Dogs Used On Antiwar Protesters In Pittsburgh
I don't have a link, it was posted as a news item from AP on my service providers home page. Apparently 3 were arrested, a tasor used on one protester and a police dog on another. Fucking outrage!

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Pittsburgh police arrested three people yesterday morning during an anti-war protest outside an Army recruiting station in Oakland.

Police Sgt. Clint Winkler said he ordered officers to move in on the protestors after one of the marchers grabbed a TV camera and damaged it and protesters then attacked an officer who tried to intervene.

As police dispersed the group, they used a Taser and pepper spray on one woman and charged her with disorderly conduct, failure to disperse and resisting arrest, Winkler said. Another woman, Carol Wiedmann, 68, of Sewickley, was taken to Presbyterian University Hospital after being bitten in the thigh by a police dog, and was to be charged with disorderly conduct and failure to disperse. A teenager also was cited and released.

Tom Boney, a visitor from Graham, N.C., who was helping enroll a child at Carnegie Mellon University, said he could not see any provocation by protestors, but said police did use the police dog to force the protesters to move. Boney also said he did not see Wiedmann do anything to provoke the dog into biting her.

9. You don't have to do anything for one of those dogs to bite.....
they attack on command, friend or foe.
This, along with several other related stories about protesters being harassed and attacked, should be sufficient evidence to convince anyone that fascism has stopped it's creeping stage and has learned how to walk, if not run. It's here folks, that police state we've been warning everyone about? It's here.

yesterday with Rick Santorum, PA and this whole nation is looking more and more frightening.I predicted a major roll-back in civil liberties way back after the election of 2000 and many close friends said I was being unnecessarily alarmist...here we go folks.

During the rally at the station, a Fox News cameraman who was aggressively filming demonstrators' faces was told to leave and started a minor confrontation with protestors. He returned with police officers, claiming that either he was punched or that his camera was broken (although he continued to use his camera the rest of the day). Witnesses confirm that neither of these things happened.

8. First Santorum determines Barnes and Noble's store policies
now FU(X) News determines law enforcement procedure? Who the hell do these pukes think they are?

Do they really think Americans will stand still for this?

Oh, a few will be intimidated and cower in their homes.

But as I've said before, we are the descendants of patriots, not sheep. This will not stand for long. If law enforcement officers want to maliciously abuse their powers for political purposes rather than to protect and defend their fellow citizens, my prediction is that this will not end up well for law enforcement. History bears this out.

My condolences to the protesters who were treated this way. And curses on the Fascist cops and FU(X) News and Santorum.

Actually, this was a situation in one store, but the message needs to be forcefully brought home to the entire chain and to all similar businesses:

If you can't protect our rights in your establishments, we will have to live in fear every time we enter them, and we would just as soon take our business to the little guy or gal.

Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 08:42 AM by mcscajun
...first of all, they are a blue company.

Second, if you read the story, this is more about Santorum's people and the shady business of using Delaware State Troopers as private security guards, and one such Trooper overstepping his authority and his role.

excerpt from the story:

Aviola says it is not uncommon for Delaware state troopers, in their official capacity, to work for private contractors, who later reimburse the state.

(snip)

When I contacted the Wilmington Barnes & Noble store and asked for a manager, someone named Pam came on the phone, said “No Comment,” wouldn’t give her last name, and hung up.

At Barnes & Noble’s headquarters, Mary Ellen Keating, senior vice president for corporate communications and public affairs, gave this account.

“I spoke to the assistant manager, and what she told me was that the store management was not consulted on how the situation was managed,” she says. “A state policeman, without consulting management, removed these students from the store.”

===============
It's certainly worth writing to your local B&N and copying the Corporate HQ with your concerns, but boycott is a big leap for a company that's generally on our side.

to dispense order with as little force as possible. What went wrong here? Were their emotions clouding their judgment? To taser a 68 year old is unwarranted. Hopefully this incident will not discourage future protesters.

7. Can also be a problem to protest in front of an army base.....
Because if you don't have a permit, that will really rile some officials up. The Army base or recruiting station is where people go to sign up for duty, for the army regardless of where they get sent.

True, it is sending people to their deaths but to be that bold and protest in front of the Army stations can send things into chaos.

Much better idea to protest out in public, and do big marches, vigils etc away from the Army bases imo.

