Kansas Moves to Stem Role of Evolution in Teaching

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas (Reuters) - After months of debate over science and religion, the Kansas Board of Education has tentatively approved new state science standards that weaken the role evolution plays in teaching about the origin of life.

The 10-member board must still take a final vote, expected in either September or October, but a 6-4 vote on Tuesday that approved a draft of the standards essentially cemented a victory for conservative Christian board members who say evolution is largely unproven and can undermine religious teachings about the origins of life on earth.

If they win final approval, Kansas will join Minnesota, Ohio and New Mexico, all of which have adopted critical analysis of evolution in the last four years.

The new science standards would not eliminate the teaching of evolution entirely, nor would they require that religious views, also known as creationism, be taught, but it would encourage teachers to discuss various viewpoints and eliminate core evolution theory as required curriculum.

1. Embrace this America, and embrace the future of the Third World.
I'm sick of education officially being looked down upon in this country.

People that can't deal with scientific data need to take a chill pill. How in the world is the future American work force do anything but sweep the floors at Wal-Mart if science is dismissed at every turn?

So what if all life evolved in a progressive, scientific process? How does that affect what type of person you can be THIS DAY?

There will be no future medical breakthroughs from people in this country, there will be no respected research, there will be nothing but "would you like fries with that".......

Stop it NOW.

3. How in the World can they be so IGNORANT????The school Board
is made of fundies is how....

They have a right to believe what they wish...but to shove FACTS ASIDE in teaching Public Kids is a moral CRIME....

EVOLUTION IS A FACT....How can one deny evidence that clearly supports Evolution...while there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE of Creationism?

10. Don't worry. The truth about Evolution is far to powerful to be
defeated by some lame brained notion. The real fact is that everything is continually evolving. Nothing is more self-evident. Darwin's observations were but a subset of the large body of the evolutionary processes. All evolves, plants, animals, minerals, shapes, everything continues to change in direct relationship to the characteristics of the influencing elements.

4. Pathetic. Just pathetic. I feel sorry for the intelligent kids
forced to have a sub-standard understanding of scientific methods and theory. Science is not for unsubstantiated guesses and blind faith but that's what they will be taught.

6. It Seems The Left, Right & The Media ALL Get It Wrong. Evolution Is An
empirical fact.

The issue at hand is whether we should espouse only one uproven and unprovable THEORY to explain HOW Evolution occurs.

You can no more prove that Evolution occurs due to nothing more than random chance than you can prove that it occurs to Nature's innate capacity for exhibiting Intelligence/Copnsciousness on different levels.

It's just as valid to say that Life Evolves DOWN from Consciousness as it is to say that Life Evolves UP TO Consciousness from Material Reality.
