Also, see the documentary on Chomsky with the same name.

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media.

On edit: Forgot to mention that one half of the team that did this film also produced The Corporation.

11. Definitely one of the best I've ever seen
Saw it when it came out at Rochester, NY's Little Theater. A wonderful little arts/progressive movie house.

Something else I forgot to mention. The documentary can be downloaded from http://www.chomskytorrents.org

It's a great place to start.

On Edit: "Manufacturing Consent" may be the correct title.

6. Language and Thought
Start with what he has written in his field of study to get a good sense of his style, then move to MC, etc.

13. Totally agree..
Start with linguistics.. and then move on. I think to truly get what genius Chomsky can be at times, linguistics is the root.

12. Don't start with a book. Start with videos
like Power and Terror, which we have right now from Netflix, or Manufacturing Consent.

18. he's got some good stuff, mentioned above BUT
ignore his efforts to describe computer -human verbal interfacing and understanding of human conversations or commands. His theories were way off base and set back that science for a good ten years.

It wasn't until current practices started up that speech recognition and oral commands began making an impact.

I understand that the latest generation versions are incredibly sophisticated, measuring content, even dealing with puns.

"Your ewe and you're you, are you? U are for unusual?" can actually be recognized and dealt with.

19. Suggestions
"Manufacturing Consent" is the classic. The film of the same name is a brilliant introduction to Chomsky's ideas and I would recommend that to the casual reader. Similarly, the more recent film, "Rebel Without a Pause" is a good primer.

Also, consider listening to recordings of his lectures. His debate with Richard Perle (where Chomsky demolishes the "intellecutal" darling of the neocon right) is required listening IMO.
