Jefferson's Vendetta: The Pursuit of Aaron Burr and the Judiciary
Joseph Wheelan

Joseph Wheelan writes in his new book, "Jefferson's Vendetta: The Pursuit of Aaron Burr and the Judiciary," that Aaron Burr was a naturally gifted orator and politician who made Thomas Jefferson feel threatened. The author contends that this was the reason that Mr. Jefferson was intent on destroying the political career of Aaron Burr. When Mr. Burr's potential involvement in a land-holdings plot was revealed, Thomas Jefferson saw this as an opportunity to expose Aaron Burr in the Supreme Court treason trial presided over by Chief Justice John Marshall.

Joseph Wheelan worked as an editor and reporter for the Associated Press and the Casper Star-Tribune for twenty-six years and the author of "Jefferson's War."

23. Salt: A World History - Mark Kurlansky

Salt: A World History
Mark Kurlansky

The White House announced this week that President Bush is reading Mark Kurlansky's "Salt: A World History" during his summer vacation in Crawford Texas. Mr. Kurlansky discussed this book at Politics & Prose Bookstore in Washington, DC, when it was first published in 2002. According to Mr. Kurlansky’s research, the story of salt encompasses fields as dissimilar as engineering, religion and food. Salt had been considered so valuable that it served as currency until modern geology revealed its prevalence. Mr. Kurlansky contends that "the only rock we eat" has shaped civilizations. The demand for it led to the creation of major world trade routes. In the United States, it was a factor in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Mahatma Gandhi's salt march in 1930 instigated the overthrow of British rule in India. In addition, salt has influenced the history of foods like cheese, sauerkraut and olives. Included in the book are forty recipes.

Mark Kurlansky has written articles for The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s, The International Herald Tribune and Partisan Review. He is the author of "1968: The Year That Rocked the World," "Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World," "The Basque History of the World," "A Continent of Islands: Searching for the Caribbean Destiny," and "The Chosen Few: The Resurrection of European Jewry."

28. Witness to the Promised Land: Observations on Congress and the ...
Sunday 11PM

John G. Stewart,
Witness to the Promised Land: Observations on Congress and the Presidency from the Pages of Christianity & Crisis

Book Description
A collection of essays written by John G. Stewart in Christianity & Crisis, the respected journal of Christian opinion that was founded in 1941 by Reinhold Niebuhr. The magazine (C&C) achieved a level of influence, far exceeding its small circulation, and became a forum for important writers of the time. For half a century C&C commanded great respect in left-liberal circles, both religious and secular. Notable writers, including Protestant, Catholic and Jewish leaders and laity, explored changing ideas about religion and society, and contemplated the implications of Christian faith on modern society. Stewart wrote a series of reports from Washington during the 1960s while working with senator/V.P. Humphrey. With keen eye and precise prose, Stewart offered an insider view of how civil rights legislation was being crafted, advanced or thwarted by different factions. He gave readers close-up views of the major actors and detractors of the day, and described in detail the complex procedures and personalities of the senate. In this volume, Stewart presents the original columns, and offers short current commentaries. Witness to the Promised Land is a revealing and insightful account of the cultural and social workings of American Democracy and holds an astounding relevance to our time.

About the Author
John G. Stewart worked with Hubert H. Humphrey during many of the key legislative battles of the 1960s and, for a time, served as communications director of the Democratic National Committee. His broad experience in government includes assignments with the U.S. Senate, the Tennessee Valley Authority and NASA and as founding director of the Institute of Public Administration in Tbilisi, Republic of Georgia. He presently is a partner in the consulting firm of Stewart, Wright & Associates, LLC in Knoxville, TN and a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He is an active member of the United Church of Christ.

29. Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert's Peak - Kenneth Deffeyes
On Monday, August 22 at 12:00 am

Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert's Peak
Kenneth Deffeyes

Geologist, author, and Princeton University professor Kenneth Deffeyes writes that world oil production is no longer increasing in his new book, "Beyond Oil: The View From Hubbert's Peak." The title of the book comes from petroleum geologist M. King Hubbert, who formulated that the world's oil production would reach its peak in 2000 and begin to decline rapidly until the global fossil fuel supplies went dry. Mr. Deffeyes believes that the world's oil production would peak at the close of 2005 and that the eventual absence of fossil fuels would have a devastating and potentially catastrophic effect on world economies. The book also lists the potential replacement fossil fuel energy sources and the ways in which they can be utilized effectively.

Kenneth Deffeyes is a geologist and professor emeritus at Princeton University. He is also the author of "Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage."

42. In the past, they have had great guests.
Recently, I've noticed a change favoring conservative authors and guests, Washington Journal has been hard to watch for weeks.

I've also contacted them several times and hope our emails will not be ignored. On cable, CSPAN is still the best - I'm addicted to it along with FSTV, LINK and PBS.

Democracy Now is one of the best independent news sources for those with DISH TV. Amy Goodman is an incredible journalist, imo.