11. It wasn't a base.
The article states it was in front of a recruiting station. These tend to be in public areas. The Constitution provides that people have the right to protest in front of a recruiting station.

The article also makes clear that the confrontation involved a Fox camera man, not people stopping the military from functioning.

It's good to focus attention on what the problem is. Using a dog on a 68 year old lady is ugly. And that is equally true if the dog has four legs and a tail, or if it has two legs and a Fox camera.

13. Here's the protester's side of the story...

Today in Pittsburgh, 100 people showed up in response to a call to shut down military recruitment in Pittsburgh. For the second time in a month, Pittsburgh Organizing Group (POG) was able to successfully shut down the main recruitment station in Pittsburgh. This marked the sixth time in recent months that recruitment in Pittsburgh was disrupted by anti-war activists. Prior to the start of the march, word was received that the station wouldn?t be opening for the day due to the protests.

At 10:45am people began to march towards the Oakland Recruiting Station in order to celebrate this victory, ensure there was no chance of the station reopening that day, and to focus attention on the continuing demand for its closure. The march took over Forbes Avenue opposing traffic and met only limited police interference. Upon arrival, the march moved completely onto the sidewalk and blocked the doors to the center. Speakers from POG talked about the need to confront recruitment and the ongoing war in Iraq. More information on the overall campaign can be found at http://www.organizepittsburgh.org

As the speech finished, someone taped a cardboard sign to the stations door reading ?No Lies Told Today, Recruitment Center Has Been Shut Down.? At this point, a cameraman from Fox News shoved his camera into the face of a protester who was standing by the sign. When that individual asked that it be pointed somewhere else (instead of his face) the cameraman became aggressive. An altercation ensued at which point he started screaming to the cops to arrest people for assaulting his camera. Police from the City Of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh promptly began to attack the crowd on the sidewalk. The first person arrested (and according to the police, the person Fox is pressing charges against) was hit and pepper sprayed, during which time a cop held a taser two inches from his face. After that, a women in the crowd was grabbed, hit, pepper sprayed in the face while on the ground, and then tasered, all while three large cops stood around her. She is currently in the hospital and we are unsure of her condition. A male protester was also arrested, pepper-sprayed and tasered. An overwhelming police presence started ordering people to disperse from the sidewalk, and a police dog began pursuing people. Cops hit and shoved people, while the dog lunged forward and bit a 68-year-old grandmother who was walking away with her back to the dog. The police also let the dog bite a videographer, who narrowly avoided injury as the dog only got his pants. Further outrages occurred as the police grabbed a 17 year-old girl off the sidewalk and slammed her to the ground. Her crime? She questioned the legality of their earlier actions. Pepper spray also hit a group of children and the police knocked over a man in a wheelchair.

While a total of six people were arrested, many other people were successfully un-arrested by activists who pulled them away. All of those arrested are facing multiple charges; exact charges and bails are unknown as of this time. There is an urgent need for bail money and legal costs, along with solidarity calls and emails. Here is how you can help:

What brought it on? The Fox News cameraman. Obviously Fox News is openly fascist, but what in the world were they doing trying to destroy his camera?

That's breaking the law too just as much as the cops got out of line. Trying to destroy public property, even video cameras is illegal. That said, this was way out of line and needed to be handled differently.

20. From the same link: "fox news" clarification
by a witness Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005 at 11:50 PM

For clarification -- the camerman in question was wearing a "fox news" shirt, but was not directly working for him. Other TV crews identified him as a freelancer for Fox. His camera was not a pro camera like the other crews (DVCAM), but was a consumer-grade miniDV camera.

He also was aggressive and hostile towards the protestors from the beginning. I think it is likely that he wanted to provoke protestors so that he could give the cops an excuse to react violently.

The recruitment station was shut down, so the protest was anticipated. Looks to me like a case of planned provocation prior to a police show of force.

These tactics were used in the anti-war movements of the 60's & 70's. Send in provocateurs to start situations so that the police could attack and disburse the crowd.

60. Dynasty_At_Passes, who are you trusting that anybody broke anybody's
camera? You've got to vet sources of information. I have enough experience on items like this to know that, when it comes to antiwar protesters (i.e., the Vietnam war protests, or the huge marches against BOTH Persian Gulf War I and II--or any protest that seriously threatens the powers-that-be with new thinking--such as the Seattle '99 anti-WTO protest), even reputable news organizations will willfully contribute to dis-information, and lie through their teeth, to discredit protests. I've seen it happen time and again (first-hand experience).

