Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I don't think "the tide is turning."
I keep hearing and reading people saying the tide is turning, but I've been hearing that for the last 3 years. I think it's wishful thinking, but as long as the sheeple of America have their MSM and sitcoms, the tide is staying where it is. As long as Americans have their comforts, Bush has power.

1. Don't know what planet your on But...
Americans are losing their comforts right & left. Starting with gas, cost of living not going up, people still losing jobs, more deaths in Iraq.

Comforts are becoming a luxury.

8. Yeah, and look what happens when we are close to an election
Non stop multi zillion dollar ads convince people that if they don't vote republican that gays will marry their sons, bibles will be confiscated, churches will all be closed down by the government and Osama bin Laden will be welcomed into Washington as a hero by the democratic president.

And people will vote republican.

That is what causes pessimism.

(that and the fact that we have shit for leadership in the democratic party, and they are basically a wholly owned subsidiary of the republican junta)

sorry to ruin your day.

:hi:

22. That's right. The war finally came home to the rest of Americans.
If you didn't lose anyone in the WTC, you had moved on with your life within 6 months; if you didn't have a loved one fighting in Iraq, the war was never a war of great sacrifice; but now, everyone who drives is being hit. Imagine that. All the bloodshed we've lost so far, and it took a rise of .50 per gallon of gasoline to knock all those right-wingers off their know-it-all pedastals.

30. Well let's see, after 9/11 Bush was at 90% approval
now he is topping out at 43% most polls have him at 41%.

59% of America now thinks that Bush is full of shit, compared to the 10% after 9/11.

So yeah, I feel pretty comfortable saying that the tide is turning.

2. I dunno. His poll #'s have been in the mid to low 40% and today
a new poll shows his approval #'s at 36%. Even CNN was just talking about that today. If those #'s stay that low, I think it's pretty safe to say the tide has begun to turn.

9. But just because Smirk's popularity is in the toilet (again)
That doesn't mean that it's a lock that we'll win back the Congress next year, or win back the White House 2008, or get out of Iraq, or get something done about global warming, or get the infrastructure patched back up, or get an independent, intelligent media, or any number of things.

We should have won 2002, we should have won 2004. We didn't. We didn't win because our candidates and platforms were not different enough from the GOP, because our party leadership was more concerned with who ran the party than who ran the country, because the media was still a national embarrassment, and because the other side was better organized and better funded.

Smirk is not the only problem. And the continual focus on Smirk - - rather than the entire GOP - - is going to come back and bite us in the donkey in 2006 and 2008. Because we'll be running weak Dems who still boast they voted for the worst of Smirk's agenda against folks like Hagel and McCain, who have already rebranded themselves as "a different kind of Republican".

By 2006 and 2008 it will be way too late to recast our message from "Smirk is the problem" to "the Republicans are the problem". So there is every reason to be cautious, and continue fighting like we were still at 9/12/02 as far as public opinion is concerned.

10. But your tomato sure looks happy!
I tend to agree with you, though. The problem is it takes a long time for the tide to turnover this amount of rot. The Vietnam war took how long to end? How many protests? How long? Yep..it's just started unless something miraculous happens.

Thank GOD for high gas prices, huh? Would ten dollars a gallon be enough to throw the bums out..and get the hell out of the middle east and find a way to make a new energy? Of course..oh let's really be pessimistic..they always need to come up with a new enemy to keep the good old military industrial complex fed. Remember the Soviet Union? Oh those were the days..or were they? We just need to bring back the cold war. It beats the real thing.

25. Well, the tide HAS been turning, very slowly, for a while now.
Since Bush peaked at 9-11, his ratings have been sinking slowly. Things have gone from bad to worse, and he's losing support accordingly.

Granted, he "won" the election, but aside from that... I'd say as soon as a clear majority of people turned against him, the tide officially was on our side.

All we need is an honest election to throw the bastids out.

(that, incidentally, is where I'm pessimistic)

26. I'm qualified to say that you are Wrong! ;-)
The Tide didn't beging to turn until Cindy Sheehan's March to Crawford. And now we're hearing reports from all over "Red State" speaking out against the war.

That's very very significant. and the polling numbers are showing him tanking so fast - so quickly - it's astonishing really.

but then, since i am the queen of pessimists when it comes to this administration - i expect another 9/11 event will be manufactured very soon - to try and reverse the current statistics.

I'm sure Rove and Cheney's office is busy plotting away for another bogey man event right now in fact.

I just hope the american public won't be stupid enough to buy into it again.

34. Some people here spend too much time in the blue state world
And when that happens you start assuming that everybody thinks the way you do, and that littlest unfavorable news story for the White House is the beginning of the end of the Bush presidency.

Having said that, this presidency is not in the best of shape right now.

37. But we're "sacrificing"! Shrubbie said so!
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 05:30 PM by BiggJawn
In his radio bullshit session Saturday, Chimpy compared the sacrifices of the WWII generation to the "sacrifices" of Gen 911...

Give me a fucking break! In WWII, you had food rationing, gasoline rationing, SHOE rationing and all other types of shortages.

Scrap drives, conservation campaigns, everything geared to "Make sure the boys have enough Over There before you take a second helping"

what kind of "sacrifices" do the Murkan Sheeple make today?

Oh, fuck, I dunno....Maybe settle for an H-2 instead of that International CXT, maybe buy only ONE Playstation for each of the kids instead of 3 each...

What will it take to "turn the tide"?
When Mr and Mrs. Dittohead McSheeple plop down to eat their Boston Market take-out and watch "Must See Teeeee-Veeeee" some evening, and it ain't there.

Only Then.
