82. I used to be in the biz.
I don't know Viggo, but I can vouch for most celebrities being jerks. It's a very strange, sheltered life and I'm actually grateful that I dropped out when I had my chance at fame. I admire the few celebrities who manage to stay grounded and real. I have no doubt that it must be a daily struggle to preserve your identity and avoid all of the temptations.

the DELUSION.
I know a man, a mutual friend of Viggo's that had NOTHING, literally
at the time. he is actually the person I met Viggo through.
Well, the guy was brilliant in a musical sense, but could'nt get run over
here in LA by the music industry.
None the less, he had an amazing circle of support- people who
recognized his talent and helped him, even loved him- myself included.
Truth be told, I loved him more than any man I have ever known.

Well, he eventually hooked up with an artist that had a moment
of "fame" and promptly became far too good for us- the people
who had supported and loved him for years.

Fame does UGLY things to people.
I have seen it more times than I care to think about.
That is why I think VIggo is such an exceptional person-
I saw him briefly at a club after he became
quite "famous." GI Jane days I think, and he was the very same
person I had met years before. Humble, sweet and unpretentious.
Wish I could say the same of the other guy, who we all now
refer to as an asshole.

Speaking of which earlier last night I was watching TBN and surfing around and Oleta Adams was on and she was talking about how people are surprised to meet her and they always say she's so nice and stuff and she was talking about how she was always amazed at the attitudes some people in the industry have and the whole diva thing going on when in reality she's just a normal person just like anybody else. I'm sure it would for sure be tough. I'm sure her having religion and being a religious singer (Christian gospel music) helped of course and her up bringing and she just didn't care for that. I found that really admirable. I also think it all depends on how you look at things and who you surround yourself around as well whether you're religious or not. If you surround yourself by people who are "diva's" and arrogant and the like I'm sure it'll rub off on you as well.

Nice. Very talented person. Sounds like he was smart and got a backup in college too in case acting didn't work out. Too many times people get the "acting bug" or whatever and want to be famous and don't think about the "what if's" and think they can easily get an acting job or be a singer or something. I want to do the music industry but I'm going to college now for a backup while I'm working on that. I don't want to have nothing if the music ambitions don't work out. Sounds like that's what he did which is very smart.

myself! Seriously, Viggo is a great actor. I would recommend all of his movies. He was in a movie that was produced and directed by Sean Penn called "The Indian Runner" where he played a vet that had just returned from the Viet Nam war. Really intense, disturbing movie, but thought provoking.

He's really diverse, he also played the really mean (until the end) drill guy in GI Jane. Remember the guy Demi Moore has a fight with , Ugayle or something like that is the characters name, and tells him to suck her d*ck. That was Viggo as well.

We should definitely all support Viggo. He is one of us!

98. "Indian runner" was great, inspired by springsteen's "highway patrolman"
..."nothing feels better than blood on blood
man turns his back on his family
he ain't no friend of mine"

so true. my brother surprised our family last thanksgiving, appearing in the driveway just before dinner. he was supposed to be 2,000 miles away.

i wept when i saw him and thought of just those lines.

viggo made a fan of me playing "frankie" in that movie.

the guy is a class act, all the way.

but I thought he was a good actor. Didn't realize who he was until after I'd seen the second LOTR film.

It's wild that his ex-wife (X-wife?) Exene Cervenka is back on the road with a new band...sorry, complete mental block on name. Someone will help me out here I'm sure.

Way to go, Viggo!!! Thanks for supporting the truth and one brave mother.

He is the sweetest most humble person you could ever

He used to do spoken word/musical events at a local

He is also a very talented photographer.
Try to buy a copy of his spoken word recording if

60. Yes, Viggo is an excellent person
as well as an excellent actor. It is very noble of him to support such a cause.

On the issue of LOTR applying to the real world, one famous scene from ROTK comes to mind. In this scene, Denethor orders Faramir to retake Osgiliath which is overrun by the armies of Mordor. Hundreds of troops march towards Osgiliath while Denethor stuffs himself like a glutton and while Pippin is singing to him. I couldn't help but thinking of Denethor as Bush, ordering his troops to their death in Iraq instead of defending Minas Tirith (USA) against the coming attack. Go and watch the Return of the King and compare it to current events. The comparisons are incredible.

92. Hmmm...
Well, I rather considered Bush as Sauron returned to power in Mordor. Or maybe as one of the ringwraiths: serving evil in pursuit of great power. *shrug*

beautifully done. I cry my eyes out every time I see it.

Home is behind

And there are many paths to tread

To the edge of night...

103. Good call lady hawk
that scene made that whole movie transcend beyond a mere popcorn movie into a historical piece of filmaking. The editing, pacing and sound design was perfect. I was very awed to learn it was Mr. Boyds own pipes belting out that song. He gave the Annie Lennox tune at the end a real run for its money. It deserved every award it won. Even a tough Gondorian like myself weeps every time I see it ;O)and every time I see it I see the parallels to our current situation. We need heroes like that now. I think we may have found our Eowyn but the rest of the crew would be helpful.

54. if you mean about the "no TV", not my post, but I've heard him say it
in an interview.

