SHOULD THEY REINSTITUTE THE DRAFT????
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 10:56 PM by growlypants
I think they should. It's not fair that the rich kids don't have to fight this war that their parents so vehemently support. I believe in the old adage "Put your money where your mouth is." There is NO WAY these rich repugs (whom I have to deal with EVERYDAY at work) will send their kid. They want everyone ELSE to fight THEIR battle. S

1. Even with a draft, the rich kids won't serve.
They didn't in Nam and they won't in Iraq. There will be some kind of loophole they can slide through.

2. If they re institute the draft, the rich kids won't go anyway.
Just look at AWOL Dumbya. The same thing will happen all over again.

3. "Apparentl;y" and note that I'm using that word loosely, they changed
the rules after the fiasco that was Vietnam so now you cant get out of it by going to college or because you are married.ut I'm sure that they will find a way. But it will be fun to watch them squirm for a few.

5. They changed those rules during the
Vietnam fiasco. Rich kids still slithered out of it.

18. The Fundy White-wing chickenhawks will still have a backdoor loophole
College students can receive postponements until the end of the term, or of the year for seniors. Ministry students are exempt if in accepted divinity schools.

"Accepted" divinity school? Expect all those fundy bible schools to suddenly, and quietly become "accepted" and/or accredited. Bank on it.

4. NO WAY!!!!!
If you think the Pukes would not find a way around the draft you
are kidding yourself. If you can guaranty they would have to serve like everyone else then fine. But history says they would weasel out.

6. If they re institute the draft....
.... things would change a lot in my opinion.

#1 With a draft we may actually have enough troops to secure Iraq. It would still take sometime, and would still cost a lot in lives, but I believe it could be done.

#2 If there were a draft the lives of many more people would be involved. I think there are many people that just go on with their lives and could care less about whats going on in Iraq. It would be sort of a wake up call for the people sleeping, while Bush destroys their country.

#3 If there were a draft maybe we would be more prepared for a real war. The recent war games with Russia and China is no small matter. If China invades Taiwan now what could the US do? Or maybe we shouldn't get involved. (You know the old saying look out for number one first.)

#4 If there were a draft what kind of message would that send to China, Russia and the rest of the world? China and other countries may read it as an even more aggressive USA, which could send us on a trip of disaster.

If the Draft would have been started right after 9/11, I think most people would have supported it. I know I would have then. And if we would have had a draft at that time we may not be in the mess we are in now.

I would have supported it right after 9/11, but I'm not so sure now. I have mixed feelings about it.

22. I will not support it as long as College Republicans aren't enlisting
that's for sure. I'm not going to fight their asshole leader's lie of a war just so they can sit here like cowards and talk about how patriotic they are.

8. OK
If on your IRS return your family of 4 made over half a million a year, then your kids go. Since it was your tax bracket that received the most from the Bush tax cut. It's the least you can do for your country.

10. Yes only if the Bush kids get to go first and
all the kids of the parents that vote for Bush. Then they can stop the draft.

11. Yes...
Draft everyone who voted for Bush since they agree with his policy. Or draft everyone who still has those ridiculous W04 and Bush/Cheney Farm and Ranch team stickers.

14. I would say yes
but my sons are 20 and 14. I don't want them to go and they don't want to go. They pretty much know what is going on and don't believe the invasion was justified. That being said, if you want the war and the subsequent war plans to stop, the draft is the only thing that will do it barring politicians who are against the war getting elected.

15. absolutely not !!
Edited on Fri Aug-19-05 11:31 PM by welshTerrier2
look, your goal of "shared responsibility" is a good one ... there's no reason that the poor should carry a disproportionate share of the burden ... and one might even argue fewer wars would be fought if the rich and powerful had to put their own children's butts on the line ... but the draft? nooooooo ...

first, there is no guarantee that, regardless of how you want the draft to function, it will lead to equality across socio-economic strata ... it seems nothing, absolutely nothing, ever has succeeded in doing that ...

and second, to conscript anyone to fight a war that they know is waged only to boost profits for trans-national corporations is unconscionable ... the draft would force innocent Americans to lay down their lives at the command of their corporate masters ... their only alternatives would be prison or flight ...

i really hope you rethink this ... your objectives are good but your methods are not ... we should never give the state, especially a state strangled by corporate empire, the power over life and death in the service of an unprincipled pursuit of profits ...

fight for peace and democracy; not for a lessening of civil liberties ... say no to the draft ...

Bush's agenda to invade other nations is too broad and the military we have now is spread way too thin. They WILL install the draft. Just wait. I predict within the next year.
