Truthout: Sheila Jackson Lee and Joan Baez visit Camp Casey Mon-Tue

Camp Casey had a surprise guest tonight. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee gave a powerful speech from the stage. She announced that she is having a town meeting in Houston in on Thursday. I spoke with her after the speech and she ended by saying she would see me in Washington on September 24th. I asked her if she was in support of immediate withdrawal from Iraq and her response was "Absolutely, it was wrong to go in and it is wrong to stay".

Another surprise was that the Congresswoman introduced Joan Baez who is still in Crawford, and will still be here tomorrow night. There were over 100 people at Camp Casey II tonight and about 40 at Camp Casey I. I did not stop at the Peace House but there are usually a couple dozen people there at all times... at about 6pm the there were about 10 people at the pro-war vigil and no one at their camp...

Ann Wright announced tonight that Caravans will be leaving Camp Casey in different directions August 31st heading to Washington stopping all over the country to organize for the March on Washington on September 24th.

1. Cindy Sheehan at the 9/24 march? This could be awkward...
A.N.S.W.E.R. is one of the organizers of the march, and some of their friends from the International Socialist Organization got expelled from Camp Casey on Saturday for what organizers claim was private fundraising activity.

2. I think two groups plan protests

Ironic that the socialists got ousted for trying to be capitalists at Camp Casey.

:)

3. They were there on Sunday. They were probably asked to quit selling
their newspaper.

I talked to some of them. Good people, but it wasn't cool to be collecting money for their organization there, even if it was to help defray printing costs..

ANSWER and UFP&J -- the two largest anti-war groups -- have agreed to join forces at the march and rally. I don't see any problem. ANSWER has a more diverse message but you can march under whichever banner you like.

Statement about a joint rally and joint march for September 24

The two major antiwar coalitions that have initiated and organized for a massive anti-war March on Washington for September 24 have agreed to organize a joint rally followed by a joint march. Both coalitions will organize under their own banners, slogans, and with their own literature for the September 24 demonstration. The joint rally will begin at 11:30 am at the Ellipse in the front of the White House. We urge everyone around the country to unite and come out for the largest possible anti-war demonstration on September 24.

Signed by:

United for Peace and Justice

A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition
(on behalf of the September 24 National Coalition)

7. Good for Sheila Jackson Lee..
She knew from the very beginning that this was a cold calculated move by the bushwa that had nothing to do with 9/11 and everything to do with OIL in the Middle East and Strategic Planning.

8. I wonder if Joan Baez is planning on being in Wash Sept. 24th.
I can't imagine her not going, but I read that she's on tour; still I'll bet she's there. Joan is the original peace sign. She really got good tv coverage this week also, and held on own every time. Some bimbette on MSNBC was trying to rattle Joan and Joan just wasn't biting - good spokeswoman for peace, always.
