Elections Officials Complain Of Pressure From Company

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Officials at some Ohio county elections boards say people acting on behalf of a company that makes voting machines have improperly pressured them to buy the company's products.

Democrats and Republicans who sit on the local boards say representatives of Diebold Incorporated have offered donations to the parties.

The offers came right around the time the boards were choosing between machines made by Diebold and its competitor, Election Systems and Software Incorporated.

Nebraska-based E-S-and-S prompted a warning from the Ohio Ethics Commission to elections officials when it took some of those officials to a concert in 2003.
