Wow !!! - Freeps Turning On Church Over Sheehan !!!
<snip>

Well, I walked out of church this morning over the Cindy Sheehan situation (VANITY)
Muself | 8/14/05 | Myself

Posted on 08/14/2005 9:17:15 AM PDT by Chi-townChief

I'll apologize in advance for this vanity post but I need to get this off my chest:

At our 10:30 a.m. mass this morning, our pastor was the celebrant. Today's Gospel was the story of Christ's meeting with the Canaanite woman and the eventual healing of her daughter. Our pastor then followed with his homily where he first related the plight of the Canaanite woman with a woman he knew who called him requesting prayers for an illness in her family which we could relate to since my wife and I are both contending with (minor, we hope) health issues.

The nest thing we know, the pastor is relating this to the "lady camped out in Texas asking for healing AND ACCOUNTABILITY" (the emphasis is my own). We sat there and listened through the sermon as he returned to the Sheehan story a few more times asking us to imagine an Iraqi woman who lost children in the same position.

Thankfully, it was pretty short and we stood for the Creed but then, immediately before the intercessions, the pastor returned to the topic.

This was too much for us so we turned and left, commenting to those around that we don't come to church to hear politics. I handed the usher my offering as we exited.

This is the first time something like this has happened in this church we have attended for the past twenty years or so and I feel pretty horrible about the whole thing.

Let me get this straight... the church of the Prince of Peace, was actually preaching peace, so this dude and fam got up and left because, they can't have any of that sort of heretical nonsense... Wah...

:wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf::wtf:

52. It must have been a more liberal denomination
Where the freeper felt safe he's never be confronted with the normal right wing politics in church that many churches allow.

And by talking on his way out he was trying to take others with him.

(Or this could have been a paid or Rove crony poster trying to implant the suggestion int other freepers minds. Rove loves to play tricks with the freerepublic people, I'm sure. He seems to have used a proxy to plant the first doubts about the CBS memos there, from the info that LA Times learned about the fr.com poster who first brought up the garbage about no typewriters with superscripts in those days--which turned out to be wrong.)

FUCK them.

I've been listening to politics in MY church for YEARS. I got told that I was going to hell because I would have voted for Kerry, had I been of age.

What this slime means is that he/she doesn't like hearing politics in chuch that they don't like.

Things look a little different from the other point of view, don't they, freeps?

Exactly why I don't go to church anymore.

64. You got to be kidding me
OMG my sides hurt I laughed so hard at this. So let me get this straight.

1. It's ok to tell folks they are going to hell if they vote for Kerry

2. It's ok for priest to preach against reproductive rights and incorporate that opinion into politics during a church sermon.

3.It's ok to preach against gay marriage in church and incorporate that opinion into politics during a church sermon.

My god what is not ok is to preach peace and compassion for others. By god that is not fine and dandy because that my friend is an liberal ideology.

These people are the fucking epitome of hypocrisy. They USED and ABUSED the teachings of christ in this last election and these dumb freeptards ate it up like candy. Damn, jesus was all about peace and compassion for your fellow man. These people are not true Christians and IMO they are worshiping Bush the idol. It just goes to show they will put politics over their so-called beloved religion. This folks is not about religion and it never was about religion. These people are sick, sick and god have mercy on their souls because they are blind. This is one of many reasons why religion and politics should not be mixed.

If Jesus came down from heaven these people would crucify him again.

The bozo, if he knew WTF he was talking about, should realize that churches are free to talk about stances on moral and social issues; the line is only drawn when pastors direct people to vote for a specific candidate or contribute to a specific party. I guess they don't like it much when it doesn't go to their advantage!!!

I lifted it from a FARKER who goes by the handle HBFARKER (I credit him in the properties of the image). Fark has some very creative people, from all ends of the spectrum. They really enjoy the competition to come up with the most clever images. I haven't checked them out lately, but I try to stop by every so often...it gives me hope for future generations, when I see that sort of creativity! http://www.fark.com/

14. This is a bogus post.
Lies and the lying liars that tell them. He says: "This was too much for us so we turned and left, commenting to those around that we don't come to church to hear politics. I handed the usher my offering as we exited."

OK, let's see. He is told who not to vote before every election -- people who are "pro choice." The word comes down and it's delivered at church. Where's this guy going to church? He's a liar if he says he's never heard politics there. It's politics on a regular basis before every election. He just doesn't like the consistency of the pro-life position adopted but not enunciated frequently enough: no abortion, no killing people (in pre-emptive wars, the death penalty, by fouling the environment with death causing toxins). He can't stand the truth. He can't tell it either.

My church though my preacher has only talked about politics only twice. Once on a fourth of July thing (how lucky we are and stuff like that) and once he mentioned why we have to fight and be left vs. right and not just work together for a better country for God. Other wise my preacher is pretty good.

