Intrepid Alaskans stand vigil in the rain (photos)
Last night's vigil in Anchorage was attended by about 120 people in steady rain. There were many honks of support and thumbs-up from passing motorists. I only saw one middle finger. Here are a few photos...

1. What's the statue of the rifle-toting soldier commemorating?
I tend to be repelled by such statuary.

2. hmmm
I think that's a memorial to the soldiers that died defending Attu island from the japanese in WWII. Most people, certain I among them prior to moving to Alaska, don't know that Japan actually occupied American soil in WWII (Attu is an island way out on the end of the Aleutian chain).

I never bothered to read the plaque. Were you at the vigil, Ironman?

9. You're right.
That's where my dad was stationed in WWII. (Strange place for a young man from Tucson.) He has some very interesting photos from Attu.

4. Oh, you know, it's just your standard war memorial
for Alaska's dead soldiers. I never fail to miss the irony that we hold our peace demonstrations and vigils at this particular spot. In a way, it seems kind of appropriate.
