Has Tet started?
My wife was watching the local news... NBC in Seattle... and heard a story about attacks on the Green Zone and 20 coordinated car/suicide bombs. Nuthin' on any other news source.

Did she have too much wine before dinner?

Anybody?

5. I hope we don't lose too many of our soldiers there.
There is not a single thing in the shithole that is Iraq that was worth even ONE.

12. No, not he "felt that" but rather INTELLIGENCE pointed to an
upcoming Tet-like offensive in the offing.

2. Almost certainly the story she heard was a prediction
that an insurgent offensive will take place in a week's time. See the thread at: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1714722

Quoting from that thread:

WASHINGTON - U.S. and foreign intelligence officials tell NBC News they have credible intelligence that insurgents in Iraq have active plans to launch a massive offensive early next week — timed to coincide with the possible draft of an Iraqi constitution on Monday.

According to the officials, terrorists would launch as many as 20 simultaneous suicide bombings, mostly in Baghdad. The plans also include heavy rocket and mortar attacks against U.S. and Iraqi government offices inside Baghdad’s Green Zone, against the U.S. military at Baghdad International Airport, and at Abu Ghraib prison.

U.S. officials say the offensive was planned for early this week but was put on hold when Iraqis failed to come up with a draft constitution

4. whats next?
I've been worried about something like that for too long now... a mass attack could have terrible consequences. I think it would be an awful shock.

9. If I were a parent, I would kill myself right now. God bless the soldiers,
their families and the innocents caught in the blasts. God help the rest of us.

11. Here's one difference I think.
Tet was a real military offensive by the army of a vigorous state - North Vietnam. As to be expected, such an offensive attacked direct enemies, the Armed Forces of the U.S. and South Vietnam.

This so called "offensive" is reported to be "20 car bombs." Likely few if any American soldiers will be killed. Maybe more Iraqi police and military. But the main victims will be innocent Iraqi civilians.

In such a situation, average Iraqis can't won't and don't "support" the insurgency.

Quite the optimist, I'd say.

Here's a tip for ya: One day does not a Tet Offensive make.

15. Insurgents or Patriots? Or Rebels? All things are relative.
It's just hard to see it through the bushspeak.

17. Actually the Tet Offensive coincided with the lunar new year.
I think any Iraqi offensive will more likely be timed to coincide with Ramadan.:scared:
