School District Inspector General Fired.

The first independent inspector general in the history of the Miami-Dade school system was dismissed Wednesday when the School Board refused to renew his expiring contract.

Board members said Herbert Cousins, a retired FBI agent hired as the inspector general in 2003, completed too few investigations and uncovered too little waste and corruption.

Cousins, however, said district leaders conspired to eliminate him in order to protect themselves from scrutiny.

Prosecutors have credited Cousins with playing a leading role in two recent cases: the arrests of 22 district employees charged in a prescription painkiller drug ring and the arrest of a longtime Palmetto Senior High employee charged with peddling worthless continuing-education credits that more than 100 teachers used to renew their licenses.