Truly, you must DISTRUST every word on such protests from corporate news monopoly sources. Generally, the most reliable sources are the eyewitness protesters themselves, who were merely seeking to exercise their right of free speech. NOBODY except a paid provocateur goes to a protest to GET HURT. NOBODY! And when somebody does get hurt, it's almost always (99.99% of the time) the result of, a) a police/political conspiracy to hurt large numbers of people, destroy their protest and shut them up; or b) deliberate provocation of an incident, by a paid police or other operative, which results in harm to completely innocent protesters and bystanders, and to private or public property--with both kinds of repression having the goal of frightening and silencing people, and turning the general population against the protesters' cause.

In Seattle, 50,000 people peacefully shut down the World Trade Organization meeting (for its anti-democratic rules), with not an single incident, until the police squadrons in Darth Vader costumes laid into crowds of peaceful, sitting protesters (sitting down in street intersections) with batons, rubber bullets and pepper spray hoses. After this had gone on all day long, a few upset youngsters (if that's who they were) broke some windows and burned trash cans downtown, and guess who got featured on CNN?

50,000 peaceful protesters! Teachers, labor unions, postal workers, steelworkers, religious groups, human rights and environmental groups, parents, kids, lawyers, nurses--a cross section of the U.S.A. And who and what gets featured on CNN and on the cover of Time?

The Darth Vader squad even manhandled and pepper sprayed a City councilmen! And who and what gets featured on CNN and on the cover of Time and even in some so-called lib journals?

Beware of your sources of information!

The one good thing that happened as a result is that there was hell to pay from the citizens of Seattle, who could see with their own eyes what happened. There were extensive city hearings (not covered by the corporate news monopolies); all charges against the protesters (thousands arrested and further abused in custody) were dropped, and the police chief and the mayor were toast.

Let's hope the good citizens of Pittsburgh get on their police and political authorities for using dogs on a 68 year old woman, and tasering innocent people!

And I hope that that 68 year old woman and the others who were hurt clean the city out with a lawsuit (sometimes the only way to get law and order). What a total outrage!

25. Here is a suggestion to future protesters...
If you want news media camera's out of your face just extend the longest finger of your hand and point it skyward. Apparently footage of this gesture cannot be used on television and such a gesture may prompt the cameraman to look for a different view.

As a side note. In ancient times that gesture was said to be used to avert the evil eye. I think it very apropos to use it in this fashion against today's evil eye - propaganda news media.

At a war protest in KC earlier this year, a Protest Warrior moron showed up with a similar camera and his tactics were identical - very confrontational, and he shoved his camera directly into many of our faces. He was absolutely looking to create an incident.

This is a tactic we should prepare counter-tactics for.

Then if protestors get abused, you have the evidence by which to file major lawsuits against any city that uses its police force to abuse its own citizens, not to mention people like that cameraman who instigated it all.

Do they only have film of the protestors being attacked or do they have evidence that the attack was not provoked; ie, film of the protest prior to the attack? That was my question. If this is to be taken to court there needs to be more evidence than the attack itself.

64. I went there and to the small protest in front of the jail...
both happen to be on the bike ride I normally take on weekends - small world.

I'm writing up a post for later, but:

1.) I didn't see any media at the "press conference." (more like an informal meeting at the local Quaker meeting house.)

2.) they had no idea FR and LGF were advocating disrupting their protests. (see my posts below)

3.) when the police came, they appeared as if from no where 50+ strong.

4.) POG is setting up a legal defense fund for those arrested. Donate at http://www.thomasmertoncenter.org/.

24. We should send this on to congress.
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 08:58 AM by Hubert Flottz
I expected it to happen.

Edit... Senator Warner, Rummy and Rush are the reason!

Setting dogs on the POWs in Iraq was played down as a "Frat Prank" by the GOP. Now it's okay here too. Your civil rights have become QUAINT!

EDIT # 2 We need two more votes to get this seen by as many people as we can! * "THIS AGGRESSION SHOULD NOT STAND!"

jail solidarity is currently occurring downtown at the County Jail- 930 2nd Ave (where the arrested are being held). Everyone is welcome to attend. We will be there until our friends are released.

