What would be a good movie?
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 06:39 PM by thrift_store_angel
Ok so for the fair booth our central committee wants to have a tv with a movie playing to attract visitors. They suggested fahrenheit 9/11 but I think this might be a little dated (in the sense that it has been discussed to death) and I think since people DO generally know what the movie is and what it is about it might attract more people who want to stop by and scream at us than people who are genuinely interested.

:thumbsup:Can anyone suggest a good movie that would be appropriate for a fair-type atmosphere (a lot of children running around) and would not go over too horribly in a semi-conservative area? I know that kind of limits things, but I am looking for something that will actually make people think, not just insight the rednecks.

13. Subtitle "The Whole Truth About the Iraq War"
Excellent, I highly recommend it. If not that, "The Hunting of the President."

2. How about "Roger and Me"?
Ok ,it's Moore's first film and it came out several years ago. But I actually think it's just as pertinent now.

4. The End of Suburbia
If you've got 78-minutes.

http://www.endofsuburbia.com/

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?

5. "Bush's Brain" about Karl Rove
... or maybe the DVD with Gary Lakoff that basically summarizes his "Don't Think of an Elephant." I think it's called something like "How Democrats and Progressives Can Win" ... here's the link to it on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002YXYY8/qid=1124323947/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-7080085-7028159?v=glance&s=dvd

10. I was thinking about "Bush's Brain".
I haven't seen it yet though (I just don't have the patience to sit in front of a tv screen, I would rather sit in front of a computer screen LOL)

I may have to look into that more.

I will look at that other one too.

6. don't know if this is possible
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 07:14 PM by MissWaverly
but would it be possible to show a clip from the Conyers Judiciary Committe hearing on the Downing Street memo that was held (June 16th?), he had only 4 witnesses, Joseph Wilson
(Plamegate), Cindy Sheehan (Gold Star mothers), Ray McGovern (CIA description of Cheney's activities before the invasion) & John Bonifaz

Each one had a very basic presentation that summarized the March to
War, you could replay each 1, they're not long and I think they
were very well presented, and powerful statements, I don't think that
when people stop by on their way to get a hotdog that they will stay
for a movie but they might want to stop for 5 minutes

8. Go to this site...
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/view/

There are a lot of timely issues covered by these programs - not politically incendiary and relevant to everyone.

You can view them streaming online, then if you find one (or more) that is what you are looking for, you can order it from PBS (simple as going to the top of the screen and clicking on "Shop PBS").

I would suggest starting with reviewing some of the following:

"The Other Drug War" - Covers the rising cost of prescription drugs.

"Tax Me If You Can" - How corporations are now coasting on the backs of average taxpayers.

"Secret History of the Credit Card" - Explains the inner workings of credit card companies.

"Truth, War, and Consequences" - Iraq

"Is Wal-Mart good for America" - Discusses Wal-Marts business practices and how they affect America.

One I really liked, but may not be good for an environment with young children is "Private Warriors" the impact that mercenaries (and outsourced support services) are having in Iraq and on US troops.

I hope you find this helpful.

12. The freeps around here......
apparently aren't too smart. LOL They have done this a few times before, no one notices, no one cares. Besides in this area "Republican Party Turns Democrats In For Showing Movie" would probably not bode too well for them. LOL There are too many swing voters.

11. The Oxbow Incident
B&W cowboy morality play about vigilantiism. John Ford, I think. Great movie.

Mr. Smith Goes To Washington

Catch-22

All The President's Men

In general, maybe a movie that has a long, respected and shared history than something more recent.

14. Hijacking Castrophe
You can see it online for free at http://www.informationclearinghouse.info Either that or Greg Palast's Iraq segment on his website or "The Bush Family Fortunes" also at the info site. Or "Control Room". That plays on the Sundance Channel a lot and will be on later this evening I think.
