12. I watched parts, but am taping it too. Sure looks to me like watching! |

The words at the very end were something like, it's up to the President how much power Negroponte has, and some of his imformation will fly in the face of the Sec of Defense and Sec of State. He'll have to make a decision.
I'm quite surprised at CNN with this program. I'm going to concentrate on the whole thing later when I play the tape.

guileless and Tenet too responsible, but the end was actually the weakest part, IMO. Who do you think Negroponte will decide for? Only for the neocons; isn't he a PNAC member? And based on his past with the Iran/Contra affair...I tried to tape it and it didn't take for some reason. Hopefully I'll catch it on a re-run. (But I'm afraid this might be the last time its aired!)

see CNN yet; I'm basing my thoughts on what others said. But it reminds me, in a way, of the evening when at the end of the CBS news, Walter C. told the American people what was really happening in Vietnam. Surely that alone didn't "end" the war. But it marked a turning point, where politicians began to dare to break from the policy of death.

seen most of those interviews, which only covered snips of what these folks indeed had to say. Carl Ford, Jr. Assistant Secretary of State. Col. John E. McLaughlin, Former Acting CIA Director. Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, a longtime Powell adviser. Larry Johnson former CIA & David Kay. John Negroponte, the "Death Squad Master".
The voice over in MHO slanted toward junior and worked against the intelligence community.
Of course they never talked about John Bolton or the Plame leak. They certainly left out a whole lot of stuff. Like the DSM memos and the Joe Wilson's trip to Niger and his letter to the NY Times.
This was old stuff designed to take a little heat off junior and put it on George Tenet. should have been the name of this mickey mouse documentary.

speaking to what the folks back home were saying about Iraq - and aside from Lott, diehard that he is, they all pretty much said the people back home were upset.
Who do you support? Your own re-election or a President hell-bent on an unpopular war?
Iraq is a theocracy now (by law)...an Islamic theocracy at that. Bush's "base" isn't going to take to that too well....and those GOP Senators know it....not to mention that once people question the war-they start to question the "whys" and "hows"...and they look to blame.

I don't think it distracts attention from Cindy's camp in Texas. While it isn't a full embrace of the peace movement, it surely is a large step away from the Bush/Cheney position.
The idea of preparation for the 2006 elections is key. It is not as if the republicans in the House and Senate have suddenly become moral. They are prostitutes, and they will go whoring after whatever the riches and comfort that go with their office.

have US oil companies own the Iraqi oil wells. If the US doesn't get control of them, we could be in for some real interesting times. Does anyone think we'd get a drop of oil from them once we leave after shooting hundreds of thousands of them and contaminating their country with DU for all eternity?

is the plan. I agree with you fully on that. However, there is a new strain of nationalism sweeping across large sections of Iraq, and it is being fed by Iran. In this set of circumstances, which were not expected by the fools in this administration, it is becoming very unlikely that Halliburton & friends will control the oil resources for long. This type of nationalism does not view what is occuring as the working of the mighty American eagle, which was strong enough to prey on other nations at will a generation ago; rather, this is viewed as the Cheney-type of vulture capitalism that will be resisted.

of it. Maybe their plans would be to get out next year and get through the elections, invade Iran and just kind of take a step to the left while there and retake Iraq. But they have to take Iran in the spring. If oil prices are in Euros and all those economists are right about the dollar sinking to 0 against the Euro, * only choices are face 90% of a very upset American public with no economy or keep these invasions up for as long as they can.

it was a mistake when it was happening?
My guess is they're getting ahead of what's coming out of the Plame investigation AND may be ready to turn their support to Dems in hope of getting favorable treatment for their media merger agenda if Dems end up in power.
We have to watch our incumbent Dems carefully. Those who supported the war and feared calling Bush out are very likely to give the news media anything they want in exchange for a few scraps of media coverage.
Don't forget, it was DLC pressure and fast talking that pushed Clinton to make the mistake of relaxing media ownership restrictions and not pursuing re-establishment of the Fairness Doctrine.

Perhaps, they are accepting the combination of pressures coming down on the administration: traitorgate, the spy scandal, the DSM "fixing intelligence around policy". Plus, the war is spiralling out of control and, I am certain they know of PNAC and anticipate the neoCONs willingness to exacerbate a situation which already endangers our own national security.

18. If the military pulls out - how do you keep an ambassador and PNAC |
|
and Halliburton telling the Iraqis what to do? If your sisters and brothers and cousins were beat up by our young (if what is reported is true) and if you were tormented/tortured in a prison - and if you rotted in a jail waiting for a lawyer or taken to a tropical island to be kept in chicken coop conditions - who would you want to get the oil?
They blew it and we didn't even get a voice because our Dem leaders overwhelmingly gave it to them.
Thanks to our heroes who said no.
Why should we support Hagel or Clinton or Bayh or Biden or anyone else who is visiting New Hampshire and Iowa?

44. I respectfully disagree |
|
Granted, CNN could have gone into more detail about PNAC and this administration's plans to invade Iraq long before they even came to power. However, the report was quite explicit about the OTHER intelligence agencies such as the NSA, the State Dept intel and even intel from the energy department who vigorously disagreed with the OSP and Curve Ball and the unmentioned Chalabi. They also made it clear that Bush didn't call for an NIE before deciding to go to war, it was Congress who eventually did. What is most telling, and CNN included this in their piece, the NIE didn't find Iraq to be an imminent threat.
I'm reaching into cobwebs now insofar as the NIE is concerned. If I remember correctly, Bushco was manipulating the timing of the NIE and sent only a portion of it to the Senate Intel Cmte. for their perusal. Levin and another senator, can't remember who, protested over it being only a partial report and Bushco, with the help of Tenet, stonewalled the final report which included the other various agencies who found Iraq to be a non-threat. This happened only days before the vote for the Iraq Resolution giving Bush power to go to war.
So all of that leads you to a good question...who chaired the Senate Intel Cmte and allowed the resolution to be passed, knowing what the final report of the NIE said?

Fairly reasonable objection. I'll not challenge it, but agree to respectfully disagree. Going further is sort of kicking a dead horse since the thread is largely done with and the remaining criteria involved are largely subjective.
It's a very good point you've brought up, though, and it would take considerable debate to attempt to rebut it. In fact, it's enlightening to see this observation, as I had overlooked it in my review of the show.
Thanks, excellent response.
