Anti-Sheehan commercial coming to CNN and Fox News
She reopened debate about war, and, boy, is she hearing about it
Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer

Thursday, August 18, 2005

snip...
Whether one supports Sheehan's position or not, she put the war back on the front pages in the middle of August and brought the war home to suburbia in a way other antiwar organizers hadn't been able to do.

"Whenever people have talked about the war, they've talked about body counts, and after a while, people have grown numb to that," said Joseph Tuman, professor of political communications at San Francisco State University. "There's always been a real struggle in this country over the questions, 'Should we be in Iraq?' and 'How long should we be there?'

"She has made it OK to have these conversations, as they're now about her, " Tuman said. "She's given people a way to talk about the war again."

snip...
As Sheehan supporters gathered at vigils Wednesday, Deborah Johns of Roseville was in Sacramento filming an anti-Sheehan commercial.

snip...
Republican strategist Sal Russo produced the ad, and a spokesman for his consulting firm expects it to begin airing on CNN and Fox News within a week. And Johns will lead a caravan, dubbed "You Don't Speak for Me, Cindy," that departs San Francisco on Monday for Crawford. That effort is organized by talk- show host Melanie Morgan of San Francisco's KSFO-AM.

or will they be locked out, while the Fascists are free to spread their messages of hatred and fight-to-the-death.

7. Yeah, really ... Once CNN and Faux have aired the anti-Cindy ads
haven't they set a precedent and doesn't this make it easier for MoveOn to insist that they air pro-Cindy spots? I don't expect Faux to let anything anti-Chimp on their airwaves, but if CNN is trying to be TRULY fair, they should sell MoveOn time.

31. If only Goebles had FAX and CNN!
What immorality! These networks are cogs in the NeoCon Death Cult machine not dissimilar to the Nazi party, the SS and all their sympathizers. The result of their collective daily actions is death, destruction and misery on a massive scale. Sal Russo the Republican adviser in Calif is a lieutenant in the storm tropper brigade eager to please his overlords and line his own pockets with the blood stained war profits, as are CNN and FOX. I suppose it is a sign that revenue from regular advertising for products that people aren't buying, is running low and the temptation to air immoral attacks on American citizens is too great! Have they no shame? Apparently, not.

Where are the church leaders? Why are they not condemming and ex-communicating these sinners? Why don't the religious leaders remind their flock of the Ten Commandments - especially the one that says "Thou Shall Not Kill!" Moses did not carry down with him from the mountain top, a stack of fine print, thou shall not kill, except for wars of conquest, occupation, economic domination, genocide, lying to justify a war that casues the death of innocent, young idealisic people who are mislead into believing that if they go to war in a foreign land it is for a "Noble Cause."

It is as sickening as anything I can immagine. I cannot think of anything more immoral than starting a war that results in the death of your own young people and untold numbers of people in foreign lands.

Cindy Sheehan is a hero, even to the supporters of the NeoCons who know not what they do. If anything she is more their saviour from their self-destructive beliefs and behaviors, than their nemisis. No wonder they are trying to discredit her and shut her up. No one likes to have someone else hold up a mirror that shows our worts and blemishes. We would rather try to kill the messanger than look at the truth about ourselves.

Oh, Lord, deliver us from this evil!

Remember all of the free airtime CNN and MSNBC (I don't watch FOX, but I'm sure they were on board) gave to the Swift Boat Liar ads?

Rest assured that Matthews, Blitzer et al will air this ad OVER and OVER under the guise of having their pundits comment on it. The turds who made it know they'll never have to shell out a dime to have it aired - CNN and MSNBC will make sure it has all the free airtime they can cram into their silly little "news" shows (at least, as long as they can break away from Aruba and killer shark stories).

Mo'fo's.

These repubs are just twisting words around or just making shit up again. UGH !!!!! This pisses me off to no END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE HAS NEVER SAID THAT SHE DOESN'T SUPPORT THE TROOPS! ALL SHE WANTS IS THE PRESIDENT TO TELL HER WHY HER SON HAD TO DIE!!!! GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

She has been orchestrating these attacks since day one. If the the RW attack machine's justification to attack Cindy Sheehan is that "people should know who she's aligning herself with", then it's time for the same from Melanie Morgan.

Melanie Morgan has a microphone with her radio show. Her targeted efforts are gaining her publicity, and money.

EXPOSE Melanie Morgan.

Cindy really has these people running scared. She is in a position to wake more people up to the reality around them, and the neocons are terrified beyond anything they have ever experienced. She needs our help and support now more than ever. Any chance we could put together a commercial of our own to run against the hate adds? I would donate time, expertise in video production, or money in a heartbeat.

