BBC: Africa hunger 'likely to worsen'

The number of hungry children in Africa could increase by 3.3 million by 2025 if current policies remain in place, a new report has warned.



The number of malnourished people in sub-Saharan Africa has soared from 88 million in 1970 to 200 million in 1999-2001, the research found.

The overall percentage of malnourished Africans has actually remained constant over the past 30 years, at about 35%.

Absolute numbers have gone up due to Africa's population growth.

Severe drought, together with an invasion of locusts, have devastated crops and plunged huge parts of West Africa into crisis, particularly Niger, Mali and Mauritania.

In Niger alone, more than three million people are facing starvation - 800,000 of them are children. Drought is also beginning to affect huge areas of Southern Africa as well.

Oxfam is there

Oxfam is already reaching 130,000 people in Niger, and others across the region.
