Since when does the VICE PRESIDENT ...
have the authority to order a nuclear strike? :wtf:

"The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons."

1. He doesn't, but Dubya's on vacation, so what the hey
Drawing up a contingency plan is probably different from ordering a nuclear strike, right?

2. The plan includes an air assault on Iran employing... nuclear weapons.
Well, we all knew * would be the end of the world....

We bomb them, they bomb us.

Thank you Bush.

3. Since when was Cheney the "vice" President?
Bush falls off his bike and drops his dog on its head, no way is Uncle Dick letting him near the nuclear football

4. He didn't order a stike, he ordered them to draw a plan.
It's like getting an estimate.

the full article (which doesn't seem to be available online) says:

"Vice President Cheney's office has specifically told the Pentagon that the military should be prepared for an attack on Iran in the immediate aftermath of 'another 9-11.' That's 'not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States.'"

It sounds as if he's already given the Pentagon the go-ahead in the event of an attack on the US. Bush's name isn't even mentioned ... and Iran doesn't even have to be involved in attacking us! :scared:

16. What he's doing is baiting the terrorists, whatever country they may
be from. If ANY terrorists strikes in the U.S., Cheney has already said we (he) will attack Iran - same principle they used to attack Iraq. This is very, very dangerous and taunting the enemy is just really stupid.

6. Presidential authority may be delegated.
If Bush put Cheney in charge of such things, he has the authority to do so.

I don't think "nuclear" authority should EVER be allowed to be delegated to anyone! Don't get me wrong, I don't trust Bush* at all ... but, generally speaking, the President should be the only person allowed to make nuclear decisions and that authority should not be delegated unless he's incapacitated or otherwise incapable of doing so.

10. I think that there are limits to that...
Because theoretically if the President were incapacitated he could delegate all of his authority to someone other than the Vice President and in the process, completely sidestep the constitution.

9. Ok, maybe I'm reading this whole thing out of context, but ...
Edited on Mon Aug-15-05 08:42 PM by Rude Horner
...in the little blurb that I read, they say they want a plan to respond to another 9/11 type attack. And that response is to attack Iran.

Um...do they know something we don't? Are they are just ASSUMING that the attack is going to come from Iran?

It's like saying "I think my house is going to be robbed, and if that happens, I'm going to kick the shit out of my neighbor because I don't like him."

Sounds like Iran better pray another 9/11 attack doesn't happen because they're going to be the ones to feel our wrath, as in Iraq taking the brunt of our blame for the first 9/11 attack.

btw - I think it's real scary to hear Dick Cheney start making plans about what we're going to do in response to another 9/11 attack. God, if you're listening, please stop this bastards cold heart from beating. Thank you.

Oh, and P.S. - I thought Bush was going to be the one to prevent another 9/11 attack. I mean, that is what he said during the election, right? Oh, I get it!! I see what he meant NOW! When he said that he was going to prevent another 9/11 attack, he literally meant that no more attacks would ever come on September 11th! September 12th, on the other hand - we're fucked.

Assholes :banghead:

the full article appeared in the print version, but not online - so we're only getting excerpts online.

But ... the American Conservative says:

"The Pentagon, acting under instructions from Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, has tasked the United States Strategic Command (STRATCOM) with drawing up a contingency plan to be employed in response to another 9/11-type terrorist attack on the United States. The plan includes a large-scale air assault on Iran employing both conventional and tactical nuclear weapons."

And other sites have another excerpt which says:

"Vice President Cheney's office has specifically told the Pentagon that the military should be prepared for an attack on Iran in the immediate aftermath of 'another 9-11.' That's 'not conditional on Iran actually being involved in the act of terrorism directed against the United States.'"
