Poll question: Will Bush attack Iran?
And please do add all your reasons for why you think the U.S. may or may not invade...

1. I think they'll attack, but I don't think they'll invade.
Airstrike is what I'm thinking. They want to target Iranian nuclear sites- even if they're only power plants. They simply don't have enough troops to invade.

3. Yeah, I'm thinking...
massive volleys of cruise missiles launched from the fleet stationed in the Persian Gulf.

19. nuclear air strikes
Did anyone else hear that - they want to hit Iran in 2500 locations with some new generation nuclear bombs?

9. Agreed.
Bombing from 30,000 feet, cruise missles, etc., probably to take out an Iranian nuclear reactor.

There's no way we could stage a land invasion of Iran, it's something like three times the population of Iraq (68 million vs 26 million) and we have no army anymore.

2. PNAC demands that we break the Middle East, that we have constant
war. Their whole philosophy is "from destruction comes construction" which is why they are desperate to tout all the schools we've built in Iraq.. yet never mention we were the ones who broke them.

4. There will be an incident
similar to 9-11.....

I don't see how else they can get the public to go along with it
but I've no doubt that war with Iran is on the agenda

11. not to be re-elected
but to get the public support...the majority of people now feel that the Iraq war was a mistake,,,they don't want another war without a damned good reason

14. He will tell the people that gasoline will rise to $6.00 a gallon unless..
he took initiative to invade or bomb them.

His insanity is all about how much more insane he as compared to others.

Like don't expect rational already. A major issue with any psychopath is keeping one jump ahead of the competition

7. Yes, they'll invade.
There'll be a war resolution in the fall of 2006 in time for the mid-term elections, and then a draft in December, and then a realignment of forces worldwide, followed by an invasion. These bozos have become painfully predictable, and they never learn from their mistakes.

But I'm just guessing.

10. Iran? No, he'll wait until Israel
attacks and then come to the defense of one of our most important our allies in his war on "terrer". What better excuse, then he can be a hero all over again.

12. The scenario as I'm guessing it. . .
Is as follows:

1. Another 9-11 type incident happens.
2. The incident is somehow linked back to Iran.
3. The US makes impossible-to-comply-with demands on Iran.
4. Iran refuses to comply.
5. The US conducts limited airstrikes on Iran.
6. Iran retaliates, either in Iraq or the Persian Gulf.
7. The US launches massive airstrikes against Iran.
8. Iran declares war and moves ground troops into Iraq.
9. The US is forced to activate the draft.
10. Things get even worse.

As for reasons, some or all of these probably play a part:

1. Control over remaining oil resources as Peak Oil hits.
2. To solidify neocon control of the US government, and protect themselves from prosecution for misdeeds already done.
3. Because the military-industrial, energy, and state sectors are about the only functional parts of our economy left, and war will help them grow.
4. Inertia from the sheer size our military has grown to and the political impossibility of scaling it back.
5. Almost everyone connected with the current administration stands to profit more from war than from peace.
6. War is only undesirable if you actually have to fight in it or lose property because of it.
7. Without war, the US is facing an ignoble Soviet Union-style economic collapse and loss of superpower status. The proposed euro-denominated Iranian oil exchange is just one cog in this wheel.
8. Israel will not allow Iran to develop nukes.
9. To help bring about the End Times and fulfillment of prophecy.
10. Because "they" hate our freedoms. :P

I'm sure there are many more. The better question, since we know they want to, is why might the current Administration NOT attack Iran. I can think of the following reasons off the top of my head. None are really convincing.

1. Possibility of the war escalating into WWIII. Many of them want this precise result.
2. Possibility of the US losing the war. With nukes we can't actually lose against Iran. Iran has no ability to cause any serious damage on American soil. Any defeats, losses, or setbacks in the theater of operations will provide impetus to expand the military sector back home and provide stimulus for the economy.
3. Severe disruption of global oil production and supplies. Disruption of Middle Eastern oil supplies will cause more harm to our economic competitors than to us. The actual oil will still be there for the taking later.
4. Possibility of a coup or civil uprising in the US. This danger can be managed and mitigated, but probably never eliminated. No plan is ever completely risk-free.
5. Because starting a war with Iran for the reasons above is morally bankrupt. Neocons with morals?

17. neocon agenda
The neocons think they have to prove themselves as the strongest miltary power in the world. To do it they have to invade Iran. Otherwise they look like whimps. Also, think of all the money to be made for Haliburton, et al.
I wish they would leave Iran alone, but I'm afraid it might already be too late. Maybe having Cindy Sheehan out there is the only thing standing in their way. They cannot justify it if they lose support on their last folly.

But the more important question is, can we stop him?
