Why All This Fuss Over Cindy??
Do you find something slightly odd about it?? There have been mothers (and fathers)of fallen soldiers marching/complaining about Bush in the past (i.e., the woman in Moore's documentary, for example). There have been war protesters from the get-to and our media ignored them or tried to make it seem like just 10 lunatics showed up to march, etc. Now we have Cindy and the group.

Actually there are a small number of people there in Crawford compared to some really big protests. So what's all the hullabaloo about??? Here's a couple reasons that come to mind: a) by Georgie going on vacation he left a dead news month and the media want to get some action stirred up like maybe (if they get real lucky) people from the opposing sides killing each other; b) the dismal ratings of Bush finally gave these whores 'permission' to report opposition (like today's poll of only 36% approval rating---and, of course, all the 30-ish ratings for support of this war); or c) some fat bastards want us out of the Iraq rat hole because it's now gotten out of control with disturbing oil prices, etc. and is threatening to cut into their great, green greed machine. It's one of those, because this media sure as hell have snuffed and ignored much larger outbursts than Cindy's.

6. It's astonishing, but I think it has to do with
a change in the tone of, well, nearly everything.

* Iraq isn't going so well and everyone knows it.
* Bush's approval ratings are tanking.
* MAYBE the August recess (and no "news" to speak of) has the media more interested (I don't know about this, just tossing it out there as a possibility), etc.

7. a couple other things
1. She not only came at a time when George was on vacation and the press is there, but also after a very aggressive election the media is not as scared if getting Dan Rathered (acting like they are picking sides). The same thing goes with loyalty (Hagel)

2. The MSM follows polls just like candidates running for office. They say, oh anti-war is really hot right now, lets roll with it.

3. This war is soooooooooo bad beyond any more denial. People are more and more likely to know someone who is over there, is going over there or have lost their health or their life from being there. People always act more if it effects them.

8. Oh, to add a choice "d" to my post....forgot this one
Could it be that the American people so pissed at oil prices are just drooling for someone to hate and blame. You know how they love to hate and blame. The media senses that they can get viewers if they supply the new object to be hated/blame and it's the little half-wit cowboy himself!!!!

9. i think the success of Cindy is tied to the "vacation"
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 05:54 PM by SlavesandBulldozers
there is something in the contrast, in the collision, of a mother's nightmare and this man's vacation. it is a polarizing event in so many ways.

12. IMNSHO the turn came with the Social-Security-a-poolusas
Which made Smirk's Social Security plan less popular, rather than more, followed by the failure of the right to stand together over the Nuclear Option. The final nail came when Republicans (most notably Hagel) started calling for an exit strategy in Iraq.

Smirk has been failing in important areas since he announced his candidacy in 2000, but he has been "succeeding" in all the areas that matter to the beltway: spin control, raw power and money. Once Smirk started "losing" in these "important" areas - - the media turned on him, and are starting to cover him in the way that they have covered Dems in the past. During the Clinton/Gore admin, there were many small protests against them that got national press, even when the protesters did not represent an important minority. What mattered was the "conflict" in the story - - that somebody was causing political headaches to the President (or Vice President).

Some of the folks on the right who are covering Sheehan are covering her because they think she looks like a whack-a-doo. (To them, sit ins and anti-war protests are so 1960s.) IMNSHO, the rest of media are not covering Sheehan because of Sheehan, or because they think she is important story because the Iraq war needs to be discussed. They are covering Sheehan because they're obsessed with gossip and personal conflict. Bob Somerby calls it the novelization of the news, and he's right. They are covering Sheehan for the same reason because it's a good West Wing plot - - a gold star mother who used to be a Bush supporter turns against him because her son died in Iraq. Cut to commercial! What a hook!

The coverage of Sheehan may be positive in the short run, but it just goes to show that the media is still in need of major reform.
