To the men and women of our military, here are a few things I would like to transmit to you (from us lefty liberals):
1. Thank you for doing the job you agreed to do when you signed on the dotted line. Whether one agrees with what you are doing or not they should know that YOU held up your end of the contract you signed.
2. WE have let you down, you did not let us down. You agreed to give up years of your life in service to this country, and we have thrown you to the wolves to be killed. You went into Iraq, you got saddam, and yet you are still there getting killed daily. You did the job the country sent you to do, but some want to keep you there for target practice. You deserve better then you have gotten. By far.
3. We on the left support you, we don't support bush and how he has used you. I can't think of anyone in the armed forces who just wants to hang out in Iraq getting shot at. You went in, did the job, and then got stuck there instead of your leaders working with other countries to help things along. He snubbed them and left you there to pick up his mess. You were screwed. We support and love you, it is your leader we have problems with.
4. Your families miss you, so do we. We protest and rally because we want you to come home - safely. There are some in this country that want you to stay there, we oppose that because we support you - they support an administration.
5. It is not about dem/rep - both sides are to blame. You are not to blame. You did your job, the officials we elected (some) did not do their job. We do not support the goals we see the administration as having, we do not support tossing you out there to be killed for nothing but profit for some, we do not support pulling you from your happy lives here and tossing you in some foreign land to die. There are many things associated with what you have been tasked to do we do not support. And part of the reason we don't support it is because we DO support and care for you.
6. I don't care about the oil, about the politics around all this - as a father I care about you being able to be home to see your kids, to hug them, to spend time with them. You are there to defend America - you are being used for an agenda, IMHO, that bush has. I will go along with the core - for you - that saddam had to go. Well, he went. And now you are there getting killed, long after 'mission accomplished'.
7. I don't like war, I despise it. I am sure you are not real fond of it either as you are the ones getting killed in this war. Some of you, very few, are doing some shitty things to other people. I have faith in the majority of you that you are doing your best to be good people in a bad situation. Don't think that because we attack the bad apples that we think you all are. We don't. But don't expect us not to call people on it when they committ war crimes - just like in the US when a crime occurs we prosecute it and discuss it, we do the same when our people do the same elsewhere.
8. I am not asking anyone to dessert, quit, et al. You signed up, you were given orders, my problem is with those giving the orders. You did what you were hired to do - they are not. Excuse our dust are we rebuild this country - and work to bring you home. Our military folk kick ass, and are excellent in the job they do. Our leaders are another matter.
Even if I don't agree with things I thank you for doing what you were hired to do - that is a lot more then the elected officials in this country can say. They let us and you down, our goal is to get you home safely.