He was being interviewed on a late-night show (Letterman, maybe?) and he mentioned it as he was nominated for the Oscar and didn't want to watch the ceremony at a friends house.

He went on to talk about how he really disliked TV and all the garbage it brought into our lives (I'm paraphrasing from memory).

I also remember he was quite knowledgeable on all kinds of current affairs, so he must read quite a bit.

The day may come when the courage of America fails,
when we forsake our heritage of freedom and break faith with
those who have fought to defend those freedoms against
all enemies, foreign and domestic.

But it is not this day.

The day may come when America believes the lies of the
Wormtongues who speak of "phantoms of lost liberties" while
jailing people without hearings and limiting dissent to
designated First Amendment zones.

But it is not this day.

The day may come when Americans no longer hold their
constitutional birthright so dear that they will pledge
their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to defend it.

But it is not this day.

This day, we fight.

We fight to take our country back.

Will you join us?

"G'Quan wrote, "There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way." The war we fight is not against powers or principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting in moments of transition to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain." -

83. Get ready to love him even more...
This is from an article on Salon.com back in October of 2003:
Scott Thill: Well, I'm pretty sure (politicians and government officials) don't (even know what the Bill of Rights is about) right now.

VM: The way things are going, there won't be much more than a lot of asterisks, anecdotal information, historical footnotes left of what was the Bill of Rights. Much of it is in grave danger of being invalidated or erased completely. The language and tactics used -- like enacting Homeland Security, the PATRIOT Act, co-opting the flag and other national symbols -- are all techniques of the Big Lie. The way this administration, without justification, neatly linked Saddam Hussein to the 9/11 attacks and al-Qaida, for example, is a bold lie.

It's a huge lie, but if it's repeated often enough, it doesn't matter if long-overdue, halfhearted disclaimers are proffered later on, or even if the media itself make retractions. People are going to remember and believe the initial lie. If they say an individual has three heads and has sex with rabbits, people will say, "It does sound ridiculous, but there's gotta be some truth to it." Even if they say the next day, "Look, here's a photograph of this person and there are no visible scars from the other heads having been surgically removed. He clearly only has one head and there are no rabbits in sight."

You read about Bush saying just the other day that he knows Hussein is not connected to 9/11? Well, it's nice that you say that now, so long after the fact, after all the needless suffering, destruction and ill will generated toward the United States. I mean, I can't count how many times he has consciously linked Hussein and al-Qaida in his speeches before, during and after the war. He kept doing it and didn't retract any of it until after we'd already done incredible damage, to not only Iraq but also America's credibility, image and standing in the world. To say nothing of the ordinary American and Iraqi lives lost or irrevocably harmed. It's a little too late to say that. It's like that retraction on Page 14 about the story of the guy with three heads who fucks rabbits -- a little too late now! That guy's gonna be denying that story for the rest of his life, pulling down his shirt collar to show there are no scars.

Much more at the link and well worth the read.

85. Vini, Vici, Viggo!!!! I have been a Viggo fan for years!!!
I'm on his yahoo group, etc. I probably should be embarrassed since I'm in my 30's, but he is just such a stand up guy.

Back in 2003 before the war started he wore a homeade t-shirt on the Charlie Rose show that said "No Blood for Oil." It caused a pretty big disturbance. He is a real activist and has spoken at a couple of anti-war rallies. He is an artist, a poet, an actor, and a musician. His poetry is very moving. I have several of his books and would love to own one of his paintings, but they are out of my reach financially. You should visit his publishing company and support his efforts as well as the other progressive people he and his company back:

I had read and reread all of Tolkien's books over the years, and can honestly say that nobody would have fit the part of Aragorn/Strider as well. 125. Has anyone seen "We Were Soldiers?"
Its a Mel Gibson film that tell not only the story of the first major military actions in Vietnam, led by Gibson himself, but it is also shows the other side of war...THE SIDE OF THE SOLDIER"S FAMILIES AND THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THE LOSS OF THEIR LOVED ONES TO WAR!

So, I ask, where are YOU Mr. Gibson?

133. The San Francisco Chronicle mentioned his visit in an article about Cindy.
Bush's response didn't seem to dampen the mood at Sheehan's vigil. She kept a cell phone glued to her ear most of the day doing interviews, pausing only to hug supporters who came from as far as Belgium, while others prepared signs to wave at passing cars.

Among the supporters was actor Viggo Mortensen, co-star of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. He spent a few moments privately with Sheehan, thanking her for her protest.

Mortensen, a longtime activist and one of the first actors to wear an anti-war T-shirt on national television, gave Sheehan a raft of gifts: a handful of "No Blood for Oil" T-shirts he had painted; a copy of George Orwell's "Animal Farm"; a book by author and activist Howard Zinn; and "Twilight of Empire: Responses to Occupation," a book co-written by Jodie Evans, who is a top organizer with Sheehan's vigil.

135. I'm coming late, on this thread
But I, too, am particularly impressed with Viggo Mortensen. Not only by his acting skills, but his dedication to art. He owns a press that publishes art books, and some poetry. I had the distinct googly eyed honor of being in a literary magazine with some of his work.

My fantasy is that he read my name, and my poem. And that he wants to marry me. :)
