I do not believe in the "God" of the Bible, although I love the idea of Jesus as a Master Teacher.

The post did not offend me, nor did its title. I read it as those who approve of the desecration of the crosses are hypocrites because they speak of believing in God and thump their Bibles over our collective heads, but their actions clearly show they have no respect for God's word and thus must not believe that God exists, else why would they provoke him by destroying a universal symbol of sacrifice?

That "universal symbol of sacrifice" is a christian symbol and it
should not have been used to represent dead soldiers who were not christian.

That is about as offensive and disrespectful of the dead as you can get.

It is NOT a universal symbol of sacrifice unless everybody in the universe is christian.

Well, that "word" is subject to MUCH interpretation now, isn't it? If their interpretation differs from yours, and theirs also says that they SHOULD disrespect other interpretations (as corruptions from Satan), then they very well DO believe in God and are acting just like they think God wants them to.

71. Anything Jesus would not endorse is not a "Christian" act
And certainly, mocking relatives of a dead person is on that list. I would think that any immoral thing would be a "non-Christian" act. That doesn't mean you as an atheist engage in "non-Christian" acts.

And considering the type of person who created that graphic probably thinks they follow Jesus's word and like to beat their chest about how "Christian" they are, they are only shaming the religion they supposedly have so much faith in. Hence it's not a "Christian" act.
It doesn't mean that people who don't believe in Christ can't have better values than these folks, or live the life that Jesus would want.

And if your name is Scott, or John, or Cindy, then it's a "non-Scott" or a "non-John" or a "non-Cindy" act.

And before you think otherwise, I am an agnostic/with Calvinist leanings who has had debates with many rabid born-agains about how an atheist, or a Jew, or a Muslim who followed the teachings of Christ and lived a good life could burn in hell simply because they didn't pray to him or go to his church. I happen to think you can lead a "Christian" life, and not be a practicing Christian or even think he existed. Most of these scum in freeper land would spit on Jesus if they ever saw him. After all, he was the first liberal.

93. What's a true Christian?
How do you determine whether someone really is a Christian? I mean, if it's that simple, why don't you just go visit churches from the umpteen hundred sects in existence today and straighten them all out as to what a true Christian is? After all, they have some pretty significant disagreements about faith vs. works, baptism, communion, salvation, etc., etc., etc.

What I object to is the automatic assumption that if someone does something bad, they obviously AREN'T a Christian. Sez who?

89. Benefit of the doubt
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 01:43 PM by YankeyMCC
When I first saw this post I felt again that I was being reminded I'm not part of the "acceptable club" so to speak. I'm an atheist and therefore I must be capable of the same sort of insensitivity and amorality.

However, I give the poster the benefit of the doubt in that I suspect they meant no specific offense to atheists and only meant either one or both of the following:

- These people are hypocrites for claiming to believe in god and still act this way
- These people don't believe in the god the original poster does or at least don't interpret the teachings of god in the same way

The OP might not have set out to offend and merely point out the hypocrisy or bad theology of the freetards but the problem is both of these things have an underlying assumption that you must believe in god to be moral or at least the god the god as imagined by the original poster.

But it just goes to show the sort of insidiousness and subtlety of prejudice and bigotry that is so ingrained in this heavily religious community. The original statement clearly indites anyone who does not believe in god and no one (at least no theists) even those who do not hold active easy to spot biases against atheists don't even notice it, perhaps not even the original poster. But we - at least this atheist and apparently a few others who've posted in response - do feel the offense.

100. "the sort of insidiousness and subtlety of prejudice and bigotry "
I had a great-uncle who used to refer to any kind of negotiations as "Jewing", as in "Don't let that car lot Jew you down on the value of your trade-in". He also used to refer to peope getting "Chinese-eyed" when they were stoned or drunk, and doing a "ring and run" (i.e., ringing the doorbell and running away) was called "n***** knocking". I don't think he ever thought about any of these phrases for more than five minutes total in his entire life. We made excuses for him because he was elderly and he was family. I believed then, and I continue to believe, that this was a mistake. It is never too late to become sensitive to the feelings of others and no one is too old to think about what they're saying.

