The Beatitudes: A Neo-Con Nightmare. (GRAPHIC HEAVY)
1. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

2. Blessed are the meek: for they shall posses the land.

3. Blessed are they who mourn: for they shall be comforted.

4. Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after justice: for they shall have their fill.

5. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

6. Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.

7. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

8. Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

8. I'm one too but
those are probably the most imporant words ever uttered by a human being.

Whatever you think of his "followers" Jesus was the real deal.

15. LOL! I like your graphic!
My b/f would get a laugh out of that, too - and he was raised Jewish!

:7

And, you're right, Jesus was a wonderful human being, whether one believes in His divinity or not. He still preached and lived by the most blessed creed.

But I'm not reformed, coz Jesus is on mah trailer hitch."

34. And next time a fundie confronts us with idiotic "facts," we can
just preface any and all of our remarks with:

"Jesus Christ on a trailer hitch!! Are you that stupid?!"

5. Speaker Thomas P (Tip) Oneill
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 11:16 AM by bottomofthehill
In the Speakers book Man of the House, he says the greatest political speach ever given was the Sermon on the Mount. He truly believed in its message. So should we.

and everything we should hold sacred for that matter.

10. This came about as a variety of things this morning.
Edited on Sat Aug-13-05 11:28 AM by Clark2008
I posted the Beatitudes on another post, which made me think about them, and I was also discussing how I was raised in the church with my b/f, who is a Jew turned agnostic.

We were discussing how people are so cruel and judgmental, particularly when it comes to love. People like my father who disowned me when I married an Arab back in the 90s. He has never even bothered to see his beautiful grandson, even though I've been divorced from his father for three years, now. All this, despite the fact that my parents raised me to believe that Jesus was love, all about love.

Its so ironic that the theo-cons hold so much stock in the Old Testament and rarely bother reading or quoting or living by the words of the man who made their very religion possible.

7. I've always loved the beatitudes
Even after leaving the christian faith. I especially love the fact that these so-called christians in this country ignore them, and live the opposite.

18. Didn't Carter...

Accept to massively fund "Islamofascists" just to bleed the USSR ? That's not much of a peacemaker move considering the repercussions of this 20 years after, but at least he did recognize the weakness of our economies because of it's dependence on oil.

And, he did try to bring the waring Israelis and Palestinians together, for what that was worth.

42. Jimmy Carter is not deserving of the title "peacemaker"
His administration funneled some ten million to the repressive Salvadorian regime, whose death squads murdered thousands of civilians (including Archbishop Romero and four American nuns).

Carter was simply one of the more "restrained" administrators of the Empire.

25. This is a True Understanding
Beautiful thread; it connects the Scripture to the real world that surrounds us, as religion is supposed to do. All true, too. You might also add the story about Jesus throwing the moneychangers out of the Temple, and relate it to Bush, Cheney, Halliburton, the entire Republican Party, etc. From Matthew 21:12-14, the story of throwing the "capitalists" out, and it ends, "It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves." Then, as a contrast, this sentence: "And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them" (and didn't even charge them a fee!).

The Spirit of God calls all people to the deeper meanings of things--but the oppressors are always the same few groups, and the same few sins.

40. The beatitudes are different in the...
...King George Version of the bible. It's been changed to blessed are the rich, for they shall buy their way into heaven; cursed are the poor for they suck tax money away from the rich; stupid are the merciful for they fritter away their time helping the undeserving while they could be working a second job to earn more wealth...etc.
