Dan Grech, NPR's Marketplace.....Otto Reich's stooge? or what?
Edited on Thu Aug-11-05 07:26 PM by Gabi Hayes
Does anybody listen to "Marketplace" on NPR? I usually don't, cause it's such a crappy bit of market-driven slop, but today's story by one Dan Grech was simply more than anybody should have to swallow.

It sounded like something that came directly from the late-unlamented Office of Public Diplomacy, a hatchling of maniacs like Otto Reich
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Office_of_Public_Diplomacy
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=office+of+public+diplomacy++otto+reich+robert+parry&btnG=Search
during the Reagan administration.

Grech's screed was directed at Hugo Chavez, about which he seems to have a real thing, based on what little bit I've been able to find out in my extensive search over the last several minutes.

Anyway, tonight's show is a MUST listen. He talked about how Chavez is trying to insinuate himself with other countries in South America via buying up debt (Ecuador, Argentina), making friendly with Bolivia (he has a clip from the former US ambassador to Bolivia, talking about what a bad guy Chavez is).

Then, he insinuated himself with some Pentagon official ("It's only 9:15 AM at the Pentagon, but alread so and so has his sleeves rolled up....") and has this guy again spreading the word about how Chavez gives cheap oil to the bankrupt economy of Cuba--that might have been from Grech (this was all on the spur of the moment, but you get the picture)--and is using oil as its vehicle to become a force in the central/south american political arena.

The whole thing was the BALDEST attempt to paint Chavez as Castroish figure (but with REAL clout because of the oil reserves); a clear and present danger in the region

PLEASE, somebody, if you know anything about this Grech character, post something (not much on google)

PLEASE listen to tonight's Marketplace. his show came on just before the half-hour mark. I don't know if it's an hour, or hour and a half show. I'll check

I just found this bit from a few months ago, from a website that looks very much like a spinoff from something out of Robert Parry's "Lost History" or "Fooling America."

DAVID BROWN, anchor:

Now let's get back to that business about Iran. You've heard President Bush talk about Iran's mullahs. Just for giggles here, if one of those mullahs were to pay a state visit to the Americas, maybe stop in for dinner with some left-leaning leader, just imagine the fits that would give the White House, huh? Perhaps that's what Mohammad Khatami has in mind. Iran's president is visiting Caracas, Venezuela. From the Americas desk at WLRN, Dan Grech tells us it's officially a business trip, with perhaps a little pleasure on the side.

DAN GRECH reporting:

Tractors. Iran's president supposedly traveled 7,000 miles to inaugurate a plant that will build tractors for Iran. The two leaders also reportedly talked about sharing technology in oil, mining and manufacturing. Of course, Khatami's three-day visit with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez isn't really about tractors. Both Chavez and Khatami have stormy relationships with Washington.

Professor JERRY HAAR (Florida International University): Any nefarious power that is at odds with the United States, Chavez will bend over backwards to invite as a way of thumbing his nose at the United States.

GRECH: That's Professor Jerry Haar at Florida International University. He says it's a stretch to think that these two nations have much hinged on these deals. Across Latin America, Chavez's anti-US crusade has been treated as something of a side show, but Middle East expert Walid Phares says Chavez is getting some real traction in the Persian Gulf. Chavez reinforced that today when he expressed support for Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Mr. WALID PHARES (Middle East Expert): Back in the Middle East, there was this new perception that it's possible that they could get an ally very close to the southern shores of the United States, and that would be Venezuela.

GRECH: Is this something that the United States is worried about?

Mr. PHARES: This is something that the United States is monitoring. This visit is coming at a time where Iran wants to strike in the back yard of the United States, politically of course, telling them that, `If I am under siege, then there will be a lot of spots around the world that will be perturbing your stability.'

GRECH: Experts say these two oil-producing nations do share one overriding economic goal: cripple the US by sending oil prices sky high. I'm Dan Grech for MARKETPLACE.

the clip from above is very similar to what Grech spewed tonight, and bears looking into.

if anybody knows anything about this, PLEASE post here, or write to NPR about this incredibly blatant bit of propaganda....you'd have to have heard the tone, the particular words used to get the full flavofr of tonight's show, but it was very much like what I linked above.

this is what yours and my tax dollars are supporting, and it has to STOP!

Note the convenient linkage between our two newest, worstest enemies.
Will Venezuela be replacing Iraq in the Axis of Evil?

2. gee, what a surprise....wait and see how things heat up between
us and Venezuela....not that we'd try anything beyond the pale--like engineering a COUP, or accusing them of terrorism against Colombia, or anything like that

he's MSNBC's "terrorism expert" or something like that, and he presents himself as an uninterested party, but he's anything but...

5. thanks.....and thanks for that site....never heard of it
looks like FIU is one of those Florida CANF-related rats' nests

I was lying sick in bed when I heard that story, and "bravely rolled up my pajama sleeves," ala that hero Grech cited from the Pentagon, and crawled to my computer to link this

not feeling too hot, so this might be it for awhile for anything else, but I can't tell you how outraged I was as I listened to this report.

It really struck me that this is what the news must've sounded like from the old Soviet Union, or, say.....Fox?
