Do you have a friend or relative who is liberal
and even progressive but is a lout in all other respects? This is decidedly bothersome. You want to just hand them a Down with Shrub bumpersticker and then run!

4. It's frightening how intermingled Mormonism has become with Republicanism
Frightening to me anyway, since I have to live surrounded by them, hiding, always hiding...

14. Have you read "From Housewife to Heretic"
by Sonia Johnson?

She was an activist trying to get ERA passed and was excommunicated by the LDS for her activism. The book describes her getting involved and takes you through the excommunication process, including the kangaroo court she had to face.

3. oh yeah...my former business partner
i think there are people on both sides of the fence who hold strong views mainly to get attention and feel superior instead of out of true conviction.

6. I'm not sure this is appropriate for this post
but I've never felt comfortable with any -ism except humanism.
Once I grew up and began thinking for myself I never even participated in the 'pledge to the flag' at sporting events. For an odd reason that I couldn't explain to myself at the time, it just felt wrong. I wouldn't put my hand over my heart and recite those words. I looked at others who did so as...as...lemings, I guess. I don't mean to offend anyone--this is strictly my opinion only.

10. Same here...
My sophomore year of high school the entire school was called down to the auditorium for some event. When everyone rose for the pledge of allegiance I didn't stand up. I couldn't. I knew that 95% of the people reciting those words were only doing it because they were told to. Not because they meant it. I refused to take part in such hypocrisy.

A teacher was walking up and down the center aisle watching the students and when she saw me sitting she told me to get up. I said no and she called over the vice-principal who told me to get up for "his pledge of allegiance". When I said no again my best friend who was standing up next to me looked at me like I was nuts and told me to get up with a kind of look like "dude you're gonna be in trouble". But I just sat there with the three of them staring at me. Finally both teachers turned in the aisle put there hands on there chest and continued on reciting the words.

7. Rucky, right on
i think there are people on both sides of the fence who hold strong views mainly to get attention and feel superior instead of out of true conviction.

Absolutely, but I feel the other side is doing it more out of demented psychological reasons than for true conviction or perhaps they are just mentally lazy. Why? because I am conceited enough to think no one in their right mind would support a psychopath except those who are in just for the money, and that in itself is bad enough.

5. Not at all.
All of the liberals/progressives I know are nice people -- that's not to say perfect or without somewhat annoying personality quirks at times. However, all are well-meaning, thoughtful, kind-hearted people.

A co-worker of mine hates * but himself is such a womanizing, arrogant, asshole that it drives me insane. I cannot get along with him at all. In fact his personality is so inline with your average joe repug its almost terrifying.

11. there are crazies on both sides, but the policies are what matters.
the LW or RW should be judged on their goals , not the frailties of their supporters.

On goals and how they actually behave once in office. Mainly behavior in office, since many goals are lies.

crazies can gravitate to either party, because they dont think logically, or because they dont see reality -- only hallucinationas or delusions.

I have seen loons on both sides.
Most people, in fact, have flaws of some sort or other.

"no one is perfect"

the rock called "conglomerate" describes the personalities of most people. A contradictory mass of traits.