Edited on Thu Aug-18-05 12:51 PM by PA Democrat
CNN made a big attempt to smear Cindy Sheehan with accusations of receiving funding from "far left" and "radical left" organizations. Will they look into the source of funding for pro-war ads? Or is it only the pro-peace movement which they find so distasteful?

16. this should open up counter-ads supporting Sheehan's views
Left organizations should fund raise and put out opposing ads, this is wonderful, the more the right wingers raise the profile of this issue the better.

Americans are getting progressively sicker of the Iraq war and this only reinforces their attention and doubts.

This might turn into an avalanche that the republicans will not be able to do anything about.

28. just what I was thinking
I learned long ago from my wise FDR voting grandma, that if you surround yourself with hateful people, it makes you angry as well, and sick to boot. Let them get filled with hatred against the truth, let them smear, let them think they have the answers. Then years down the road, when they visit their doctors complaining of ulcers, high BP, and other assorted illnesses, they can pay for all that medicine they will need.

Im slowly learning to not let people like this get to me, and believe me it isnt easy. Some people have that gift of letting things roll off of their backs, I see it here all the time. Hopefully it will continue to rub off on those of us that get so MAD

Peace.

I disagree with the Rove Republican machine having lost a sense of decency, because they never had any to begin with. Sociopaths don't, and Rove is a sociopath.

86. It's a specific reference to a historical event. Joseph Welch, attorney
for the Army, single handedly helped bring down the McCarthyism era during an exchange with Joe McCarthy during televised Senate hearings, during which McCarthy smeared Welch's associate with his former membership in a Communist affiliated organization. Joe McCarthy, another, like Roveco, who never really had a sense of decency.

Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?

If Kerry would have, the very next day, simply called that bunch liars, and made the connection to their "agenda" (something the right does all the time), the SB liars would have been yesterday's news by the end of the week. I think it would have been a dismal failure had Kerry responded forcefully and indignantly. He didn't. They won. But, they won because of the poor response, not because the smear was impossible to diminish.

50. Counter with, "Cindy speaks for me" ad
The ad should be full of military vets, military families, and GSFfP members. The ad should look like this:

Man steps forward: I'm John Doe, and my son was killed in Iraq. Cindy speaks for me.

Woman steps forward: I'm Jane Doe, and my daughter is serving in Iraq. Cindy speaks for me.

Man steps forward: I'm Joe Doe, and I served in Iraq/Vietnam (which ever war he served in). Cindy speaks for me.

Some else steps forward: I'm Jack Doe, and all of us are military families (room or field is full of people). Cindy speaks for all of us, and thousands more.

The media & the rw (okay, I know they are one & the same) have been painting a picture that Cindy is the *only* member of a military family that opposes this war. I have been watching the news reports and I cannot remember the last time that it has been mentioned that she is the co-founder of GSFfP. Never is it mentioned any longer that there are Veterans for Peace standing with her in Crawford. This is NOT an accident. This is also why we see all of these pro-war military family members propped up to make it look as though Cindy is the lone dissenting voice from within the military network.

52. more links re: Deborah Johns
Supporters of U.S. Involvement in Iraq Plan Caravan to Texas

The anti-war protest by a Vacaville mother outside the president's Texas ranch is galvanizing some who support the country's continued involvement in Iraq. One of those is a serviceman's mother who feels now more than ever the country must stand strong behind the troops.

Roseville resident Deborah Johns' son William is a Marine stationed in Iraq. She sympathizes with Cindy Sheehan, the anti-war protester who lost her son to enemy fire 16 months ago. However, Johns believes a pull-out now would negate what troops are fighting for in Iraq. She takes exception to Sheehan's protest and plans to do something about it.

"It absolutely has mushroomed, but that's our liberal media," said Johns. "They continue to like to hear the negative and not the positive that's going on." Johns is organizing what could be hundreds of others to participate in a caravan leaving San Francisco on Monday. The caravan is destined for Crawford, Texas, in a gesture of support for President George W. Bush.

Johns believes it's important to demonstrate her support for the course Bush has chosen. "If God took my son and called him home, I would continue to stand behind our military men and women and I would continue to support our president of the United States," she said.

Sheehan Becomes Target For Conservatives

snip...
Not far from Vacaville, Deborah Johns is dropping everything to travel to Crawford next week. But she's going to speak out against Cindy Sheehan, who Johns says is aiding the enemy.

