Look at this LBN article http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4314040Iran is supportive of the Shiia in Iraq. If Iran was attacked by the US (or worse yet, by Israel) the civil war in Iraq would be on for sure. This demand for autonomy combined with the tensions in Iran significantly rearrange the pieces on the chess board in the middle east.

at the incompetence of these people. They saw both Afghanistan AND Iraq in total isolation and didn't take into account the social, ethnic or geographical ties of one country to another.
I swear.
As a Political Science Major in the lat '60s, my professors would have flunked my ass if I had even written a paper on the Middle east without taking these things into consideration. (My Major Professor has a large rubber stamp, dipped in red ink that said BULLSHIT! that he used quite liberally on term papers and essay exams when you tried to fake it) Now, people leading the country and setting policy are acting like the "D" students who sat in the back of the classroom.
