Oh for (smurf)'s sake. Stop removing this thread!!!!
Is homosexuality normal? No. No it is not. But neither are twins, or triplets, and we celebrate those as God's creatures. So stop with the goddam PC of this thread, and realize what people are saying .

Being gay is not the norm.

So?

We celebrate our DIFFERENCES here!!

6. no, it's not normal, but normal is boring.
if you are gay, you are different. and this country SHOULD celebrate those who are different!!

Yay!Different!!!

Do you get it? We should celebrate ALL humans. Those who have different feelings for people of the same sex, and those that were born straight.

13. You're running into (or starting) a semantics debate.
The word "normal" is very pliable.

I think most of us would agree that being gay is natural, and that it is probably not as common as being heterosexual.

There's also the argument that sexuality is a grey-scale, though, too.

In any case, putting it that way is a little more specific and not so open to misinterpretation.

29. I'm gay. I'm also disturbed by your persistent efforts to define "Normal."
Homosexuality is found throughout all of the NATURAL world. Do your homework before spreading your thinly-cloaked bigotry. I refuse to be merely "tolerated." I demand ACCEPTANCE. ONe day, GLBT peoples will find it. But you're not helping, Karen. Your crude efforts to insist upon gayness as being "abnormal" are really starting to rankle me. Now, do you get it?

17. the interesting questions are: How are norms constructed? What are
the tactics, the discourses, strategies in use to constuct normality. How does it become possible to think of one type/individual as being the norm --and not others. etc etc.

11. Please see def'n #3
in m-w:

Main Entry: 1nor·mal
Pronunciation: 'nor-m&l
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin normalis, from norma
1 : PERPENDICULAR; especially : perpendicular to a tangent at a point of tangency
2 a : according with, constituting, or not deviating from a norm, rule, or principle b : conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern
3 : occurring naturally <normal immunity>

by this sense, it is indeed normal.

12. It is normal
Would anyone dare say that having dark skin or almond eyes is not normal? Just because the largest percentage of American's currently have Northern European ancestors doesn't make light skin and round eyes any more or any less normal than those who have dark skin or almond eyes. Same with being gay!

14. You're using different terms as if they are interchangeable
Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 08:56 PM by Boomer
"Not normal" is a different term than "not the norm."

The first has a judgmental connotation implying dysfunctional aberration, whereas the second term is more commonly associated with statistical analysis.

A baby with two heads is "not normal." But a baby who is red-headed is perfectly normal, even if s/he is "not the norm" in terms of hair color.

Homosexuality is perfectly "normal" behavior (non-statistical connotation and context), even if it is not "the norm" for human sexual expression (statistical reference).

By all means, celebrate differences. But celebrate grammar, vocabulary and textual context as well.

15. Love & Rockets.. No New Tale To Tell
No New Tale to Tell should be the anthem for all gay pride fests:

You cannot go against nature
Because when you do
Go against nature
It's part of nature too

Our little lives get complicated
It's a simple thing
Simple as a flower
And that's a complicated thing

No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell

AHHHH

My world is your world
People like to hear their names
I'm no exception
Please call my name
Call my name

No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell
No new tale to tell

AHHHH

When you're down
It's a long way up
When you're up
It's a long way down

It's all the same thing
No new tale to tell

Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 09:05 PM by wtmusic
it has to do with your ignorance of the meaning of the word "normal".

By at least one definition, you've just accused gays of being "unnatural", and having "observable abnormalities or deficiencies."

26. Homosexuality's been a part of the human race as long as the
human race has been around, as far as I know.

It's still here. Hasn't caused extinction, hasn't caused the whole population to turn gay either. Has it?

So I'm thinking it's a normal part of the human race.
