Well, I finally made to the Crawford site today.
I'm so glad I'm here.

My daughter and I started the day at the Crawford Peace House. There's lots of activity there, which feels like controlled chaos; and the folks who run the place are doing a fantastic job keeping everyone supplied in food, water, t shirts, umbrellas and other essentials.

They are also providing rides back and forth from the site.

We decided to drive up ourselves to get the "lay of the land."

After a nine (?) mile drive we came upon the large encampment that has sprung up around Cindy and her group.

The edict is given to everyone; do not infringe on the road. So, the gathering is a line up of canopies, tents, lawn chairs and vehicles, going up a side road, which is perpendicular to the main road to "the ranch."

We drove about 1/4 mile up ,parked at end of the line, and walked to the main group, accompanied by two charming young ladies from Code Pink..Susie and Heather.

On arrival, I was immediately struck by the number of press people there. Some were local, I met reporters from Dallas and Austin. I also met one from the Iconoclast. I also spoke to a "stringer" from CBS, as well as a group of South Korean journalists.

I met Vince, a fellow DU'er,vincardog(sp?) and he graciously steered me toward Will Pitt, who told us about the night they had experienced.

I spoke to Cindy to thank her for her courage and willingness to speak. She is being interviewed constantly, and when she's not being interviewed, she's constantly surrounded by well wishers.

I had a couple of moments to speak with her, and when she heard where we came from, she embraced me and said in my ear, "We just need to keep telling them, we won't let them do this anymore." I started tearing up and said, "Thanks for being so brave" and she said,"I'm not brave, I'm just saying what needs to be said."

She is a remarkable presence and I was so moved. She is very warm and hugs most people that she speaks to.

Well, as we hugged, I vaguely heard shutters going off, and when I walked off, three reporters ran up and started peppering me with questions.

"Who was I?", "Where was I from?", "Was I the mother of an Iraq soldier?"...this was somewhat upsetting because I was walking up to my daughter to share the moment with her and these folks jumped in between. I was still tearful and as my new friends, Susie and Heather said, "They intruded on your personal moment."

However, nothing could put a damper on that moment and I felt even more conviction to continue to speak out and do what I can to bring an end to this war and eventually, this corrupt regime.

That said, things are running fairly smoothly, and the main discussion was the arrival of condi and rummy. Right before we arrived at site this morning, we heard that three helicopters passed overhead, heading to the ranch.

I assisted for a while with the placement of the thousand crosses and acted as a shuttle for a couple of the folks at the site, back to the Peace House.

There are about 100 people here, and 75 or so at the Peace House. Everyone is eager to do something to help, so I had more "downtime" than I expected.

I listened in as a sheriff's deputy spoke with a reporter about the triangle of land that the group had been removed from.

The sheriff's deputy was actually friendly to all of us, and told the reporter he wished he owned that parcel.

When the reporter asked him if he would have let the protesters on his land, he replied "sure I would, and I would have made a fortune off the rent."

The locals here told me that the local law enforcement often feels "caught in the middle" when they are asked to do something at the behest of the SS.

My daughter and I need to pick up a couple more items, so we came back here to re-organize for our second trip to the Crawford Peace House and the site.

Of course, in the time we're doing this, I just had to post an update.

I'll try to post again, later. MKJ

20. Well, he said it in a humorous way, There were several of us listening
as he was interviewed and we all laughed.

It seemed evident that he didn't agree with owner of the little triangle of land of the road, and was giving a little dig to him/her.

It felt like a subtle endorsement of our free speech rights. I'm sorry I didn't do a better job of communicating this in my OP.

Cindy looked pretty good today. She certainly seems energized by all the folks there supporting here.

Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 04:12 PM by I Have A Dream
money via the PayPal account or to actually ship things that they need to them? (I've already donated, but I'm absolutely willing to do more if they need it.) Are there people there who are handling getting supplies for them with the money that has been donated, or has this been a problem?

I'm sure that they need more money at this point because there's going to be more people traveling there and possibly several more weeks of time (hopefully not more), but are they at least getting enough to keep them comfortable so far? (I'm hoping that they're not going without things that they need. If so, we need to know this. We take care of our own!)

Thanks so much, BleedingHeartPatriot!

35. I just got off the phone with Kay and I talked with Hadi earlier and what
they really need are a few good volunteers, take charge type people that can help. Answering phones, helping selling the shirts, helping people in the Peace House take care of whatever needs doing. She mentioned more food (brisket, beans, etc, call The Smokehouse Bar B Que, it's in McGregor, and order up, 254-840-3344, someone will have to go pick up).

The PayPal is working, the DSL is on.

Donations are good to make, especially with the large influx of people expected to be coming in.

Thanks everyone!