We're talking Jesus here yeah? As i recall, Jesus was pretty politically active. He would gladly have stood in a ditch if it stopped an immoral war would he not?
You know:(warning, pontification about to commence)
seems to me that some people go to church or support the troops because it is socially acceptable and feels good and it's all so non threatening. Then, when things get serious, not fun, then these same people get all squirmy and uncomfortable. I think the nation as a whole needs to get all squirmy and uncomfortable beyond the comforting powers of Fox and CNN Weekly Reader News. Then we can get on with the business of being engaged in the future of our country and the planet.

A belief in an afterlife, and of a final day on which we will face our creator and explain what we did, and why we didn't do what we could have, should have...

And why the message of one they claim to believe was the messenger of The One, was ignored, even discarded for one of hate and death.

When 100,000 iraqi's will ask for what reason they were slaughtered, when they had done us no wrong.

And when the gaze of The One falls upon this man who claimed the injeel, the message Jesus(pbuh) brought, as his faith.. He will be asked to explain why his words and actions were contrary to that message.

On that day, there will be no "sound byte" answer, no politically expedient excuse.

He, and so many others will claim they were acting in the name of Jesus. When asked, Jesus will deny them by stating, "Be gone from here, I know you not".

This is in his own bible.

If only they truly believed what they claim, perhaps more of them would act like Jesus, in word and deed. Wouldn't this be a better world?

and isn't that what being "Christian" is all about?

43. Conservatives can't stand to face their own internal contradictions
If they truly believe that God created the earth, then they would lament the destruction of his creation through strip-mining, through the commercial exploitation of million-year-old forests, and the extinction of species of animals. If they truly believe that God created man in his own image, then they would lament Iraqi deaths in ABSOLUTELY EQUAL measure to American deaths, as God didn't create nations or governments. If they were true to their religious teachings, they wouldn't support wars of conquest in which tens of thousands of innocents lose their lives, just to get blind and unfounded vengeance because 3000 Americans lost theirs.

51. Exactly
God is above time and space and the Earth. He gave us this wonderful place to live and grow as soul's and experience life. We should want to take care of the planet and each other even if we don't like how some people live. It's not my place to judge anybody. Only God can do that. And also killing of innocent blood is one of the things God hates (one of the seven deadly sins). Bush is guilty of all of them.

85. Exactly!
They don't go to church to hear politics, at least not politics they don't agree with.
In fact it's politics that got most of them to go to church in the first place. As long as the preacher is towing the right wing line it's all good. When they try to put across a moral lesson based on real christian values, they walk out.

61. The actual story in question....
I think its actually very powerful. It's a good parable to share with the Christians I know that honestly seem pulled in two directions by Cindy.. by the heart that feels her pain and by the head that has been filled with rhetoric...

One day Jesus Christ went to the region of Tyre and Sidon. There came to Him a Canaanite woman of pagan faith, and she began to cry out loudly, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon."

Wishing to show His disciples the strength of the faith of this woman, Jesus Christ did not answer a word to her.

Then, the disciples began to beg Him saying, "Send her away, for she is crying after us."

But Jesus answered, "I am sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

But she came and knelt before Him saying, "Lord! Help me."

Jesus Christ said to her, "Let the children first be fed, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs." He said this because the Jews considered themselves the children of Abraham, children of God, and sons of the Kingdom of Heaven, and they looked upon the Gentiles as dogs. Therefore, the Saviour was intentionally addressing the Jews in this instance and equating a dog to this woman, wishing to show the Jews all the incorrectness and injustice of their attitude toward the pagans. Among the pagans, He found strong faith such as did not exist among the Jews. He called them "the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Moreover, by these words, the Saviour showed the woman that He must live and do His work first of all among the Jews as they believed in the true God. Most importantly, the Saviour saw the believing heart of this woman and rejoiced that in her there was an example to show all people what faith must be.

The woman humbly answered to this, "Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs." With these words the Canaanite woman demonstrated not only her great humility and consciousness that a pagan person could not be as close to God as those in the true faith, but conveyed by this her great faith that the merciful God extends mercy to all people.

Then, Jesus Christ said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire." And her daughter was healed instantly. Returning home, the woman found her daughter restored to health and peacefully lying in bed.

You did the right thing. Priests should not attempt to brainwash parishoners and they should stay out of politics. (Separation of Church and State, I believe is the term.)

Hey, I agree with you Virginia Queen. This separation of Church and State idea sounds interesting, please tell me more. Perhaps we can meet over coffee after the next Justice Sunday! Oh wait, I'll have to reschedule...I have to meet with the school board later that day to discuss whether creationism should be taught in public schools. When we do get a chance to meet, why don't we meet at the Ten Commandments statue outside the courthouse? How will be able to recognize each other? You'll be the one wearing your God Bless America shirt and I'll wear my ACLU shirt and we can discuss the true meaning of separation of Church and State. Oh wait...you meant separation of your Church from my state. Or is it separation of my church from your state? Funny how the two can't seem to co-exist in your world, isn't it. Yep. Hilarious.
