing up to protect the oil to run her SUV there is little any of us can do about that. Its unfortunate. But I wouldn't let my kid go over to Iraq either.

27. Damned fool.
"Military service isn't for our son. It isn't for our kind of people," she told him. What a sack of crap.

While this stupid fool is merrily gushing, I would like for her to define 'her people' verses what she considers 'those other people.' Those who she would deem fit for military service! I think however, I know the answer.
If she supports this fuck-up she needs to put her words into action and allow her oh so very precious sonny-poo to fight it. Why should she deny him that OPPORTUNITY. I'm sure there are countless of 'other people' who'd welcome the chance to come home.
Besides, if the unthinkable would happen to her precious sonny-poo, she could always put her gold star on her suv and get all sorts of popularity points down at her mega church.