47. I've wanted to call to order food for them, but I was concerned...
that they'd get too much one day, not enough another day, etc. I wish that we could find a way to coordinate it so that this didn't happen. (They might have too much for lunch but not enough for dinner.) For example, it would be nice if I could call the Smokehouse Bar B Que, give them my credit card number with authorization to charge a certain amount and then allow the people down there to use it when it works best for them. Do you think that this would work, or would that be too confusing?

55. Probably very and too much confusing. Sad to say.
Pm me or just send a donation and we are getting on top of it all.

Short in voluteers to run errands and etc. It could be something as small as "would you load up an ice chest with water", or could you drive a group "out there" or do you like to chop veggies to go in a soup?

Many more of us are heading down on Saturday that have been doing this in N Tex for a long time. Once again, this came on suddenly. We are all playing catch up in amazing ways.

I'm in awe of how much DU members have rallied, but then again if I think about it I should not be. We've been doing this a long time. I'm proud and then some to be a part of the DU Community along with my very dear friends in NTx and across this nation.

48. Good point, anarchy1999. I arrived a little later in the morning, and
it appeared things were under control at that time. We were welcomed in and offered breakfast, coffee, etc. and then encouraged to go the site.

I'm planning on arriving at the break of dawn tomorrow, and helping as they get going for the day.

One thing that's really needed; "shuttle drivers". The site is several miles out of Crawford, and parking at the site is at a premium.

Carpooling to and from the PeaceHouse makes sense, however, folks are still taking their cars because there's no regular time for the shuttle service.

I've done a couple of shuttle drives today. My last one was a fellow DU'er, liveoaktx.

One thing I want to say about donations: You will get the most bang for the buck with this contribution, since most of it will roll over directly to supporting Cindy's effort. MKJ

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 01:53 AM by anarchy1999
is needing any kind of help. It is our gracious manner, it is a fault, we'll kill ourselves first taking care of everyone and everything and never speak a word, it is "southern gentility, kindness, hospitality". You decide the word.

Once again, thank you all, DU, you have been really special.

On the contributions you make, I've been told that any you make will support this action as long as it last and there are some costs. When it is all over, whenever Bush Jr retreats to Camp David for the rest of the summer of whatever, Cindy intends to leave some amount behind at the Peace House for support of this endeavor. This action, this protest, whatever.

I know not all the details but rest asssured no dollar will not be used in a right way.

do not like feds -- be it FBI or SS or DEA.

In addition, they may think your making a fool out of yourself, but most of the small town people I know would be apalled at the reality of free speech zones and the like. In ther mind, the thing that makes us different than "commies" is the bible and the fact we can tell the govt we think they are full of shit.

33. This is just amazing - I feel like I really have hope in my heart again
this is just too much. I am bawling my eyes out right now

For the last 10 months I have been forcing myself not to be miserable about the state of things, and to have hope - some hope, however forced and artificial. And I have been doing okay with it, which is good...but now it's coming back in a really genuine way.

I am so grateful for you all for going down there and committing to the momentum of this movement. It is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed. I wish I could see it first hand, but all my time off is allotted to DC in September. I know that the energy is building and it will carry on to the DC events and the whole thing is just making me overflow with hope and faith.

The Lone Star Iconoclast has a pic of the land in question--apparently the owner has put up a "NO TRESPASSING" sign, complete with a drawing of the land, showing their ownership. What can you expect from Bushie "ownership" society?

I'd be embarrassed, if I were those people.

...thank you so much for the update. I actually worry about Cindy while I'm at work, even though she's obviously surrounded at all times. But the occasional paucity of information is rather frustrating. Thank goodness for cell phones and laptops.

I'm sending Cindy $10 c/o the Crawford Peace House (I assume everyone reading this has the address). I urge anyone and everyone who can spare even a buck and the price of a stamp to do likewise. If I didn't have a wife and three kids to feed, I would've sent more.

That's Michael's blog and he reposts news items and blog entries from others' blogs that he thinks his readership shouldn't miss reading. Check the archives, you'll see.

61. Sounds like this sheriff is trying to find a way to accomodate....
all the people. They usually try to work out some compromise for all. I'd bet if the so-called owner was there he'd try to convince her to give up her precious little patch of grass. I looked a Cindy's blog at MM site, seems there is a neighbor closeby that is sympathic, a medic just returned from the sandbox. That is good news. Perhaps in time the situation will improve. Keep the faith people....this is getting noticed in a big way.

58. Glad you're there
I'm glad you got to go and meet Ms. Sheehan. Sounds great and I'm glad everything is going well. :) The officer sounds nice. I'm glad nobody was arrested.

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 02:16 PM by Vincardog
When I was there they were asking for fans. They only had one window AC unit. PS it is Vincardog