Deborah Johns, Elk Grove resident: "I believe it continues to give the insurgents the will to fight against our military men and women instead of thinking 'hey we're going to pull out of there like Somalia.'"

The mother of a marine who has served in Iraq has produced a TV ad for the conservative group calling Sheehan the "heroine of the blame America first crowd."

53. link re: Melanie Morgan
Vacaville mom's protest spreads to Marin, rest of U.S.

snip...
Greenbrae's Melanie Morgan, a conservative radio host with KSFO, said she plans to fly to Texas next week and join a caravan of Bay Area people who are driving there to stand up for Bush and the Iraq war. Morgan said that, in the spirit of civic dialogue, she was glad to hear Marin residents participated in last night's vigils even though she doesn't agree with their opinion.

"It doesn't represent the rest of this country," Morgan said. "And I say that with great love to my neighbors."

snip...
Morgan said she is speaking up for millions of Americans who, although silent, remain committed to Bush and his policy in Iraq. Morgan said Sheehan and her supporters have every right to speak their minds, but so do people who disagree with them.

"The things she says undermine what's going on in Iraq and embolden the terrorists," Morgan said.

"although silent"?

She's kidding, right? Silent? And who is it that gets in the faces of peace vigil participants? Who is it that destroys the bumperstickers and signs of whom they disagree/ Who is it that runs liberals off the road?

Oh... that's right... the buchbots are so persecuted... how silly of me to forget. :eyes:

I'm sorry, I'm obviously not a brain surgeon here because I can't figure out how flying to Texas makes you part of a caravan.

55. Well, this is going to backfire in a big way.
Bring it on, cheerleaders of the 'war'. Beating the Schiavo tragedy into the ground worked out so well for you in terms of public opinion, I'm certain this will have much the same effect. Bring it on. Do. Film grieving parents of dead soldiers parroting the administrations lies about "noble causes." You will inspire nothing but pity for their emotional blindness and rage for your own opportunism. Opinion polls registering approval in the single digits? You're about to become intimately familiar with them.

56. It is amout smearing our soldiers that are fighting for their lives

As they are over there, fighting for freedom (is that the noble cause?) and death staring at them everyday, the message that people like this are saying to our soldiers is:

This is the way right wingers treat your mothers.

We have to turn this on them.

it's going to be the WOMEN who start the fighting! The MOTHERS! The mothers of dead children, vs. the mothers of LIVE children, mothers of privilege with an agenda.

FINE!!!!!

Let's show her how many people can put their boots on the ground in Crawford in support of Cindy! Now THIS is a "BRING 'EM ON!" moment.

72. I'm trying to think of DU-approved names to describe Melanie.
Is it okay to say.. ummmm.. that Melanie can.. oh never mind.

All I know is that suddenly we are living in a country where the division has gotten SO UGLY that I fear WE are on the verge of civil war. Bush was a divider. The m.f. stole both elections and is rubbing it in our faces... his minions are following suit in their brazen disregard for anyone that gets in their way. I fear for our country, the ultra right wing angry-crazies are emboldened and now Cindy is their target. Could any of us imagine that they would attack a Gold Star Mom so viciously? What is wrong with America?

leadership is out of step with the electorate. The longer it goes on, the worse it gets and a revolution of one sort or another does become inevitable. When? Who can say.

75. Do you know what I find interesting about this bus tour of theirs?
They have to plan for 3+ weeks and bankroll it to the tune of who knows how many $$$ in order to get what, 2-3 busloads of bush supporters there?

Compare that with the spontaneous outpouring of support for Cindy's message of peace. I was in Crawford last Saturday, and there were easily 10-12 busloads worth of people there supporting peace. That's less than one week after the protest started.

They're really quite pathetic when you think about it. They're also scared shitless.

It's no wonder MSM is covering "the controversy" since they're paying Melanie Morgan to go to Crawford and stir it up...

Operation Mockingbird is still in effect, folks, and that "mighty Wurlitzer" still plays the tune that Big Money pays it to.

87. Good! I believe the phrase
if you give them enough rope... fits here perfectly. This administration is famous for doing the same thing over and over and over. When are they going to figure out that this is not another politican but a grieving mother. Everyone from O'Reilly to Limbaugh has been back pedaling and lying about things that they were caught on tape saying. I just saw that the NYT printed a retraction after they accused O'Lielly of calling Cindy treasonous. O'Lielly demanded the retraction. Well I happened to see that show and O'Lielly is full of shit, not only did he say it but he ended his rant with the word treasonous hanging in the air. I know C&L is sending the video to the NYT and we'll see if the librul media retracts the retraction...
