Illegal immigrants won't work the fields now because of better paying
jobs. This is a classic of example of you reap what you sow. It should also be a wake up call to those who think the answer is shifting labor overseas because of lower cost.

Slim Pickings in Farm Labor Pool
# Tighter borders and construction jobs that pay better are at the root of a shortage of workers willing to toil in the Central Valley fields.

By Solomon Moore, Times Staff Writer

FRESNO — The nectarine came off the branch with a rustle of leaves and a snap of the stem. The flesh was soft and light, with a tangy aftertaste that was only slightly sour.

It was a few days from being perfectly ripe — and that, said Central Valley labor contractor Fred Garza, was a problem. It might have been too ripe to make the market in time.

"The harvest started getting away from us. We should have 25 men here, but we only have six," Garza said while standing in a nectarine orchard last month.

"I've lost two jobs this season because I couldn't get people — any people," said Garza, who generally employs about 2,500 men. This summer, he has only 1,500 workers. "And I'm one of the largest labor suppliers around here. If I'm having trouble, everybody's having trouble."

1. Kind of on topic here ...
I watched NBC last night by chance and saw a report on Punta Gorda, Florida, where Charley hit last year. They spent some time talking about the people who are being forced out by the housing boom - they'd lost their homes (trailers) and were living in government trailers that were going to be closing in six months. They can't afford to go to any other apartment units because the price has pretty much doubled. I'm pretty sure it was a city/county commissioner who said, PARAPHRASING here, "they need to leave. There's no room for them here." The reporter said, "that's cold." The guy said, "yes, but it's reality."

These are the people that serve the rich - what are the rich going to do when they can't be served?

4. so... the rally against illegal immigration is working and now people are
whining?

Perhaps our Mexican neighbors are just staying in Mexico where there are jobs to be had in the right areas, like the Yucatan, without facing the wretched poverty of the US and the slave-like conditions, not to mention high costs of living and discrimination...

Ya THINK?

5. How much does the job pay?
Maybe he should raise his slave wages or maybe he is just an ass nobody wants to work for.

7. They should have no problems filling those jobs with U.S. citizens.
As the Know Nothings say, the illegals are stealing jobs. So now that the illegals have left this line of work, there should be long lines of Americans ready to fill the positions.
