My day in Crawford
I'm back in Austin in one piece after a very long day. Was up last night baking cookies and brownies to take with me...then up early this morning to drive up before it got hot.

This morning I volunteered at the Peace House. It was fun. I met a couple of real nice ladies (one of whom asked for my ginger cookie recipe). Mostly I did clean up and I gotta say liberals rock...it may have been the cleanest rally ever. :)

Anyway, while I was sitting out in front of the Peace House the funniest thing happened. A UPS truck pulled up and a guy got out carrying a huge box. Someone in Delaware apparently shipped Cindy an 18 pounds box...of Godiva chocolate...at least that's what it said on the box. I want to meet this person...and get them to adopt me. There was much giggling about the box.

After that the DUers started calling and checking in. There were quite a few of us there...ginbarn, sonias, NoPasaran, Blue Collar, carmarian, Aquarius, movie_girl_99, GloriaSmith...I know I'm leaving people out...sorry.

I ended up shuttling to the rally with ginbarn...in a van driven by one of my very favorite Texas state reps...Lon Burnam. I met him at the redistricting subcommittee hearing in Dallas just over two years ago. He gave me a hug after my testimony. So it was kinda cool to step up in to the shuttle van and do a double take when I saw who was driving. He was also part of an organization selling t-shirts with "Military Recruiters Lie" on them. *snort*

The rally was fun...Lisa Rogers from the Therapy Sisters sang...I sang with her a couple of years back when I was in the Austin Women's Chorus. If you've never heard the Therapy Sisters...you should...go here:
http://www.thetherapysisters.com/

There were lots of speakers...military families and vets against the war. It was all touching and sad and you just wanted to hug everyone.

Then we caravaned out to Camp Casey. There were cops all over but we managed.

I got to hug Cindy for my Dad. She laughed a little bit when I told her my daddy had ordered me to "hug her neck". She mentioned liking my "Center of Attention" t-shirt too...said she kinda felt that way. I only got to talk to her for a second but she seemed to have such a quiet strength to her...and a bit of humor. :)

I walked up and down the row of crosses they've put up with the names of soldiers killed in Iraq on them. It was indescribable. It's something sacred and very sad.

When Cindy spoke today it was magic. She was on fire. Really gave George hell. The crowd was so fired up and there was such a spirit there...it's hard to put into words. If you can go to Crawford and experience it for yourself...do. You won't regret it.

Anyway, I'm wiped out and I'm gonna crash. Just wanted to check in and give everyone a little update on what all happened today from my pov.

Oh, one last little bit of amusement...the counter-protesters were pitiful. There weren't many of them. The ones at Camp Casey yelled during a moment of silence for the soldiers killed in Iraq. And it pissed me off to have to be a good liberal and not start anything. There was this idjit with a sign that said "Don't be Michael Moore's puppet" and it was all I could do not to walk over to him and say "It's better than having Dick Cheney's hand up your ass". But I was good. *sigh* ;)

I'm gonna crash. It was fun but I'm done.

3. Kewl...
you gotr a pic of Lon with the t-shirt. :)

That helicopter followed us to Camp Casey too. It circled in low right as Cindy started to speak but then flew off again. What was freaky...it felt like it was following me, Blue Collar, Aquarius and ginbarn when we were leaving. Kept circling around us for the longest time...even after we started the car and left it was there for a while. Very creepy. We must be a threat to national security. ;)

What a great report of a day in your life I'm sure you'll never ever forget! Can't imagine an 18lb box of Godiva chocolates!! OMG! Chocolate fondue anyone? LOL!! Yum!

Very proud of you for biting your tongue around the deluded little freeper group. Those people are so brainwashed/braindead nothing we say will penetrate anyways.

Thanks VelmaD! You did good when you could and that's all any of us can do!

38. won't be much to tell....
every day of the week, someone in my town stands in a visible area with others who may show up holding peace flags and signs, all organized by the local UFPJ chapter.

Even tho I'm in a very blue state the town I'm in can be pretty conservative because of all the money here, but we still get more well wishers than nay sayers.

70. Thanks, VelmaD! I am so sorry that I live so far away...
All I notice is that there is so much love, support and understanding on our side...Bush-supporers only hate, oppress, and smear. What a pitiful existence for these freepers.

I hope there is a rupture. It will take all those assholes off this planet and leave our planet to loving, caring, and peaceful people. The more I think about it, I feel that the concept of rupture was invented by the devil to capture the most evil, hateful, and veil people this planet has to offer.

72. The local news just said...
That up to 200 people are in Crawford protesting the war.

Pictures I have seen here an other sites tells me to question this number. For those that have been there, what is your estimate of the number of people there?

73. All I know...
...is that the caravan from the rally to the campsite (3 miles) took over 45 minutes. We passed by a handful of pro-Bush protesters by the side of the road--maybe 50, to be generous, scattered over a small area they called "the American zone." Just goes to show, support for this war is waning--even in Shrubya's back yard.

76. Here's my estimate
First, I'll say: two hundred? bullshit!!!

We caravaned out to Camp Casey and parked along Prairie Chapel Road. Looking at a map of the area, it looks like we occupied at least one mile when parked. I'm going to allocate 20 feet per vehicle so

5,280/20 = 264 vehicles

Of course, there were some places where cars were parked on both sides of the road, but I want my estimate to be on the low side.

How many people per vehicle? I was with one other person. There didn't seem to be many people driving alone; lots with three or four in their cars. So I think that we an use 2.5 people per car as a nice conservative number...

264 cars x 2.5 people/car = 660 people

Now, to that number should be added some other X number who weren't in the caravan but who rode the shuttle vans up to Camp Casey during the day. I have no way of estimating this number so I'll just make a SWAG and say it's equal to 50.

So that gives us something in the neighborhood of 710 people at Camp Casey during the rally at about 3 PM Saturday. I think this is a conservative estimate, the actual number could be higher---clearly 200 is not even in the ballpark.

78. Good estimate.
There were at least 700 people supporting Cindy, no less than that, but probably more. I estimated about 50 pro-war people in their little camp on the side of the road & the Iconclast estimated the same.

I posted a short summary of my road trip at this link:

81. Good analysis NoPasaran
I agree that 710 is low-balling it, but much more accurate than 200 to 300 hundred. I think the people that showed up at Tonkawa park were that many right at noon, but people kept pouring in, and then there were many that parked at the stadium and just followed us out to Camp Casey. Those people who want to delude themselves that this wasn't a huge rally are the same ones who are deluding themselves about us winning this war. We are winning nothing in Iraq.

77. GREAT!-ABC News reported Peace House mortgage is paid off
contributions over the last week or so have paid off the mortgage. The Peace House is there to stay.

They left that part of the story (last night) out of the on line version.

82. Yes there have been other good things come from Cindy's stand
And I'm sure she thinks it's wonderful too. The Crawford Peace House was created there to support peaceful events. Cindy has done a world of good to both bringing attention to stop the war movement and to the waging peace movement in Crawford. A permanent home for the Peace House is wonderful.

83. Is this tentative..
I mean, it seems interesting to me that a mortgage would get paid off before the protests were over... who knows what kind of legal or logistical support may be needed..

What if Cindy has to go camp out at the WH for months? What about Ann's cell phone bill or Cindy's or her travel expenses to keep spreading her message.. or what about flying out other military families?

86. Taking care of long term debt first is a good idea
paying off the mortgage means that the house will be there for years to come (even after W cuts out of town and moves back to a mansion in Houston) and remind people of who used to live there.

The other costs are much less prohibitive and easier to cover, IMHO.