15. You know what? It's okay.
These a-holes are showing the world what sick, heartless, bastards they really are. They can no longer hide behind the guise of "supporting the troops" and "patriotism". It is now plainly obvious to the blindest of sheeple what kind of people they've been supporting.

Freeper types like this are only chasing the fence sitters and moderates over to our side. What slightly rational mind would want to be associated with the the type of person who photoshopped that picture? Way to win '06 for us, freeps.

bastards they are when they put up that site "We're Not Sorry" to counter the "We're Sorry" site? That was proof enough for me.

That site was like one of their pro-war rallies. 10 supporters, and 50 anti-war people gawking in morbid fascination.

i can see the comparison. :eyes:

I dont think its asinine.

I consider their "crosses" to be the same as terrorists hanging the dead bodies of Americans from a bridge.

Just as we would fight and die to get to those bodies to cut them down. I would risk jail to cut those disgusting displays down.

40. "Nazi=socialist"?
Edited on Tue Aug-16-05 10:32 AM by deutsey
I really wish these idiots would bother learning history, especially since their heritage is fascism (these goons would have all been cheering wildly for Hitler in the '30s).

I had to disabuse a conservative friend of mine of the notion that the Nazis were socialists. He was absolutely certain that they were...until I showed him the overwhelming historical evidence of the far-right origins of Nazism and fascism.

Interestingly, while that happened a while ago, I learned that recently he has torn down his "Bush/Cheney" sticker from his cubicle and no longer supports the junta. I like to think I planted a seed that's finally bearing fruit.

19. Remember the fake controversy over Move On's ad contest?
For those of you who don't remember it, Move On sponsored an ad contest and two of the submissions equated the modern Republican party with the National Socialist party in Germany from the 1930s and 1940s. Okay, they basically called President Bush and his thieving cabal a bunch of Nazis.

Keep in mind that Move On did not produce these ads, but they were submitted to an online contest that Move On was running. However, that didn't stop the right wing shouters on radio, cable and the networks from working themselves up into their highest fake dudgeon about how scandalous it was that Move On was calling our great, popular war-time president the latter-day incarnation of Hitler.

Democrats were buttonholed on program after program, denounced day in and day out for not distancing themselves from Move On, and the entirety of their work was called into question.

I agree that this photo caption crapola is in the worst possible taste, and exposes Freeps for the mean-hearted little people that they are. But on top of that, I'd really like to hear Republicans questioned about whether they support Free Republic, and I'd like to see a little broad-brush tarring of the Right Wing Hate Machine that produces this sort of garbage without any repercussion to right wing politicians.

44. What was the funniest part of that is that
DRUDGE thought one of those Nazi works was one of MINE, from Takebackthemedia.com - I DID do one that compared Bush and Hitler TWO YEARS before that and it was wildly popular, millions downloaded it for a good laugh (the music was Spike Jones) and it had an actual message in that it informed folks of the Prescott Bush Nazi Steel sales with their bank that was taken away from them by Congress..

The germans especially loved it..

My entry was called ARMY OF ONE and took Bush to task in the MoveOn.org contest and was chosen as one of 14 entries at the top of over 1500 entries..

So when I went on the Joe Scarborough show I was fully expecting to be attacked by him for making one of the Nazi entries, they all had it completely wrong.. instead Joe the Scar kissed my butt the whole show, as he knew that if he said one negative thing to me I was going to SLAM him with, "WHat's the deal Joe, don't you support the troops?"

It was a lot of fun.. I cherish the video and the experience..

I tell you, they are out of ideas. They are desperate and have to resort to their own meanness as some sort of face-saving defense. It's pathetic.
