"They say there's going to be a terrorist attack by september 19th"
These words were spoken by my sister, who works for homeland security (as intern) in atlanta. A few of you may've seen my posts (I haven't been here long). I posted my day as a roleplayer there about a month ago. Some of you may remember.

I don't know how serious this is or any real details-- but I do think the people deserve to know.

Take of it what you will.

5. Dems should start trumpeting now, "Republicans are unable...
to protect you from terrorism. Bush said he would keep us secure but he is incompetent." Et cetera.

Because unless you frame the issue beforehand, the Republicans will use any terrorist episode to attack the Democrats and further the right wing agenda.

36. Well on Septmeber 11th...
1847 this happened:

Stephen Foster's first hit

"Oh! Susanna," by Stephen Foster, is performed for the first time. The song, which became Foster's first big hit, was played at a concert in a Pittsburgh saloon and soon became a standard for minstrel troupes. Foster wrote several other classic popular songs, including "Old Folks at Home" and "Beautiful Dreamer."

Coincidence? I think not.

13. Is her info related to that in today's NYT article?
WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 - A group of F.B.I. counterterrorism analysts warned this week of possible terrorist attacks in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago around Sept. 11, but officials cautioned on Thursday that they were skeptical about the seriousness of the threat.

The warning grew out of intelligence developed from an overseas source indicating that terrorists might seek to steal fuel tanker trucks in order to inflict "mass casualties" by staging an anniversary attack, officials said.

The information led F.B.I. joint terrorism task forces in Los Angeles and Newark to alert other government and law enforcement officials privately this week about the threat, law enforcement officials said. Several government officials in Washington who were briefed on the threat said it was described as credible and specific enough to warrant attention.

But other law enforcement officials in Washington and New York said that while they were aware of the warnings and were concerned about the Sept. 11 anniversary, they remained somewhat skeptical about the latest threat. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/12/national/nationalspecial3/12terrorr.html?ei=5065&en=12a3c4413593dcc4&ex=1124510400&partner=MYWAY&pagewanted=print

22. No, I think this bit of poppycock was put in the news cycle. . .
to deter wildcat trucker demonstrations against high fuel costs, such as occured in Florida the other day. Those sort of spontaneous demonstrations have a tremendous potential to cause massive traffic jams and garner rapid media attention, all for an issue that impacts every American's daily lives: the high price of fuel. The last thing the Oil Barons in Washington want is people getting galvanized against the one issue they claimed they'd be able to handle simply by "jaw boning" the Arabs.

They get a guy secretly on ice for terrorism. Then slip out a rumor from office X that they hear an attack is planned. They act like they are working their butts of then announce they captured a 'terrorist'.

Local office funding goes up, they get some awards, promotions, et al.Heck the guy could have been a good source whom they want to protect, so they publically arrest him and charge him and then he goes into witness protection while others think he is in jail :)

21. They MSM already reported to watch out for fuel tankers
it is too vauge to mean anything

If they "KNOW" there is going to be a terrorist attack by september 19th, WHAT DOES THAT SAY?

Are they doing there job?

Do they have something specific?

Or is this just another "orange" color alert that they used to have before homeland security got rid of it

I suspect that this is a distraction to boost their unfavorable poll numbers.

This is what they did during the campaign against Kerry. Remember right before the Democratic convention we went to a high terror alert? Remember right after Kerry's acceptance speech they release how they had captured a high ranking al queada in Pakistan, which not only blew the cover of an operation, but was three months before

The news is reporting that authorities say it is not a credible source. So, why are they putting it out there?

Agreed...distraction. It's a slow news month in August and we have to keep reminding people as we approach another anniversary of Sept. 11th. Wouldn't want it to sneak up on anyone. BOO!

37. It sounds bogus to me
Are they suggesting a fully-topped out fuel tank will be hi-jacked and "blown up" in rush hour traffic or something?

First of all, it seems unlikely that authorities wouldn't be on a hi-jacked truck within minutes. The communication systems truckers have would find that rig in a flash. And how, where, would it be "blown up".

Ah well. Maybe al Qaeda managed to acquire a hazardous license from the corrupt GOP here in Illinois and they've been working on this for that last three years.

It's possible, I suppose. And yes, we SHOULD all be alert. But this is from a source that is not credible or confirmed, according to the news reports. So, what they're saying is...worry about it, but don't worry about it because we don't know but wanted to remind you to worry about it. Carry on.

Press Release
Exercise to focus on nuclear terror scenario
Posted Jun 29, 2005 at 1:00:PM MDT

FORT MONROE, Va. -- Here’s the scenario…A seafaring vessel transporting a 10-kiloton nuclear warhead makes its way into a port off the coast of Charleston, S.C. Terrorists aboard the ship attempt to smuggle the warhead off the ship to detonate it. Is this really a possibility?

Joint Task Force Civil Support (JTF-CS) here is planning its next exercise on the premise that this crisis is indeed plausible.

Sudden Response 05 will take place this August on Fort Monroe and will be carried out as an internal command post exercise. The exercise is intended to train the JTF-CS staff to plan and execute Consequence Management operations in support of Federal Emergency Management Agency Region IV’s response to a nuclear detonation.

Some of this year’s objectives for SR05 are to refine nuclear incident Concept of Operations, produce a CM Operation Order, refine command post set-up procedures and maintain situational awareness of multiple CM incidents.

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 05:37 PM by McCamy Taylor
for *'s oil business buddies but no loss of life so poll numbers wont go down. This will help Congress pass more anti-energy legislation and open up more coastline for environmentally unfriendly drilling. No sources, just a hunch. Anyone who was planning a vacation to view the strategic oil reserves, stay away.

Some kind of weak ass nuclear bomb that the administration will pretend was pieced together by terrorists from Iranium nuclear materials would be just the ticket.
