In Defense of Globalization
Jagdish Bhagwati

Professor Bhagwati argues that well-meaning critics don't understand how, in the long run, the kind of free market economic globalization he supports helps to correct problems like the use of child labor in poor countries. He also argues that the practice of outsourcing has been wrongfully demonized in the U.S. Professor Bhagwati answers questions from the audience following his remarks.

Jagdish Bhagwati, professor of economics at Columbia University and a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, is the author of several books, including "The World Trading System at Risk," "Protectionism," and "The Wind of the Hundred Days: How Washington Mismanaged Globalization." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Muslim, Bad Muslim: America, the Cold War, and the Roots of Terror
Mahmood Mamdani

Mahmood Mamdani looks at the way Muslims around the world have been characterized by Westerners since the mid-1970s. Professor Mamdani argues that scholars like Samuel Huntington and Bernard Lewis have mischaraterized Muslims by claiming that they are either all potential enemies (Huntington) or split between "good Muslims," which the U.S. should support, and "bad Muslims," which the U.S. should undermine (Lewis). He says that the U.S. is reponsible for nurturing some of the most extreme Muslim groups during the Cold War, particularly in Afghanistan where the remnants of the U.S.-supported Mujahadeen eventually formed the Taliban government and filled the ranks of Al Qaeda. Professor Mamdani also talks about the U.S.-Israel relationship and answers questions from the audience.

Mahmood Mamdani is a professor of government at Columbia University and director of the university's Institute of African Studies. He is the author of several books, including "Citizen and Subject: Contemporary Africa and the Legacy of Late Colonialism" and "When Victims Become Killers: Colonialism, Nativism, and the Genocide in Rwanda."
