Bush Apologist Denies Social Rights For Women In Iraq |
|
I was watching Meet The Press and an apologist for the Bush administration commenting on the lack of securing social rights for women in the proposed Iraqi constitution said" that women's social rights are not vital to the evolution of democracy." He also said he would be content if Iraqi democracy resembled American democracy at the turn of the eighteenth century...
Wasn't it Bush who always yelped that you could judge a society by the way it treats its women; that their emancipation goes hand and hand with social progress...

1. I think that apologist needs to learn what democracy is... |
|
..because a society that denies rights to women isn't any sort of democracy...

2. "women's social rights are not vital to the evolution of democracy." |
|
When HALF of a population is denied "social rights" (read basic human rights) IT IS A FAILURE OF DEMOCRACY.

16. Yeah. He's always yelping about freedom and democracy too. |
|
With the same amount of sincerity that he talks about "compassionate conservatism".

8. I saw that...almost fell out of my chair |

Wasn't one of the selling points of the war the fact that Iraqi women didn't have equal rights under Sadam? Didn't Laura remind the Murikan public of that on quite a few occasions? He said that Murika in 1900 was a democracy even tho women didn't have the right to vote, and that most people would be thrilled if Iraq had a democracy akin to that of ours in 1900. Hmmm. Assuming that half of Iraq's population is female, I wonder if half of the Iraqi population would be thrilled.
Whoever that guy was...I hate him.

|
right after that idiot's remark? David had to end the program right at that point, but I could tell he was dying to have the guy "expand" on that statement.

12. Women Had Equal Rights In Iraq... |
|
They were equally repressed by Saddam but Iraqi women were the most emancipated women in the Arab world with the possible exception of Egypt...
Men and women had equal rights but they weren't much rights at all....

Why isn't this issue eliciting more attention (outrage would be better) here on the DU ... the fact that the MSM barely concerns itself with the issue is sadly not surprising (albeit disgusting that the MSM would ignore basic human rights violations of 1/2 of a population!)
Have I missed the outrage on the DU? All I've seen are a handful of posts with 5-15 responses (mostly the same posters trying to keep the subject alive) ... please tell me I'm wrong....

18. Your not wrong but with all the outrages adding up, sometimes |
|
others get drowned out, what you can do is make sure these latest outrages get the attention they need....
There is so much to discuss and deal with that at times it can get overwhelming for some, doesn't make them less involved, it just means we need more hands....

10. So American boys and girls |
|
are dying and being maimed to drag Iraq into the 17th century?
Is anyone going to say the obvious, that it was already as far as the 20th under Saddam?
