OMG....You must see these comments on "womens rights" from the WH

How the White House Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Islamic Law

“The advance of women’s rights and the advance of liberty are ultimately inseparable.”
– President Bush, 3/14/04

“President Bush has made the advance of women’s human rights a global policy priority. … We all have an obligation to speak for women who are denied their rights to learn, to vote or to live in freedom.”
– First Lady Laura Bush, 3/8/05

“The commitment of this administration to women’s rights in Iraq is unshakable.”
– Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, 3/9/04

“There can be no compromise on the principle that Iraqis can each have an equal role in the building of their country’s future without regard to their ethnic or religious background or gender.”
– U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Zalmay Khalilzad, 8/8/05

VERSUS

According to Kurdish and Sunni negotiators, the US ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, proposed that Islam be named “a primary source” and supported a wording which would give clerics authority in civil matters such as divorce, marriage and inheritance.

If approved, critics say that the proposals would erode women’s rights and other freedoms enshrined under existing laws. … Dozens of women gathered in central Baghdad yesterday to protest against what the organiser, Yanar Mohammad, feared would be a “fascist, nationalist and Islamist” constitution. “We are fighting to avoid becoming second class citizens,” she said.

7. maybe they are a little busy fighting...
*the Roberts nomination
*continuing attacks on abortion rights at the local, state and national level
*for equal pay for equal work, and no discrimination in promotions and hiring
*to get their prescriptions for birth control filled by right wing anti choice pharmacists
*to get morning after pill/emergency contraception actually available to the women who need it, when they need it
*to preserve social security
*to get congress to renew VAWA

are you on their email alert lists? I hear from "women's groups" all the time

25. Same reason we don't hear anything about....
DSM, Grand Jury, etc. The MSM doesn't report it.

Larry Johnson was on Ed Schultz today and said that CNN called him in to review the final cut of 'Dead Wrong.' They wanted to make sure that all 'i's'' were dotted and 't's' were crossed. He asked them why all the fuss? They are totally intimidated by this administration....he said he had never seen anything like it. They wanted to make sure they weren't going to be 'Rathered.'

Not all of them, I know, but the fight women still have to wage in this day and age in America is a long road to hoe.

3. In fairness, one should point out that...
Pushing for Islam to be "a primary source" of Iraqi law was actually taking the more womens-rights-friendly side. The other side of that argument was that Islam should be "THE primary source" of Iraqi law.

12. "women's social rights are not critical to the evolution of democracy."
Reuel M. Gerecht on Meet the Press 8/21/05:

"If Iraqis could develop a democracy that resembled America in the 1900s, I think we'd all be thrilled. I mean, women's social rights are not critical to the evolution of democracy. We hope they're there. I think they will be there. But I think we need to put this into perspective."

law

check the link inside the link.

It's helpful to remember we are critiquing the president and his "men" and not the Iraqi's struggling to come to grips with this American "man" made problem. Blaming Islam is not the route we would want to take, even if its a only a subtheme of the critique.

14. it points to the "unknowns and lack of planning" of their invasion
Isalmic laws were the last things that neocons shared as a

consequence of the invasion...many here on DU brought up the

potential for "civil war" to occur...looks like DU'ers were right.

shrubbie is a puppet...not a leader.

the above quotes are more "doublespeak" while actions speak much louder.

"I mean, women's social rights are not critical to the evolution of democracy. We hope they're there. I think they will be there. But I think we need to put this into perspective."

28. ",,,we need to put this into prospective..."
What prospective would this son of a bitch like it put into? Just imagine the hysteria that would ensue were the word "men" put in place of "women" in this statement. Oh, the humanity.....