37. Sounds like the cops
are too aggressive. Maybe they should enlist to fight in a war where people shoot back, instead of using tasers on 68 year old grandmothers, and knocking over wheelchairs. Pepperspraying people already under control is bad, too.

A 17 year old girl dared to ask a question, and she was slammed to the ground. We are supposed to have the right to assemble peaceably, but like so many other rights guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, this only applies when the government decides it will.

The first amendment was supposed to guarantee that the government could not do what it is doing now. We know now that the democracy Chimp claims to wish to spread in the Middle East is a lie. He has no conception of what a democracy should be. He said himself that he would prefer a dictatorship, with him as dictator. That one statement was probably one of the only thing he's ever said that wasn't a lie.

40. You can report a crime here.
IMO, this qualifies. The woman in the video was obviously restrained (for what, I don't know), and was tased while on the ground. Shameful abuse of authority. If it's not a crime, it should be.

46. When they attack one hundred of us...
... there should be a thousand to take their place. And when they attack a thousand, there should be ten thousand.

If this administration and it cohorts believe that we can be stopped by one show of force, then we are defeated and it is indeed too late for us all.

55. This is my town, and here's my letter
Comments before I sent it? I'm a little pissed.

Chief Robert W McNeilly Jr.
Pittsburgh Bureau of Police
1203 Western Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15233

Chief McNeilly,

I urge you to investigate the actions of the police officers involved in the August 20 anti-war protest in Oakland, near the Pitt campus.
I have just watched a video of one of your officers, “Tasing” a young woman who was obviously already detained. I read also that another woman (68 years old) was bitten by a police dog during the same protest.
You can see the video of the abuse here:

http://pittsburgh.indymedia.org/news/2005/08/19803.php

I understand the need for your officers to act in the public interest, and crowd control is part of that obligation. What is of most concern to me, however, is the First Amendment right of these people to peaceful protest and the protection of laws regarding personal safety, civil rights and restricting the use of excessive force. What did this young woman do to deserve having her rights violated? She was on the ground, detained and surrounded by your officers. How do you justify this obvious abuse of authority by an officer whose duty it is to protect and serve? Have we begun to cross the line between a free society and a police state?

My own daughter was in Oakland yesterday. It could easily have been her in that video, and that angers and frightens me. It should be an embarrassment to you that a parent’s worst fear when her child visits a college campus is not the dangers typically associated with college life, but the actions of police officers whose duty it is to protect them from those dangers.

This incident is a shameful reflection on your officers, an affront to the Constitutional rights of the protesters, and needs to be addressed. I believe it is your job to do that.

Sincerely,

Cc:

56. Investigation is needed alright...And who was that cameraman?
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 11:44 AM by Junkdrawer
What's odd here is the protesters stopped traffic on Saturday afternoon on a major artery and nothing until the camera incident. Then they taser a young woman who was already face down on the ground.

I'm sorry, but it looks to me like the police were waiting for an incident they were tipped off to before they acted. And then they couldn't wait until they tasered someone, anyone.

See post #20 above. The cameraman wasn't a professional cameraman - just a guy with a videocamera and a "Fox News" tshirt. So I went to freeperville and found these....

Well, since we know their protest route, I guess pelting them with tomatoes and eggs will be all the easier?

just thought freepers would like to know what the enemy is up to. (And remember -- the left supports the troops!)
Their site was down yesterday, but looks to be up at the moment. I've saved a screen shot of this page just in case.

I live less than an hour and a half from there and it just so happens that I have nothing else going on (surprisingly) this Saturday. It also just so happens that I have two large dogs. It doesn't "just so happen" that large dogs eat alot and therefore, ahem, excuse me, deficate alot, but that is what happens. But it does just so happen that I have right here a quite sizeable stack of brown paper lunch sacks. I'll be scooping and saving all week. While it may be true that Molotov cocktails would hurt alot more, I think my dungbombs will be much more satisfyingly humiliating.
The only thing I'm worried about now is telling my wife that I'm not going to be free on another Saturday after all.

They are meeting in Oakland, home to CERT, CMU and U of Pitt, MANY hospitals. It is moonbat central (actually, the entire East End, except for some "ethnic" neighborhoods - full of Catholics/blue collar workers). I live in Squirrell Hill, which is the wealthier part of town, which is a mix of professors, Jews - 50%, Russians, and assorted other immigrants. I emailed the police about this, since the last time they did this (earlier this year), the police didn't know about it beforehand, IIRC.
