When the Watergate hearing started... |
|
what was the makeup of the House & Senate in terms of Democrats vs. Republicans?
It may not be as relevant as today, as back then they even had (gasp) liberal Republicans like Lowell Weicker who weren't afraid to forcefully criticize Nixon (Weicker actually won his seat by running as an anti-war Republican vs a pro-war Democrat)

|
I don't remember the exact makeup of the House and Senate but I think it was more balanced than what we have today.

2. I know the Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate... |

I think there were a lot more moderate Republicans back at that time. It seems like most of the Republicans in power today are just greedy and only care about their political gain.

5. Yes, although both parties were quite different from today |
|
For example, the McGovern-Hatfield Amendment of 1970, which would have cut off funding for the Vietnam War, was cosponsored by Democrat George McGovern and Republican Mark Hatfield. Can you imagine such a thing happening today?
